    Oh man, this is really depressing. I lived in Venice for 13 years in the 80s/90s. I loved it there. I was poor and It was cheap to live by the beach there. Rents are now too expensive for most people. I just didn't think it would come to this. Unfortunately, L.A. is now a third-world city with no middle class. There's no compassion for the mentally ill. I hate that this is where things have ended up. I appreciate that you're documenting this.

      @@davidsirmons Nope. Many of these people come from all over the US because the climate is tolerable. Most have serious mental health problems. California needs to figure this out but it is not a "failed state" - come on! Probably one of the only states with a budget surplus. More innovation than any state or country. This is a complicated problem that requires compassion for the homeless but also compassion for the local home and business owners. You can't just throw these people in jail or ship them to your state. LA has a housing shortage so what would you do?

I was told to never give homeless people some money because they spend it to buy alcohol. There was even a really terrible case I remember. A man used his welfare food money to buy the cheapest water bottles to buy alcohol (if you bring back 1-2 empty bottles of water it is even enough for a beer). That's not true. This couldn't happen to anyone of us unless you made the choice to live this way. When I did it. I felt a lot more freedom. It came at a price. The worst thing a loner can do is to put themselves in such a position because eventually you lose your mind when you're not around people. If you're on drugs it only makes it worse. I dealt with a lot of different individuals in my lifetime and I'm glad that I didn't stay living in my car. I did find friends to live and I can't imagine ever going back to that lifestyle. I guess I wanted to shock myself out of my mundane life. I've learned that what I've read about people are not to blame for the situation was bulshit. Just like when I see studies or reports on the reason why people are poor in this country. People say oh it's because they're lazy or because they don't know how to save money or how to invest. Of course you get the report saying all that's not the reason it's because of inequality or wealth inequality. It's because we don't have the same money as those other guys which is somewhat true but let's face the facts a bunch of them are lazy bastards who rather just sleep on the street. We are seeing a lot more of them because we've allowed it to happen as a society.

Families are different as well and they depend on each other for survival. The same goes for Island countries like Cuba. Apparentlly there's no crime in Cuba but we know that isn't true. If people squatted on the street in another country like Cambodia we would be jailed for it. Our governor in California made this homeless situation worse when he tried to cut cost by releasing convicted criminals early.

    • @magicalselena
      @magicalselena Před 3 lety +6

      Hey Ernie, I don't see how it could not happen to most of us? Most people living in this country live from paycheck to paycheck and could lose their jobs at any time. I agree with you on some people choice to live that way. Every person has had something in their life that causes them to be homeless. You can't help but feel bad for them. No matter how they got where they are. This country needs a government and a President one day that will think and do for all the people not just for the very rich. There is no reason anyone in this country should be without. It makes me sick to see people be treated like they don't matter. We as a nation could be so much better. I am glad to hear that your life has gotten better for you. One other thing no one should be looked down on or treated differently on how much money they have. How they dress or look or the color of there skin.

Maybe it is a reaction to constantly losing everything. Poor people in other countries may not have much either, but people don't steal it either in the name of cleaning up. There are also areas set up for homeless to build little shanties. We don't have those in the USA. Maybe that is what we need, a place where we can give every homeless person a 16' by 16' spot to live on.

      Bro...youtube took me to your channel. Don't put the homeless in a bad light. They are not there because they want to be nor are they lazy and many of them do not have mental or substance abuse problems. Their main problem is they have no income and they can't afford shelter. Most of these folks want to have a job so they can get off the streets. The government and on a larger scale, society has failed these people. America is in disrepair and the homeless are a result of that problem. I suggest you use your platform to work locally to help your fellow citizens get off the streets. There are probably a few abandoned buildings in your city and perhaps the homeless can refurbish the property so they can live there. A community group in Philadelphia recently got a few families off the streets with direct action against their city to house homeless. Democracy Now has a piece reporting this. Have a look at this and perhaps get involved in that way.

      With the amount of people who can't pay the rent due to covid It is projected many more will be homeless. Unfortunately, this won't be resolved anytime soon. One take is that the last recession caused many people to opt out of buying homes and to rent, raising the prices of rental everywhere making it harder for many to actually find a job to keep up with the cost of rent. It's really unfortunate if this is true we can expect homelessness to grow even more in the future.

He explained he has faced a lot of violent trauma. Also, hoarding is not a life long behavior always. If you are living in constant uncertainity, your possessions are always being stolen, it will worsen hoarding behavior. And trying to find help puts people through the ringer. You get the run around a lot. Shelters are often full and some cases even more chaotic.

    German in Venice...you did a really good job with this video series. This interview in Part 2 was very professional as well as respectful towards the homeless man being interviewed. I find myself thinking that if this was the year 1810, this man would not seem abnormal at all. He would have land to roam and do his hunter/gathering, which is exactly what he’s doing. He’s looking for resources.
    Socialism is terrifying, but Capitalism on steroids really seems to be a huge contributor to this mass homelessness. But I digress.
