  • Farmer Carville Mace is working hard at Foxleigh Farm to bring in the last of the watermelon harvest. With a quick recap of how they planted their fields with this iconic summer fruit, we see just how much the melons have grown. Carville explains the important skill of knowing when a watermelon is ripe, which he can sense just by tapping the fruit and listening to them. As the day goes on, Carville, his family, and their farmhands, pick wagon loads of melons, which are then washed and sold at stores and their family farm stand.

More often than not you'll want to wait until a stem is brown as opposed to green before you harvest a melon for optimal ripeness but these guys have to make sure their produce stays fresher longer than a backyard gardener so I can see where he's coming from.

When you're working outside in heat there's nothing better than frozen watermelon. If you catch it right when it's cold through and not completely frozen it's perfect. I ate like 80 watermelon last summer doing pools!!!

I raise a small watermelon and cantaloupe patch here in southern MD, the biggest pain in the neck is keeping the grass out!

They're throwing the ones that are overripe back into the field, where I assume they get eaten by wildlife. They didn't throw any away for being too big, they just sorted them by size because they know different customers want different sizes.
