Brandy Ellis has suffered from depression for so long that she decided surgery was the best route. The surgery, which located the nerve connections that cause depression, brought on a sudden remission from despair in Brandy, who has spent years in a nearly vegetative depression.

I watched this whole episode and I have to say it really helped me. I thank you PBS for your recognition of Bi-polar depression of what a devastating decease this is. Whats more is how common it is now because people are opening up to it and realizing there is help out there. Unlike years ago it was kept a secret. thank you again to everyone involved in the production of Ride the tiger.

This is truly amazing. I, myself, suffer from bipolar disorder, type 2, but also essential tremor. I had my DBS surgery close to five years ago to combat the second and it was a huge success, of which I'm very thankful. However, moving further into the future, I'm really curious to learn if tremor patients with DBS also can benefit from mental disorder DBS by adding additional electrodes, all controlled by the same stimulant device. That is, for me, one of the true wonders and questions of the future. One thing is for sure thought, the wonders of DBS are already amazing, but looking into the future, they're truly endless.

This surgery is not rosy as it sounds. My father had it. He couldn't even swallow water after surgery. Lost his walking ability mostly and caught an infection during battery replacement. Entire DBS had to be removed to cure the infection. They decided it was too risky to put it back. Now he cant talk or walk and bed ridden for the rest of his life thanks to DBS. He flew to the surgery on his own. Even doctors dont understand how this works. They will blame it on decease progression if something goes wrong.

Me too it’s horrendous and I’ve got PTSD which this works for. I don’t know where to get it tho? And I’ve had enough 💔

I hope that someone starts a DBS for depression trial in the pacific NW. I've talked to a few DBS for depression study organizers and found out that I qualify, but I would have to move out of state and live there for at least six months. :(

I have a liver enzyme disorder, and it targets those medications. So none of them work. I'm in the ketamine program now. I hope it works.. This seems extreme, but I've tried 32 medications and had this for 17 years... it feels like no one understands, not even other depressed people. I feel very alone.
