    It’s a new year, which means it’s time for a fresh new start. And I want to kick off the year by making over our kitchen. And don’t get me wrong, this kitchen is beautiful, it’s the best kitchen I’ve ever had to be honest, but what would make it even better is if it just wasn’t so GRAY. We are renting, so I want to show you ways to make non-permanent changes to your kitchen like adding a wood slat wall panel, peel and stick backsplash tiles, contact paper wrapped cabinets, and new knobs!

      ...The bad thing about the " Real Backsplash " is ALL THE TEXTURE. I'm not sure why anyone would use that much of a Textured Splashback ,in a Kitchen, because it's not a good idea; you actually
      w a n t a smoother surface, to keep it clean... This Tile they used is NOT " Kitchen friendly. " so they must have bought it for really cheap. ...; That's the problem with some Companies ( owners of Rentals) and some Landlords.....They just want to do things " cheaply " instead of doing them " Properly" ....Because in the long run, a lot of it doesn't make sense...This backsplash does not make sense.,it is MUCH TOO textured to be in a Kitchen. And the colour is horrible. It makes the Kitchen feel dark ,especially with the paint on the Cabinets.
      Yes, I have ' first hard experience " ,with picking Tile, cutting Tile, matching a pattern, etc. ,As well as choosing Paint Colours for a Clients Home.
      So she was desiring to have that " Smooth, Bright Surface " as opposed to the JUNK that was used for this Kitchen Application;
      I can say , whoever decided to use this HORRIBLE Tile probably figured/ said to themselves..." Oh, it will make the Kitchen look more 'High End : .." ... UHHHMM.
      NO, it does not.

    I love the green color on the bottom cabinets and I love the mini frames for the fridge. The brass knobs on the cabinets are definitely an improvement but I think you will still catch on the bottom ones. What I did on my kitchen is to put knobs on the top cabinets and handles on the bottom cabinets (the kind of handle that has no parts that are sticking out and can be caught on anything). The two different kinds of hardware are in the same style/color/material so they coordinate. I love it this way!

    I think the new slats look incredible! I think they look amazing w/the original cabinet color which actually look like they have a greenish hue on camera - looks like the slats were meant for that kitchen! Not a huge fan of the bright white backsplash or the bright green cabinets & brass knowbs (sorry!) I just think a more sagey green would flow a bit better & a bigger handle at least on the bottom cabinets - but I know renter friendly is often limited...&...you always make it come together Tina...so...can't wait to see part 2~~

  • @nicolet7735
    @nicolet7735 Před 5 měsíci +2

    I did the contract paper over tile in my last apartment and loved how it looked. It really just looked like tile. You just have to go really slow and be meticulous. It took me a while but it totally works and is definitely the cheapest option. It's easier to use the bottom as a guide and then use a blade to clean up the top.

    I actually like the original backsplash, I wouldn't change them but let's see what the tiles look like when you finally get them. Love the wall paper on the bottom cabinets and the island panels you placed by the stools. I especially love the gold knobs, it makes it look high end actually and the frames on the fridge are gorgeous, up my alley. Great job, can't wait to see the next video with everything else finished. I live in a 1950-60's era 1 bed apartment. The 4" square ⬜ pink tile at 40" from the floor,as well as the surround of the shower. Couldn't handle all that pink. Took white plastic peel n stick /contact paper around the interior of the shower. Still see tile shapes, vaguely the color but a whole lot more relaxing to my eyes. Great job so far on the makeover.🥶🖤🔔👍

    That panelling is amazing. I would love to see you paint some plants onto the odd tile on the splash backs, think it will really tie in with the green. I also think the light fitting looks nice but doesn't put out enough light and doesn't seem like your style. I'm with you on the grey, all these people rave over it on decorating pages but I find it so blah. You will put your flair on it Tina and make it lovely.

    Love the green contact paper on the cabinets. My cabinets are from the 80’s and are in bad shape. I can’t afford to have them painted. This contact paper might be an option for me. There is a groove cut into the doors. I don’t know how that will affect the contact paper. Your kitchen is looking great.

    You can command strip 16th inch plywood to the walls where the black splashes and mortar and tile right over it and just caulk around the edges. Or use tiny nails in the grout lines. that’s the best option and take it with you when you leave and fill in the blanks.

    WOW! WOW! WOW! The slat paneling just is VA-VA-VOOM! Amazes me how one little change can just elevate a room!
    Couldn't you have placed a tiny trim around at least at the top on the paper just underneath the cabinets to hide the unevenness? Painted white-ish it would have corrected the unevenness and blended into the contact paper.
    The teeny pic frames too cute and great idea! I should do that with my magnets so they more classy than just a magnet - more of a picture!
    Love the green!!

    I’m both a landlord and a renter. As a landlord, I would be very leery of allowing stick-on tiles and contact paper because I personally have not found either that actually come off cleanly. Using command hooks is good, however.
    As a renter, I swapped out the hardware (I brought one of my old pulls to the store to check width of holes). This quickly and inexpensively changed the look from painful (thin) dark brass to comfortable (thicker and rounded) brushed nickel. I also added color through hand towels, accessories, and a framed painting on one wall (it greets me whenever I walk into the kitchen).

    Happy New Year, Tina! Love the progress video, the changes you made look incredible so far! Such a dramatic difference on the island in a sort time, bravo. For a new tool idea, not sure if you've used a lathe before for wood turning. Maybe there is even a class near your town where you can try it out!

    A little museum wax goes a long way 😅 also if you’re using it on wood, make sure it is finished/painted wood because it can stain porous materials. Love the contact paper on the cabinets!!

    Your talent and projects are terrific. I am curious when you move how long it will take to re-boringize your apt.

    I was wondering if you could use the wood slats on the upper cabinets too, I feel there is a lot going on now in colours, styles and materials. Also, the grey backplash might look great when the cabinets have a different colour/style. The white peel and stick tiles give a very stark contrast.

    It's so funny to me that you haven't seen the wood slats done before. In the Netherlands they have been popular for years now, half the houses in my neighborhood has them somewhere in the house. Still love them though, I'm actually still looking for a place in my own home to put them 😛Just feels like USA is behind on interior design trends ;-)

    I love the panel on the front of the island. It really adds some texture and interest to that area. I'm wondering if the "tile" will melt in the heat behind the stove. Maybe you could leave that area alone and add a simple trim around the real tile that covers the transition to the white "tile" on either side.

    The island looks so nice with the paneling design. I also am a green lover so the lower cabinets look great! Can’t wait to see the finished project. 🫶

    Love the island! I think it's all going to turn out nice. And a tip regarding the knobs & pulls: keep them in the room where you took them out from (in your case kitchen). Otherwise you are running a risk of not remembering which storage box or location you put them in. Don't ask how I know this... 😔

    I’m not a renter but I change my mind so damn much that these tips work great for me. ❤

    The kitchen looks so good so far!
    I think the peel and stick would've worked great. I would have suggested making sure it's slightly larger than you need it and trim the excess from the top and bottom. Also, to use a blowdryer to help it set into the texture of the grout lines and tiles. Either way, using the blow dryer will help a ton with the upper cabinets. I find that it does great sealing the corners, too.

    The green contact paper looks great on those cupboards, it's too bad you can't do the top ones in something too. The brass knobs look so much better than the black but I'm going to tell you, I have that kind of knob and I get caught on them all the time. I would have gone for a C-shape or a cup pull on the bottom. Looking forward to seeing the whole makeover. Happy New Year!
