Am I the only one who has almost died seeing that lens left there with no cap on? 2:20
Not at all. I'm thinking - "you mean I've been so Compulsive about covering my lenses for no reason, hell just throw them around in the bag like Heaton." - that's the magic trick to great photographs.
I would not worry too much about it.
I always cover my lenses when I can. But sometimes there is no time or I have no hand to fuzz with that. So I drop them carefully in the bag and cover it. What would happen? Dust can easily be wiped / blown off before re-attaching it. When it's raining its a different story.
It's absolutely unreasonable how much I enjoy that type of videos. A bit of POV scouting like in the good old days of moto vlogging, a bit of faffing around with photography, the storytelling on the weather and decisions it makes for you, the glorious van life without fakeness, this is so epic.
I agree, and adding to that the wife conversation and "approval" to stay out overnight. :-) Great video as always Thomas
I agree - this is classic Heaton. There is no one better at these type of videos than Tom. It's the sense of adventure he captures that I love.
Love how you take the viewer for those journeys of yours. It's so relaxing to watch those videos :)
Because of COVID-19, our beaches, trails and parks in Nova Scotia are closed. You have NO idea how good the little lake ripples sound right now. Thank you!!!
Love that shot with the mainland on the tight man
God knows what the yanks think when a stranger knocks on your window and asks about Cockermouth!!!!
Don't ever apologize for a long video. All your videos are short. Longer equals better :)
Great images Thomas, especially loved the mood of the morning image. Hope the van issues have been resolved as Ive been there and feel your frustration
Natural light, with a natural reflector. Can't beat it!
Another great video Tom, loving the reflected light image 👌 Good to hear your writing a book to 👍
Your already great video stories just keep getting better. It’s a pleasure watching you work at your craft.
Great stuff Thomas! Always look forward to your work. It's so inspiring!
Thanks for the video Thomas, really enjoyed it, always great advice and leaves me with a better understanding of composition.
Another awesome video Thomas, amazing how the reflected light changes the image. An inspiration as always keep up the good work.
Nice images, I keep seeing things in your B roll behind you that Id love to photograph
Hello Thomas, I would like to thank you for the many great videos and this is also again! Through you, I have learned a lot and received suggestions. For me you are the best CZcams photographer. You do not care much about equipment and technology. In the sense of always having to have the latest. What you have, must work. On your excursions, you are always there live and learn a lot about compilations and the look for the important! Thanks for that Thomas
Love the composition.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has challenges following through consistently on my creative endeavors. Great video, as usual. Thanks Thomas.
Just hiking and finding such composition is so rewarding. Much more then planning. Good vlog Thomas. Thnx (also to sparecase)
My favorite picture was the one you didn't take. The pano you shot as b-roll of you walking in front of the lake that last foggy morning. I know you're looking to shoot tele, but that was a wonderful picture. And go spend time with your family. We love you, but not like they do.
Good to see your image came out well Thomas. Plenty more to explore there.
I like the reflected light image, especially with the subtle shading in the lake surface.
First, "The RAW Files". Now, "The LIGHT Files"... brilliant, love it.
Amazing first photo, but what a moment on the second! Just masterpiece! Wonderful locations! I just want get lost in it :)
Thank you so much Thomas. Great video as always. Good luck!
Who knew a "kitchen pass" was a universal thing. We should thank Charlotte and Monty for letting you out to enlighten us once more. Extra effort for the B-roll in this one. Now back to hoovering. Rock on!
I love to watch you, when photographing.
You got one buyer! I loved the calendar! I watched every video from the calendar and felt like I was part the story! Hope you get it published soon!
I had an interesting though about the the nice miss covered rock behind you just before you showed the first displayed photo. Good stuff man.
Whenever I see you driving on the wrong side of the road I'm scared to death. :)
but he is driving on the correct side :-) I feel the same way when I watch people driving in blogs in USA
I honestly just stepped on an imaginary break pedal on my carpet. 😂 Also, the craziest thing to experience is their round abouts!
What a life man that you enjoying 🔥♥️☺️
Really liked the POV and how you spend so much time on different camera angles just to make a amazing video . And of course how you explain the composition.
I always find something therapeutic about watching your videos.
Been wanting videos that show a lot more of your process on getting the shot (figuring out weather and location on a whim) more of these videos please!
So looking forward to the book!
Tom-your videography is stellar. Lovely image.
Great video, as always. ThanksTom.
Am I the only one whose heart skipped a beat when they heard the phrase "I am writing a book?"
the photo at 21:25 captures the moment. I can feel the cold morning and serenity.
I'm loving this type of video Thomas. Seems more personal... more intimate... ( "not that there is anything wrong with that" )
Always look forward to your vlogs. Don't usually comment because you get so many.
Light is everything :)
Beautiful reflected light shot Tom!!
nice vid that second image really popped nice.
Loved the video, good luck with the van!
Well worth staying overnight for the image in the morning , think that was my favorite image , great vlog as usual .
Enjoyed this video as usual and I see you have a new bit of kit. A Acratech leveling base I too have this and it's soo much easier to level the tripod. Keep up the good work.
Hi Thomas,
great video as always! Love watching your videos and how you work, as I always learn something new and get inspired to go out there and take some new shots. :)
Have you considered using the extenders for your telephoto lens, btw? I've got recently 1.4x for my Canon 70-200 F4 L and it was one of the best investments so far.
Extra range (some 80mm) for not so much extra weight in the bag and without degradation in the image quality, as for landscapes we are mostly using smaller apertures anyways.
good work sir, you inspire me
Great content, with 2 images of the same photo motive. The one with the reflected light was a real "Killer" but to be honest, I could live with the first one also :)
I like your tripod head. I know you said someplace what it is, but I can't find it. I'll keep looking. Great shot! I love the subtle blend of Fall colors.
I like the book idea. Reminds me of the Ansel Adams book 'Examples The Making of 40 Photographs'.
Seriously dude, I don't know what you've tapped into recently, but it's something awesome! I mean, two minutes into each video, and I've completely forgotten that I'm on CZcams. The balance of silence, talking, photography, walking, deadlines... These are the beats found in grand documentaries, yet they seem to come so naturally to you that you traversed a river to film a walking segment despite being late for an appointment :p
using photopills! love that!
Great video Thomas 👍
nice van!
this felt really nostalgic
Oopsie Daisy... :D Reminds me of Notting Hill
20:44 you gotta wonder how today it got easier with filters magnates. Real plug and play
Another good video. Nice to see the comparison :)
Very subtle but sure pop’s nice vid 👍🏻
Thank-you.
I hadn't used PhotoPills for quite a while. I didn't realise it did AR sun/moon predictions. Nice! Thanks. I also use Clear Outside, and it's definitely one of the more reliable apps - but as you demonstrated here, not always perfect.
Great video as always Thomas, was the second image using a polariser and the first not?
The video quality change is jarring from the GoPro to the beautiful Canon. Another nice video. I'm glad I could catch this while working from home. And I'm laughing at the British "engineering" in your van. That's too bad.
Thomas is now in a Seinfeld episode;
“” For sale, a Juicy Van.
Interesting trades considered “”
Have you tried the DarkSky App. Brilliant real-time coloured thermal imaging across the map of your area showing where the rain is and in what direction it’s moving. Great for helping to make on the spot decisions about. Sean Tucker recommended it to me.
I found your location :). Thanks for the video
Hi Thomas, thanks very much for your continued excellent content. I have a question for you: I am going to give my first talk to a camera club but I am struggling to come up with a good structure and central theme for the talk. I am interested to know how you approach these types of talks and what you have found audiences enjoy the most. Best wishes
I refuse to watch your videos when is raining ! You are such a inspiration and a motivation for me, that I really want to get out and shooting more . Thank you
I like the reflected light image more as it brings out the tree colors of the middle section, giving the image greater depth. Hope the power issues get sorted soon and getting home late is forgiven LOL!
it's a wonderful place 20:50 .
Thank you
Very good video.
Admire your country. I would not dare to go that far off the main road alone in my country.
Always like watching your video.
Sometimes you don’t notice the light changing in architectural photography ether... we were shooting a kitchen, the exposures kept getting longer and longer... then we realized we were having an eclipse (we had totally forgotten about)
I did like the cross fade from van driving to head lights arriving nice touch. And you’re making me hungry with chicken coleslaw wraps. On your electrical problems it is rare to have lots of things fail like you have without some external reason. Cars often have earth return issues. Yes once a lead acid battery goes flat it’s had it but you may like to get the electrics checked. If you justify a 3 times more expensive battery then look at the LiFePo ones. You can discharge them very low and you get about 3 or 4 times as many charge cycles. Need the right charge controller though.
Tom,,,, pano pano pano 21:30,,,, also looking at tripod leg water immersion made me think about a previous video using old CD's, I used this solution for a while with the occasional snapped CD, I found a much better solution was the stripped out platters from a trio of unusable 3.5 inch hard disks, much more sturdy and perfect for my gitzo tripod, just thought it might be worth a mention, good luck getting the van sorted, i have a similar problem with the split charger on mine... doh...
Good video and please explain exposure time also..
thomas if you had a drone them fallen tree's would make a cracking top down shot with the water as a sky and the collapse land as a horizon
I think that was Sasquatch in the woods.. 👣
You have an electrical short in the van. That is why new battery will not hold charge I believe, it is probably ok. Disconnect things one at a time and see if battery drain keeps happening. Good luck and nice video!
Hey man, in regards to the solar.. Look to use a victron mppt charge controller they have an app which allows you to see what's going on via your phone. Also I'm not sure which panel you have but avoid the flat stick on type. Take a look on bimble solar. Com it will have everything you need in a range of budgets, but definitely look at the victron controller 👌
“I went on holiday with my wife and every morning I woke up and had nothing to do...” how you’re not living .in that van I do not know...😂
Of the two images I prefer the top one.
Hi tom you need to get Redarc power gear for your van super reliable Australian made fantastic gear
HI from Brlin, well done. May you can tell the name of your second weather app and the name of your tripod? I think you are a good VAN Driver, dont understand the circumstances here. ;-)
Have you checked the wires/connections? Maybe there is one loose or broken. Nice video 👍
Something to think about when you're editing footage from your Point of View camera. The microphone is heavily weighted to the right hand side. Maybe consider merging it to a mono track and sending to both the left and right mix?
For other Americans: "A fell (from Old Norse fell, fjall, "mountain") is a high and barren landscape feature, such as a mountain range or moor-covered hills."
I love the idea of a photo book. I’ve be waiting for yours to come out and I’d totally buy it. Love to have your work on my coffee table.
That shot @8:50 is worth printing, man ;-)
@thomasheaton
It’s E0 (zero). PV/DC input voltage is too low or no PV/DC. Check connections of PV/DC
Interesting you said Clear Outside is very accurate. In my experience it's been quite hit and miss but I don't know of any other equivalent app for different cloud heights.
still married? I know this problem with my wife having too little understanding for this passion. Nice video and shots, thanks for sharing!
Hey mate! Looks like E0 (zero), rather than E8.
Small attention to details: Licence plate on the van FII HTN (For I Is HeaToN)!
Solar panel in Blighty!! Ha,ha,ha
The last two pictures. A composite of them chould look good.
I'll tell you what Thomas, I really enjoyed watching this episode. You've come a long way but that's not to say this is a bad video. Quite the contrary. The way you've kept in the random elements (the guy lost and wanting directions, the phone call to home etc) all make it so real! I think I'll binge watch your old videos today while the sun is shining, and I can't go out to do photography because of my data analysis!!!!
