If we are being truthful to ourselves, just like the rich, taxes can be a big pain. Income tax, value added tax, property tax, etc. Paying taxes is good, but we could also create our own tax havens. I personally put my money mostly in the stock market, since its appreciation is not taxable, and then when I sell, I find ways to make the income non-deductible in taxes. I 'm currently sitting on more than $327k of cash, and I'm definitely throwing it in the market. Just thinking of how to not lose it all, since the market is red.
It upsets me how simple things like this are not taught in school, and then people complain about taxing the rich everyday, as though the rich should pay for their own ignorance. I have been doing the same thing myself, using the market to shield myself from the market. I have a 3 fund portfolio consisting of 33% S&P, 33% Total stock, and 33% international. I feel a need to focus on complete growth so I went 100% stocks, but does the SP500 and TSM overlap too much to make sense holding both? However I’ve been in the red for a month now. Only a few investors buy stocks at discount during bear markets. All other investors buy at a premium during roaring bull markets. as for stocks to buy I've loaded up my portfolio with numerous tech stocks, the likes of AMC are the least on my mind now.
Why pick random stocks if you are actually not willing to research them. Again avoid chasing big returns by investing in the latest hot picks.

The reason a lot of people use ETFs rather than mutual funds, is because you usually need a minimum lump sum to start buying into a mutual fund, and you have to make recurring payments into the fund. With an ETF you can jump right in, for next to nothing, and you can invest whenever you have money, not on a set schedule.

I was leaning towards more ETF's because of what you mentioned and less fees by a large margin, Dave does bring up some good points about mutual fund diversification. I wonder why he never mentioned EFT's.
My parents have always told me the goal in retirement is to reach a level where you have no debt, a lot of assets, and multiple streams of income.
It took me going into debt three times to learn to avoid this. I've had no debt for the past 3 years and it's amazing how much money I have been able to save and invest.
