This feels like you're about to die from really long journey in the blistering cold. And as your bright eyes start fading, your soul ascends to the afterlife. Oh mah gahh so pretty
Lyrics: Yeah I don't realize Been gone so long That you are on your way What's your name, boy? What's your name, boy? I'll have you know that I'm on my way back And I... I don't realize Been gone so long That you are on your way. What's your name, boy? What's your name, boy? I'll have you know that I'm on my way back And I... So.... from what I've read about the story in this concept album, here's what I understand from it.... - The Wolf Is Loose: The protagonist is chosen, he's a werewolf and needs to place the crystal skull on top of the Blood Mountain in order to free himself from the curse, also, some hunters are chasing him - Crystal Skull: He searches for the Skull before starting to climb the mountain - Sleeping Giant: The song talks about the mountain itself(an inactive volcano, a sleeping giant) and the things and dangers in it. - Capillarian Crest: Not 100% sure, but I believe it's about him reaching a blood river and starting to see the mountain waking up after 12 years of silence - Circle Of Cysquatch: He finds a Cysquatch that warns him about the future and about the birchmen he'll find, I believe he tells the protagonist about him being able to return to it's human form if he does his mission - Colony Of Birchmen: Birchmen are half men-half trees, and I believe he goes through a colony of them(duh) and as he's going on, he starts returning to it's wolf form. - Hunters Of The Sky: Back in his wolf form, the hunters find him again, and he runs away from them, either that, of he runs away from some other creatures(dragons maybe?). - Hand Of Stone: He starts realizing that he can control his power to help himself to defeat other creatures, it is said that he finds a weird rose thing that gives him hallucinations. - This Mortal Soil: A woman tells him about what will happen when he reaches the top and places the crystal skull, she tells him the future(only logical explanation I found about this one) - Siberian Divide: When reaching the top, he gets caught on a blizzard where he becomes frost bitten and frozen, he starts having hallucinations, he sees a snow queen who tells him that it's ok to start eating his own flesh, he sees an aurora borealis and he thinks it's god, he starts feeling warm inside and sees the skull react, he finds enough courage to keep climbing to make it to the top and put the skull on the three horned face. - Pendulous Skin: This is the one I've been trying to figure out, but it's not so clear, there are various theories, some say it's about him completing his mission and becoming a dog that's found by humans, some say he dies at the end of Siberian Divide and that this is an epilogue of his thoughts or something like that. I believe he either gets some sort of help(by an angel or some creature) and completes his mission and eventually flies away from his body to start a new life in a human form, but I'm not sure at all. This is how I believe the story goes, if you have any thoughts, opinions, ideas or theories of your won, feel free to share them with me. I love this album, but I need to know how it ends, and what the story means (also in Crack The Skye, but I feel that's more complex)
I think you are nuking it. there is no real story other than the notes being played. do you need any more to understand outside whatever you feel when you listen?
Emi Grant yeah I just know enough about mastodon to know they probably just did a bunch of acid and other substances and then recorded the music. In a few interviews they are open about their disdain for vocals and lyrics in general (or having to provide them rather). They name the songs based on how the music sounds. There is no underlying story about a dude that's a werewolf.
doe john It IS a concept album, the song names relate to other things maybe, but there is a story, in fact, there's been persons that have been told parts of the story by band members
Among the many songs from Mastodon that touch my soul. It's got positivity, negativity, certainty, uncertainty, sorrow, agony, truth, harmony, peace, order. The songs grabs my life and shows it to me, in front of my face and says "Do you see? This is what it has been.", in a neutral manner. The song is neutral, but I'm a too pessimistic being. The song is basically some entity that talks to me, it speaks facts. Facts about my life. And it's my place to decide what to do with that. Should I take my own life already? Or let it flow its course for whatever meaningless purpose, just for the heck of it, might not really know what destiny has in store for me and the world. This song, Elephant Man and Joseph Merrick, unique pieces.
+Doom Dope Hi man, I love Mastodon too but please don't take your life. If you ever want to talk about anything, then please email me on jamiefearon@gmail.com Peace and Love
+Jamie Fearon I'm all right, thank you. My life has recently got a decent turn. I was right, should just "let [my life] flow its course for whatever meaningless purpose, just for the heck of it, might not really know what destiny has in store for me and the world". 'Cause you really don't know what's in store for you! ;)) Could be anything. Could be exactly what you were dreaming for.
What the fuck are you on? Maybe it's just cause I'm drunk and can't understand shit. not trying to be rude, just genuinely have a misunderstanding f what you're saying.
{Never take your life from you} this is the message I only try to promote amongst us, nor trama, nor weakness, nor sorrow, nor anger are any of theis the reason, to end what GOD has allowed us all to witness. A chance to see, to be, to love, to grow old with the one YOU CHOOSE TO LOVE, it's all on the long a narrow path. "GOD BLESS YOU ALL", "MASTODON", nuff said.
Markby VR oh yeah, at the end of their set on their last tour with Gojira and kvelertak, they played this song in the back ground as everyone was leaving and I remember Brann dedicating it to someone. rip
Such a beautiful song, it brings a tear to my eye every time. After finishing a goal you put your whole life into, not knowing what to do next... That's this song.
I found a very interesting theory on a lyrics site. - The Werewolf doesn't die atop the mountain, but is rescued when he is inches from death. A previous song mentions him chewing off his limbs, as well as becoming delirious. Now fast forward to Crack the Skye, about a paraplegic man who can make his soul leave his body. These two could be the same character. The Crystal Skull from this album could have given him the power to "astral travel" after he recovered from the events of this album.
I got into Mastodon a few months back and found this gem. It's probably my favorite mastodon song now, I'm trying to learn it but god damn Brett is a hybrid picking god, and I can barely hybrid pick at all. I just love the emotion of this song, it seems like a song that you roll the credits to after a great movie.
CombineRustler I'd say this song is more or less a take on the first two Joseph Merrick songs, but yeah, that eerie vocal effect gives you that "holy shit I'm high" feeling.
I listened to crack the skye while I was on shrooms and me and my bro were driving through a snowstorm while tripping and all I can remember is getting lost in the spirals and the sounds of that album.
When listening to this song, I like to imagine a place where there's no such thing as violence, greed or hate. Kinship, in a spectral land where beautiful creatures roam and live in harmony with humans. Under a violet sun, with emerald skies. In a place where spectral lights of all colors cascade across the dim plains of perfectly grown grass, where the ancient mastodons of old dwell.
Just 2 days ago I had my first psychedelic experience (on DMT) and listened to this song. It was super crazy and surreal and intense. The crazy thing about it was how what I was hearing felt like it was directly influencing my hallucinations. Like my trip was an insane interactive music video. I'm glad I chose this song. And did the DMT. saw some crazy shit

A lot people mentioning the solo, but the intro is legit one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard
The vocals are the prettiest part to me. I'm constantly singing the chorus to myself lmao such a crazy album
I think Brent should write some more psychedelic songs, because holy shit this is good.
On the surface it seems like a sort of happy song, but there is something so sad about it. It gives me chills every time I listen.

It is a concept album about traversing to a mountain top. This being the final, the lyrics are non existent in the booklet, just him drifting off.
Man, this shit actually gave me shivers
Has both a wicked trippy feel and a simple good ol' boy feel to it at the same time. This song is a beast.
It starts like a Unusual Acoustic Piece and ends like Santana, Led Zeppelin 70´s Prog Rock ...
Its just BRILLIANT Music ..
Jimi Hendrix I got that Led Zepp vibe too, and maybe just a little bit of Rush, but I'm not sure. But yeah, this song is awesome
Jimi Hendrix Oh now I know! I hear some Pink floyd here, just like some other Mastodon songs
Lyrics:
Yeah
I don't realize
Been gone so long
That you are on your way
What's your name, boy?
What's your name, boy?
I'll have you know that
I'm on my way back

Been gone so long
That you are on your way.
