Stiff Chain Link

- Bicycle tips: Stiff bike chain link are indicated by a skip or click as you turn the pedals: we' show you how to do an quick easy on the road fix. Usually you'll hear a click sound about 3rd or 4th pedal revolution, this probably indicates a stiff bicycle link. If you're out on the road cycling, have some one hold up the back of your bike while you turn the crank. Look for movement as the chain goes through the pully wheels. You can then usually find the link that is stiff. If you're not carrying a chain tool with a loosening cradle: Work the link side to side to loosen. If that doesn't work, carefully use a small screwdriver of multi tool working it back and forth between the plates of the stiff link to loosen the pins. This will usually free up the link. Also look for broken or bent links that may require chain repair on the road or chain replacement when you get home. These techniques will work on scram, shimano or other types of chains.
In the process of bicycle repair or maintenance you should also check the chain for a broken or bent chain links or plates that will require chain replacement. - Jak na to + styl

Took me way too long to find this video! Finally fixed the problem. Thank you!
Thanks. We seem to have less of a problem with stiff links these day with the advent of master links which are used instead of pushing a pin partly our and then using a chain tool to pin the chain back together. See:

Big thumbs up for the screwdriver solution, which solved what wiggling didn't!
+Kevin Nolan Me too. Used one side of a needle nose plier. Worked it back and forth and link came unstuck.
Your video helped a lot. Additionally, I put a bit of Brasso between the offending links and worked the chain as you showed to polish the in-betweens a bit. It now moves as easily as the other links.
Thank you Tony! Fixed my issue in under 2 minutes!
Thanks Tony, the screwdriver trick did the job!

Many of the newer chain tools lack a loosening shelf which is fine if you are using a master link. These techniques have also helped me over the years. Regards, Tony
Thanks for your useful tips. I had a very stubborn link. I clamped the 2 adjacent links with 2 pliers over a piece of cloth and twist them gently. Didn't manage to loosen them using my fingers.
Good tip. "Gently" is a key word. Thanks for the feedback and safe cycling, Tony

Alright, thanks a lot for this tutorial, helped me solve my problem, and if anyone is having trouble with his chain link, use some chain lube (olive oil works in a pinch), look above the link and see if it's aligned with the rest of the chain (that was my problem) and then push it in the opposite direction.
Yes, working it back and forth after lubrication is an excellent choice.
Thank you

Hi Tony, thanks for the video. I followed your instruction fixed the stiff links on my bike chain. But after a ride or two they kept occurring again. They are on a used bike I recently bought, probably not used for years. Is there a way to fix them all? Or could there be some other problem? Thanks again.
The chain probable has some corrosion/rust in the links. Your best bet is to remove the chain and soak it in Evaporust or spay with Knocker Loose (both available from Amazon). Let it sit 24 hours. Clean with soap and water, rinse and dry thoroughly. Put it back on the bike, give it a good coat of lubricant, back pedal to get the lubricant into the chain links, let sit overnight before wiping off the excess lubricant. Works well.
OR
Just buy a new chain, making sure you get the right speed chain (8,9,10 speed etc.).
Good luck and let me know how you do. Regards, Tony
@@tony10speed OK will do. Than you.
just saved me 30 bucks thanks dude
Your welcome. Regards, Tony
still tight at 3:02 can see the bad link...my chain is doing those so watching to learn how to fix
I had 2 bad stiff the one i got out working it then folding it up stiff then tapping it with a screw driver, that one came out and the other one i gotta work on some more but chain doesnt pop/clank now going around at that spot, since going around that lower spindle there was 2 stiff links that thing really jumped to the point i couldnt ride it safely.
I just had an issue with a stiff chain link, and unlike this issue it was because a small piece of debris was stuck in between the link, I had to remove it with a tiny pin because this didn't work. Just a heads up if this doesn't fix your issue, look for small debris because it isn't impossible.
Screwdriver trick sorted it 👍

Hi Tony!
I have an odd situation with my chain. My bicycle is new. I have Shimano HG62 cassete, Shimano Deore Shadow RD, Shimano Deore 2 gears crankset. Manufacturer installed KMC X10 chain. I adjusted rear & front derailleur, degreased and lubed chain, checked chain tension - all was perfect. My first ride was about 20 km and I noticed crack just every 3-4 rotation of pedals. It was stiff link. But reason was small damage between outer and inner plate of the link (looks like gear tooth crumpled metal between plates and it hinder them to move). No attempts to fix it helped. I thought it was bad luck, I installed brand new Shimano HG95 10s chain. Of course checked Shimano manual - it is compatible with my HG62 10s cassette. And I once again checked speeds shifting, chain tension, distance between big back gear and derailleur upper roller... Degreased and lubed chain. I was happy with how smooth speeds are shifted. I rode 10 km - all was perfect: almost silent chain, very smooth shifts. In about 5-7 km again noticed some regular crack... When returned home and dismounted chain - I was shocked: 2 stiff links! Both have light damages: this time between inner plate and roller. I thoroughly checked every tooth on cassette and crankset. All looks normal. No wear at all (mileage is just less than 50 km). No tooth deformations. I didn't make any extreme load during my ride, no falls, no hits to crankset or cassette. Just can't understand what to do.
Have you check the rear cassette or chainrings for damage that can be causing the chain problem? See:
czcams.com/video/g5uqTNmikro/video.html
czcams.com/video/sXdrOQpr-Zg/video.html
It sounds like some other damaged drivetrain component may be resulting in your chain problems. If you can't solve it on your own, you'll need some help from your local bicycle store. Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony
This is magic
Just some neat tricks I've tried over the years. Glad it was informative. Regards, Tony
Your a goddamn wizard
problem already fixed but i like to know what cousing that problem?any ideas?
The thing that causes most stiff links is compressing the side plates too tightly together, a natural result of using a chain tool that presses in the chain pin under great force to install the chain.
The two main other causes of stiff links are rust, and overly aggressive shifting under load.
Rust can occur between the plates, without being obvious from the outside, when water wicks in . The riding conditions and your choice of chain lube are contributing factors. A rust bound link can usually be freed by forcing the chain to flex at the pin, the normal way (not sideways). I do this by sliding 2 screwdrivers into the chain on either side and using some brute force. Once the link is free, add a drop of oil and work the link back and forth until it's truly free. Once it's decent, riding will only make it better. Use decent chain lube to prevent a recurrence.
Shifting under load and cause stiff links. The hard impact of the sprocket tooth on the edge of the plate is the same as if you put a chisel against it and hammered. This type of damage sometimes be seen with the naked eye, and can be harder to fix. Sometimes repeated flexing will loosen it, but you may have to carefully file the nick down a bit. Again once it's decent enough to run OK it gets better over time as the mating surfaces wear. Prevent this by easing up on the pedal pressure as you shift.

@@tony10speed it was hapening many times with 4 difrent chines ,now just for fun make a bit longer and foult like disapier .for now.a bit wierd as using same style rear star and chine think could be problem with rear fork as usin bafang 1kwh motor for while
@@goldenarms1485 Sorry but I can't understand the translation in your comment. I think you may have to consult your local bicycle shop. Tony
Does this cause of the skipping while pedaling hard?
Not usually. You'll feel the chain seem to jump to another gear and back about every 3rd crank revolution. It's quite distinct.
Yes it actually can. On smaller cogs.
@@subaru_mint Thanks for the input. Learn something new every day. Regards, Tony
did this, although not with a screwdriver but with a long nose pliers
That's a nice tip. Thanks, Tony
This didn't work for me. After 30 minutes and my hand hurting. I had to use a chain pin tool to push the pin half way out...I then pushed it back in place. Links is no longer sticking. My chain was a KMC X99.
Sorry to hear of your troubles. Did the problem occur when you installed a new chain or out on the road? Tony

@@tony10speed Thankyou sir !
Mine is rusty and stiff as hell. I tried to ride it and the damn derailed collided with the inner wheel !!
Time for a new chain and a check to see if you need a new cassette. Doing a quick 2 minute cleanup and proper lubrication every 150-200 miles should keep things going well for the season. See:
Quick 2 minute drivetrain cleanup:

Mine is not fixing its looks like inner side which touches ring teeth is broken. Maybe I have to go bicycle master.
Sounds link the chain link is broken and a new chain may be in order. Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony
Yes several links is broken so bicycle master inserted new chain, mechanism of link is damaged so bad it was impossible to loosen it.
Looks exactly like what mines doing
Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony
@@tony10speed I tried Wd-40 and working it back and fourth. I tried using my hands and bending it side to side and also a screw driver. It's a brand new bike. I'm taking it in to the shop to get fixed. I don't have the right tools I need.
@@slash2jimi That shouldn't be on a brand new bike unless they erred in when installing the chain with a pin rather then using a master link. And on a brand new bike, they shouldn't charge you. They may try using the "loosing bar" on a chain breaker, but you have to be very careful and put only a tiny amount of pressure on the pin of the stiff link. Stick around and watch what they do on the stiff link and let me and our viewers know. Regards, Tony
hoping this is a life saver, just put on a new chain and rear cassette and have several stiff chain links
