    We are here with our good man Mike and his 2008 Toyota Highlander four-wheel drive 3.5 l automatic doing a transmission fluid change with the filter and fluid. The transmission pan holds 3.7 quarts in the pan and the total fill is 9.5 quarts.
    We drain and fill the transmission 3 times in order to change the majority of the fluid out.
    Special thanks to Hamlet the official racer on the channel for doing most of the work.

    Excellent video, I just did this service on a 2009 Lexus RX, same procedure. The car shifted fine but at low speed and cold there was a noticeable shift delay, the car also had a bit of a thump into reverse again when cold. I had added some thicker shift stabilizer (Lubeguard stop shutter/shake) and it got a bit better. When I did the service I used the original Toyota WS fluid, just under 4qts drained out. Added back in through the dipstick, too bad the later models have a sealed fill plug. I left the filter in, previous owner had changed it about 50k miles ago.
    The car is noticeably smoother shifting when cold, there is almost no remaining shift lag at low speed and cruising on the highway is smoother as well. The car also shifts into reverse effortlessly. I didn't add lubegaurd to the new fluid, suspect the small amount remaining in the old fluid will be more than enough with the clean ATF.
    Edit: Before the ATF change when shifting was just OK the trans was also a bit overfilled by the previous owner, that usually causes vibration in these toyota units.

      Just depends on the type of transmission some you can change half the fluid or more when you drop the pan and others you only change about a third of it you'll notice most of the Hondas the initial fill in the total fill is about 1/3 and that's why it's good to do a couple drain and fills just depending on what the fluid looks like.

    I swear Eben clear drain pan has been around the block with more then 1 car 🤣. Even though it is proper to do 3 drain and fill when changing the atf fluid. I suggest 3 times but once every time with the oil change for 3 times and it gives the fluid a chance to cycle with the old Fluid and get flush out when drain.

    Hi Eben..
    Would you recommend doing a transmission flush with the amsoil flush product before changing the ATF??
    Also do I have to replace the transmission filter with every change?

    • @Syntheticoilprotection
      @Syntheticoilprotection  Před 2 lety +1

      I personally do not use the transmission flush on transmissions you can't get all the old fluid out.
      I do recommend changing the transmission filter and cleaning the magnets.
      If you have the machine to get all the old fluid out I would do a flush It just takes a ton of fluid and or you need to have someone help you with the return line and doing the flush it takes about three people to do it properly if you do it without the machine and that's why I usually just show on the channel doing a pandrop.

    So is it ok to mix atf ws with amsoil? Even if u drain it three times, you will still have old tranny oil in there. If you are a math expert you can use solutions formula to compute how much old tranny oil that is left in there after draining it three times. What do you think?

    • @Syntheticoilprotection

      Correct it will be mixed and yes you can mix it and you'll see a huge Improvement in shifting even if you mix only one third Amsoil into the old fluid the shifting will be night and day.

      its about 3/4ths new fluid now. i drained black fluid from it and refilled it, drove it around and went through all 5 gears, and then drained pinkish black fluid again and refilled it, and now its smooth (but probably still black)

    It's really hard to read the fluid level on this automatic transmission dip stick. Toyota should have roughed up the surface between the low and high notches. You need to lay it across a paper towel and look at the wet spot it leaves to measure the level. I've way overfilled this transmission before because you simply cannot see the fluid on the dipstick, even when it's full.

    I have a problem, I would like to do the same but my mechanic doesn't want to change the ATF in my car because it's 15 years old and 102k miles... Although even if I just wanted some drain & fills maybe he understood I would like to flush it, what could indeed be bad for a transmission, and he's a GM specialist so he may have a bad experience doing it because their transmissions aren't very reliable... But it bugs me to keep my ancient ATF indefinitely and I'm pretty sure it would be good to change it.

    • @Syntheticoilprotection
      @Syntheticoilprotection  Před 3 lety +5

      I would still do a pan drop and change the filter and do half the fluid to start you'll notice it'll shift a lot better.
      If you leave it it'll definitely wreck the transmission eventually.

    • @Syntheticoilprotection

    I just noticed in this video the fuel efficient atf is compatible with Honda dw1 fluid, which is what my 1996 accord calls for. However, I put the regular amsoil oe atf in, which is a bit thicker. Is this going to be a problem? When I looked it up on amsoils website they recommended both, so I went with the regular thinking that it will be a little better on an older transmission.

    • @Syntheticoilprotection
      @Syntheticoilprotection  Před 3 lety

      There's two different viscosities you'll see Brett One is called the multi-vehicle signature series ATF which is the old school viscosity then most older cars take like my 59 Cadillac DeVille takes that in the transmission and in the power steering and then you're going to see the updated specification which is called the fuel efficient signature series ATF and that goes in most of the new 8-speed automatics new Honda transmissions 10-speed BMW transmissions a lot of the newer transmissions take that viscosity and it gets a little bit better gas mileage it just depends on your vehicle I would just double check it here with the lookup guide and you'll know what's supposed to go in your car.

I did use the LV for about the last 50k miles. It might have gotten a bit better gas mileage. I noticed that when cold, it shifted a bit too firm with the LV. Once warm, completely smooth.

I’ve seen videos that say not to change it if you’ve gone more than 100k. Do you recommend changing it? Also do you change the filter every time you drain and fill, or just drain fluid? Would it be better to change the filter on the last drain and fill so there is mostly new fluid in there and you are not running the older fluid you can’t drain through a new filter? Thanks for the videos!

      @hansenriquerach-mendoza3515 the after pool at 21:40 is normal shifting for a Toyota automatic transmission that's the way they shift with a delay that is for a smooth shift the computer can be programmed and you can have a very tight close shift almost like a dual clutch transmission if it's programmed in that is on like the Corvette transmission stuff like that however on a four-wheel drive it has a softer shift that is normal💯

      None of those Transmissions shift like a dual clutch transmission if you're looking for something that just snaps shifts you want to look at one of the videos with a DCT clutch it's called a dual clutch transmission there's specifically built for track purpose under load and in between load they shift at almost the same exact speed that's what's on the f8 tributo Ferrari that is one of the best mid-engine cars in the world and the shifting is like a video game I drove a 458 Italia still to this day it's the best production car I've ever driven completely blew my mind I never thought that was possible.
      However there is tuning you can do to get a standard transmission to shift better like on the Allison diesel Transmissions they are known for being a very good transmission but they will never shift like a dual clutch transmission☕️

      I don't remember usually I think those pans hold about four and a half quarts then you're going to have a little bit of wasted fluid so that would be about 7 so I would call it five and a half and if you do a double drain and fill that would be 11:00 so I would do a case of oil if you want to do a double which is 12 quarts that's what I would personally do down the road you can always come back and do another round of drain and fill and change the filter in 15,000 miles if you really want to clean everything up it just depends on how particular you are with the vehicle what type of driving you're doing City Driving Towing and highway driving obviously the more City and towing you do you want to change everything exponentially sooner if you're doing all highway driving with very little shifting you can go a long time about 60,000 miles on a fluid change with the new filter and if you're doing a lot of City driving with Towing I highly recommend changing it every 15,000 miles or one year

    Tough to tell when oil level is full when you have to let the engine run. I wish the marks would have been set for cold and engine off.

      The most important thing is to do the final transmission level when the transmission is warm.
      If the transmission level where to be too high then you put the fluid in when it's very cold out you could just overfill the transmission but as long as you make sure when you do the final leveling that it's nice and warm you're good to go💯

    When I saw the second flush looking so bad I thought it was because of high mileage but yours has much less than mine. I have an 08 Highlander now with 241,000 miles and I drain and fill every 60,000 miles (5qt each time) and my fluid never looked like that. I always use Toyota Fluid because they have it specifically engineered for their transmissions. I think Amsoil is an amazing product but I wouldn't mix transmission fluids in my opinion.

      Of course that's what I used to think until I tried it truly amazing even if one quart you can actually feel the difference with the modifiers and it shifts faster smoother less vibration.
      If you ever want to try it this would give you the best value on the products👍

      @frankbiz 😃👍, if you want your transmission to shift smoother and faster than brand new definitely the way to go and your transmission will also last longer better film strength between the metals and oil manufacturer can call a full synthetic full synthetic when it's only 25% synthetic and soil is 100% it's different☕️
