  • With only one foam block to create a mold for my wing, I really need the CNC mill to work as planned. Also I show how I pull several Carbon Fiber parts off of one mold quickly.

As a video editor myself I know exactly how easy it is to turn the music down, and how difficult it is to raise the volume of Mike's voice when their is so much background noise. The nice thing about an iPhone is it has its own noise canceling and when combined with air pods or another bluetooth microphone his voice would be much clearer and easier for the video editor.

You singlehandedly restore my will to study (2nd year of college). I'm losing interest in mechanical engineering, because all we do is theroetical math, and the only practical thing is designing a simple transmission.. When I don't get to make the thing or even see the thing being made and used, I just lose the drive to design it. Your videos make me remeber what I went to college for. Thank you.

Greetings from Australia. Engineering is not an occupation but a passion. Have a look at CZcams website by Allen Millyard. He has built a number of motorcycle engines by adding cylinders to existing engine blocks. V12 Kawasaki out of two Kawasaki Z1300 engines for example, back into the original motorcycle frame. The best engineers are the ones who can walk the talk, like Mike Patey, not just have a piece of paper hanging on the wall. Finish your degree and love what you do.

Years ago I wanted to operate a lathe and a milling machine. I walked into the local technical college, introduced myself to the head of the machining department which taught accredited training courses and told him what I wanted to do, not interested in exams, just knowledge. He taught me himself at the night classes. I also did a TIG welding course at night school. There are ways to get around lame degree courses.

Mike, I watch your videos with my eight and ten year old daughters (my ten year old is a tinkerer and my copilot). Thank you for bringing the highest quality family safe content on CZcams. We just finished a Balsa swamp boat powered by one of my .45 nitro engines from my childhood. Our family of four fly our Beech Sierra all over the south (based at KEKY) and my kiddos just think general aviation is how everyone travels. It is funny to see the odd looks their friends give them when they talk about piloting our plane to the beach or the mountains. Just a normal day in our family. I remember a call from my daughter’s second grade teacher about the story she shared one Monday at show and tell. She shared that she flew to the lake, waterskied and ate lunch, packed up and flew to the farm and checked the game cameras, caught frogs and turtles, packed up again and flew to eat dinner at the beach. I had to explain to her teacher that was a normal Saturday for us
. Aviation is awesome and we are enjoying raising our daughters (future pilots) with aviation in our lives
. Best to you and your family! Richard Grimes

Hey Mike your videos are great and your enthusiasm for life is awesome, I know thousands and thousands of people are encouraged continually by your attitude and your love of life. Thank you for all you do through persistence, hard work, vision, and the joy you show. I would love to have one of those little draco's one day, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to justify to my wife to spend the money for one. I flew airplanes for a while in my early twenties but was diagnosed bipolar and was unable to continue towards the commercial license needed to pursue a career as a missionary aviation pilot. Being a carpenter I just decided to in my carpentry, which has now been about 30 years of investment. I have three children one- 15 year old daughter, one- one year old daughter, and a 5 year old son. My children bring me great joy and give me great purpose to love God and lead them in a life of adventure and love for people. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to win one of those draco's so that I can teach my son the joy of flying and he will no longer have to just hear me talk about my love for aviation and the old days when I actually got to fly pilot in command. I love you man, you bring great joy to many people and your attitude is literally what's helped keep me alive when I've dealt with bouts of deep depression. I praise God for you and your witness and the testimony of your Love for life and your search for better ways and continual ways to show love to your fellow man. Thanks again Mike and tell your wife thank you for me, for she has allowed you to become a great man and in doing that she's most likely sacrificed a lot, yet gained more than she could ever have imagined. Now get back to work! 😉

    Good Morning Mike,
I saw the carbon come off of the mold and had a thought:
If I recall correctly, golf ball dimples help reduce drag due to the formation of a small turbulent air barrier around the ball. (as demonstrated by the myth-busters)
What does the aviation industry think about keeping rough surfaces on wings? does that help reduce drag? hurt lift? not matter?
Anyways, keep up the good work!

I'm not a pilot, don't fly RC planes, I'm into motorcycles, but I love watching this man. Mike has smarts, a work ethic, and loves his family. I love the detail he gives on all projects. I plan to buy a Draco RC plane as soon as I can afford to put in my man cave. Keep being a real man, you're an inspiration to many.

When this series started I thought that scrappy was going to be a “novelty” airplane. Like....look at how I crammed this big engine into a cub....but it won’t be that great of a plane to actually fly around. I should have known better. I built a van’s RV-7 bone stock with all parts partially finished with complete instructions...and it took me 15 years start to finish. This guy’s talent, knowledge, and ability are inspirational.

Mike, I love your videos, so inspiring. As a ex gliding instructor I gave it all up to bring up a family and pay the mortgage. Your videos inspire me to go after my dream of flying again, however that looks unlikely in the short term. I am not jealous - honest. You obviously have the time, skill, space, money, motivation and a beautiful wife and home. I only have a couple of those points. All the best with Scrappy. Again your enthusiasm is infectious.

You're pushing me closer and closer to rebuilding my grandpa's old Cessna 170A. He ground looped it back in the 70's and its been sitting ever since. He repaired all of the damage, but never was able to find time to put it back together. He also has a Taylorcraft floating around that I might build a set of wings for. Maybe someday... With the real estate market in northern utah, I'll be lucky if i'm living here in 5 years.
