- Medan is a city of around 2 million people, the largest city on the island of Sumatra. With a population of approximately 10% Chinese, I am looking forward to finding the best example of Chinese-Indonesian food that we can!!
With the help of my mom... I think its a mission success!!
At 'Soup Today,' we have a meal that both reminds me of my last home-cooked meal in China (at Li's home obviously), as well as food that introduces some incredible flavors that (I think) are ONLY possible in the town of Medan! With this unique blend of Chinese culture existing in one of the world's most abundant natural areas, the setting is just perfect for flavor creations of epic proportions.
For a meal that you can only have here, and a meal that my family and I enjoyed massively! I have a huge thank you to say to the staff and kitchen team at Soup Today - this is a fabulous meal, and a superb price to go with it. Keep up the great work!

Medan gave us such a great welcome, I always felt very well received everywhere in Indonesia actually. Thank you for greeting me, thank you for the reminder that we need to come back.
Hello again Max!
@@JoelsTastyRide if you back to medan you must try kari bihun tabona and nasi padang pondok gurih, this food is famous in medan north sumatera
@@JoelsTastyRide 😍🙏
True Joel your cups should have a bike on it, definitely a sign that your mom chose the right restaurant. I love garlic and ginger in soups, that one looked tasty, fish meat and yam that is a healthy soup, I want the shrimps. Normally I know they roast the egg plant but that deep fried looked yummy, the fish sauce hmmm. HA HA Damn right Lee...leave some for me! Thank you Lee for your camera skills.
Quality comment right here :-) I’m laughing, and also you are making ME hungry!!! Payback is considered fair game :-) ha ha ha. Thank you so much for writing Abigail, really :-) enjoyed it a lot today.
Hi, Joel and Li! Happy 2024 to you---Happy Spring Festival!

Great seeing your parents with you dinner. Love ya!!!!💕💕💕
The best! Hi Deneen!!!! Good morning 🤩🥳
Hat's off to your mom for selecting a good restaurant. It all looked delicious. Thank you for posting this video.
Thanks for watching! T Huff big up!!! Thanks so much, (and yeah my mom deserved the shout-out, haha this place is great!)
Waw amazing food warung medan masakan nya sangat luar biasa
This place really was good :-) thanks for taking the time to write, I hope things are going well for you today
Great Joel, Le and mom dad will be able to try delicious Indo Chinese food in Medan. Make my mouth watery. You guys should explore other food from part of different islands, but still many in Sumatra island. Glad you might go back to Indonesia sooner. I miss all the Indonesian food.
Next time! I already cannot wait to come back, thank you for reminding me :-) and just thank you for a wonderful message today. Thanks for greeting everyone, I hope you are doing very well so far this February.
As someone from Borneo, I wanted to argue that the best Chinese Indonesian dishes come from the province of West Kalimantan. But then I remembered that some of my favorite stuff like stir-fried _kwetiau_ (flat rice noodles) and curry _bihun_ (rice vermicelli) come from North Sumatra, so I decided to stay quiet 😁
I do still want to claim that our _nasi campur_ (rice with assorted pork, like ข้าวหมูแดง _khao moo daeng_ in Thailand) and _kwecap_ (similar to ก๋วยจั๊บ _guay jub_ in Thailand) that we have here are better than theirs 😂
11:53 And yes, that should be curry leaf with the eggplant dish.
14:40 interesting that you likened it to apricot! 😁 Traditionally, the sauce should have tamarind paste, torchginger, Vietnamese coriander, lime, etc. It does share a few ingredients with _arsik_ so I understand where your wife was coming from. “Nyonya” refers to the descendants of Chinese traders who’ve married local ladies many centuries ago, so there’s always going to be fusion of Chinese and local flavors when it’s concerned as traditionally it was the local ladies who cooked up local ingredients while at the same time catered to their husbands’ palate.
Thank you again for visiting Medan and North Sumatra, Indonesia! 🙏
The stuff you give is always worth just copying and pasting into the video description :-) Kilan, I love reading your comments. Thank you so much for taking all the time you did to type this out. Many more people than myself can learn, but I am here learning for sure.
I will definitely agree with you on the curry and rice, Nasi Campur is possibly the WORLDS best “rice with sides” food ♥️
However, Thailand (specifically North and Northwest) has totally unbeatable dishes with KanomJeen, some of the tastiest noodles on planet Earth.
@@JoelsTastyRide ah, I know a lot of people like _khanom jeen_ but I’m not a fan 😣 I am more into _khao soi_ if we’re talking about Northern Thailand. Maybe because that kind of fermented rice noodles that they use in _khanom jeen_ is similar to the one we use for a dessert here in Indonesia, so I have that mental block that I just can’t get over when having the noodles with fish curry. 😞
@@JoelsTastyRide I’m guessing you’re thinking of Malaysian _nasi campur_ which is rice with side dishes. I’m talking about _nasi campur_ in Indonesia where it’s rice with porky sides like หมูแดง _moo daeng_ and หมูกรอบ _moo grob_ and, in the case of West Kalimantan, chicken and egg 😁
Your family is so awesome and of course so are you. I feel like if I see a video where you find something new, like a new ingredient, I have to say something. Great video. You guys both look amazing! I literally don’t know anyone in English CZcams that has the knowledge and experience you do about this cuisine. Amazing.
Do you know, grapes does the same thing about noticing the quality of the rice. It’s something that usually blows past me, but she sees it every time. In fact, she remembers and goes back to places that use better quality rice. It’s amazing the nuance, I’m still working on it myself. :)
Blessings
I hear you man, wow, thank you for the second story as well :). AND, a big Hello to Grapes too please!
Man. A Killer cool comment. Amazing support, really Robert man, thank you.
Yes! Soup for You! ...Today!
Menu and foods are indeed colorful.
Haha, do I detect a Seinfeld reference!!!?? I hadn't watched that show myself, but thanks to my dad (and sister) quoting it, I think I know what you're talking about
Good Morning Joel & Li, nice to be able to see your latest content so early in the broadcast. I hope Li gets her fill of Noods! God Bless & Peace be with you!
Hiya Ron, I hope you and the family are well. Jesus Christ 🙏 , what a wonderful name 😍
Riiiiiight ON!!:)
Ron, I am always happy to see these conversations. Max, thank you for greeting everyone, Ron thank you for always thinking of Li’s noodle intake. 🤩🤩🤩🤘🏼😆😆😆 while there are plenty of great noodle dishes, the flavors are not quite sour enough or spicy enough… So for some reasons like this, she is happy to be home.
@@maxf3253 Dearest Max - I'm off tomorrow to fly from Florida to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to see my Wife & #2 Daughter - haven't been there since last August so I am really looking forward to the trip. The sauce on the pomfret got no orange juice! 😂
Just shallots lemongrass red chillies little bit of kaffir lime leaves n little garlic n a small piece of belacan n tamarind juice. And the special herb is torch flower.
Hi Lim!! Awesome comment :) Yes I can imagine there's no orange juice, haha. But it does look and taste, even smell like oranges (I am familiar with a few Chinese recipes using "JuZi," another citrus, and a few Indonesian recipes that use Jeruk? Is that right?). I love this dish... especially with the torch ginger addition!
😮❤ Dudes!!!! OMG! Well done mum for finding that one 😜 that looked out of the ball park! What a find! Happy days ❤xx love to you all! JP x

Medan has d most no of Indonesian Chinese.a big community there mostly excelling in business related.alot of Chinese eateries too Glad u managed to try their dishes . definitely different from d authentic Chinese dishes .probably blended with some Indonesian flavours
Soup Today is definitely one of the better Chinese food restaurants in Medan, quite affordable too because Chinese Indonesian owned restaurants in Indonesia have a reputation of being pricey 😅I used to rate 31 pare house as the best Chinese food restaurant in Medan but the last time I went there the taste of the dishes I ordered had significant downgrade unfortunately, still tasty though and also on the more affordable side because while the prices were quite high the portion of the dishes were also big.
A bit strange to drink coffee just before you go to dinner, we drink coffee after a dinner :-) We also really like Indonesian food. Thai food is also very tasty but different.
Have a good day
Hey Patrick man, happy Saturday to you!! Well, about the coffee yes youre right, I also (try to) never drink coffee after about 1pm, maybe 2pm latest. This meal happened right after church, we found a church in Medan and we went here after... so it was right about noon while we were having coffee.
Hey! So you are familiar with Indonesian food? Do you have a place near you, or have you been to Indonesia before?
@@JoelsTastyRideGood morning Joel,
Yes we have been a few times to Bali and we will be there again in November.
I did see some advertisements. Yes, you’re right, that must be a cool occasion to visit. I miss Lake Toba very much already, thank you for reminding me to come back as soon as possible. 🤘🏼👊🏼👌🏼
Now looking at the close up shot of the fish it looks like pumpkin paste, either way delicious
Chinese Indonesian food? Say no more .. Bring it 🤤😉

And yes, it was a great moment. I’m still processing it a little honestly
Tbh, tauco is a kind of fermented soy bean paste that highly influenced by Chinese cuisine. It has similar fermented flavor like miso but slightly different. Miso is being fermented until those beans becomes paste like consistency while tauco stopped when those soy beans becomes mushy then some ppl smash it into a kind of pasty soy sauce looking paste. Hopefully, I give a correct information bc it's almost lost cuisine in my hometown.
Good information
@@maxf3253 np Max. As long as it helps I'm happy enough to assist you.😁
Well thank you also Gideon :)
Thanks for sharing! This exact style of tofu is very popular in Southern China (where my wife is from), and so we love this dish...
@@JoelsTastyRide I can guess that bc most Chinese descendants that exist in Indonesia today actually came from South East part of China if you track our ancestry roots. Idk how will the demographic becomes in several upcoming years bc there are lots of immigrants last several years.
Nyonya..Chinese straits borned..many generations in this region of Indonesia Malaysia n Singapore.
Hi again Lim, yes I have been lucky to visit Malaka in Malaysia, SO cool to now visit on the opposite side Sumatra (and I will be back again to Sumatra for sure!)
Arsik is Batak food so I doubt the pomfret is anything like it. But it is also available in Medan.
