Love it. The classic Rolex vs Omega. Both brands make some damn fine watches truth be told. Granted, as your brother seems to have learned. When buying from either brand, get a decently rated water resistant one.

I have watched this story several times, loved it on your adventure channel.

More valuable as it came from a time when Rolex was not just a pointless fashion ornament. Was a tool watch that had a purpose. Had integrity. Meant something worthwhile. Not the case now.

I bought an explorer 40 which is way more than a months salary for me and I’m not really into buying a lot of watches or collecting anymore, so it’s my one daily watch and it has evoked many of the same feelings you mentioned in this episode.

If I could walk into the Rolex AD and get a Rolex Submariner at retail I would leave my house right now. Wish it was that easy these days.

That was a good price in 1981. I bought my Submariner new in the US in October of 1985 for USD$860 and I felt very lucky.

I bought a Tudor Black Bay 58 about a year ago because it's the closest thing to a Submariner you can just walk into a store and buy these days. Someday I will pony up the ridiculous gray market price for a Submariner.

I spent $10K on a Rolex submariner earlier this year. Easily 1 months salary for me. Maybe more.

I love the brand, but I can’t go to the AD and buy one new same day.

Quartz watches keep amazing time whether they be Rolex or Timex. Automatics are the way to go though.

I agree with your comment on automatics.I have a Seiko automatic with a bevelled crystal my wife bought me back in 1977.
It is my favourite watch but stopped working 20 years ago. This video has inspired me to take it to a jeweller to see if it can be repaired.I miss the simplicity
and quality of a watch like that.

it's a shame rolex replaced the faded bezel with a new one. the old faded ones are worth a bit of money.

Wear a nato strap for twin pin redundancy.

3:35 are we talking gross or net pay? (just curious because that detail is important)
