Amazing review as always! The fact that Tolkien's books are reprinted in new editions almost every year proves how much of a legend he is. I always found that his books have a certain nostalgic pattern, but somehow it's pleasant. Especially when he describes the beauty of Lórien, it feels like he was an Istari who saw all these things in real life, and his works are actually accounts of what he saw. Thank you for the love you put in your reviews!

I read your introduction and just started the poem. This is fun! And J.T. McDaniel's voice adds a layer I will enjoy listening too after I've read it myself. I will probably read a chapter and then listen to it...
I was wondering if your interest also spreads to the Poetic Edda. If so, the dual language version of Edward Pettit that came out last year is a real treasure.
And to go treasure hunting for all things English I strongly recommend Alasdair Gray's The Book of Prefaces.

Hello! Great video! I have just found your channel and I'm having great fun enjoying your reviews! The only thing I would correct is the pronunciation of the first vowel sound in Maldon, which I believe is /ɒ/ as in "copy". Keep up with the good work!

Hi, James! Do you know if Harper Collins plans to do the same type of print (standard hardback edition) for Sir Gawain and The Green Knight and Beowulf? I can only find the deluxe edition for The Green Knight.
I don’t believe it’s planned to be, but that would be a great idea! Beowulf exists as a standard hardback edition but in the case of Sir Gawain, it was released in paperback format back in the mid-2000s if I’m not mistaken. Then they released simultaneously the deluxe and a new paperback edition timed with the release of the film. But a matching standard hardback would look great alongside Maldon, Arthur and Aotrou 😃

I hesitate to buy the deluxe edition. The book looks great and the cd is a nice addition, but the quality of the later deluxe editions was sometimes disappointing. Is everything alright with this one?
I understand your concerns. All seems fine with this deluxe (at least the copy I have). The paper admittedly those feels inferior to previous deluxe editions but infinitely better than the History of the Hobbit deluxe pages.
It is not. The paper is just low-quality trade edition paper. It is marginally better than the paper in the recent HotH deluxe, but only marginally.
How is the paper quality of the deluxe edition? As good as the older ones or is it less good? It looks a bit more yellow, and I have got the feeling that the quality of paper has gone down of late. I'm not sure if this is true though.

Admittedly, paper quality (at least for the deluxe edition) feels inferior to previous deluxe editions. It’s definitely better than the recent History of the Hobbit deluxe release, but it has that slight yellow tinge and thinness to it. Though it’s marketed as acid-free and all that.
The paper on the standard hardback edition, ironically, feels much more superior (and maintains the same texture and thickness of the previous standard editions).
That is a shame indeed! They are way to expensive to lower the quality. I hope that they make good on that. I really want this book, but not with lesser paper...
It is pretty much identical to the trade - not good quality at all. The acid-free tag is just marketing. Almost all paper is acid free these days.
I'm surprised you didn't mention that the paper in the deluxe is exactly the same (well, actually slightly worse) than the trade edition. Seems like an odd thing to omit in the review. Both trade and deluxe are acid-free (nothing isn't these days).

I guess I haven't read this yet. So, it's something I could see myself buying. I do understand the worry of turning re-publishing Tolkien material in different collections into a cottage industry though. Then again, no one is forcing anyone to buy it.
I didn’t know about this book, being a Tolkien book collector myself for many years. So no, his praises are not all in vain. Let people enjoy things.
