- NHL Free Agency is officially underway!
The New Jersey Devils have signed defensemen Brett Pesce and Brenden Dillon along with forward Stefan Noesen.
The defense has been improved with the signing of these two players. We also added a nasty forward to the bottom 6.
The NJ Devils are a much improved and more physical team for sure.
HEAVIER. EDGIER. MORE VIOLENT!

I think moreso than just replacing Marino and Bahl, Pesce and Dillon are replacements for what we lost in Severson and Graves. And based on the contract that both of those guys signed last offseason, I think we'd all prefer what Fitz did yesterday.
Marchessault would've been nice but not crushed that we missed out on him. I rather see Timo not be blocked from PP1 time and consistent top 6 minutes like he was last season. He was a different player once Toffoli was traded and we need that guy from Day 1 this season.
Was hoping we'd get Skinner for the top 6 but maybe Tarasenko could be a nice addition on the cheap. Mercer not being signed yet makes me think Fitz could be up to something.
@NothingToPointOut24 With Hamilton out for most of last season, we REALLY missed Severson and Graves. I am overall thrilled with the improvements Fitz made. At this juncture, any coaching staff that doesn't keep Timo on PP1 is foolish. The man is a BULL! He can score the dirty goals as well as snipe. TIMO TIME! Timo obviously thrived once he was moved to his natural RW. To this day I cannot understand why Lindy let him rot on LW and starved him of PP time. It makes NO sense. We all know how he was used in San Jose when he was thriving!
I don't blame you for being upset about "big game hunting" not really taking place. You're one of the most passionate Devils fans and it's expected to see you "wear your heart on your sleeve". You're about to hit 4k subs because you do!
Devils are good to go for next season and the only thing to do is back what we got :D

The money thay stamkos got was crazy we were nevwr gonna sighn him for that much.. i think this team is def much improved i just would have liked a top 6 foward.. whos playing on jacks like next year??
@JSnow-rv8ls I would have passed on Stamkos at that price. He went for that bag $ The team is way better regardless that we missed on the Top 6 guy. Maybe something will materialize throughout the course of the season or at the deadline. The Top 6 is a big question mark at the moment. Will be very interesting to see how it all plays out. If Hughes and Nemec improve on D we’ll be just fine. Our wall play will certainly be better with the new arrivals. LGD!

Last year complaints were the coaching, goaltending, defense, and lack of toughness. I think all of that was addressed. Top 6 wing would be cherry on top.

Dillon was 10th in hits last season, also Cotter is only 24 and looks like he could be great. would love to have Rico back too. The big needs last season was Goaltending, D, and toughness we absolutely addressed those and moved out some underperforming contracts. I think when Stammer signed with Nashville Marsh decided, tax break plus that roster.

Looking on Capfriendly we have 6.776m remaining. Mercer & Foote still need new deals... However, Marchessault & Stamkos will both be 38 at the end of their contracts so both of those deals are a little dicey... If we didn't have Palat gambling & fitting Marchessault on the roster would definitely be worth it. I guess next off-season Palat gives us a 10 team trade list so *hopefully* we can move him then to avoid a buyout and find a younger replacement.
Vegas signed Samsonov before Schmid. Still wonder if anyone's going to take a chance on him as their backup.

You’re right Ace…it’s crazy how improved this team should be defensively. Markstrom and Allen instead of last year’s goalies. Pesce and Dillon instead of Marino and Bahl. We score plenty of goals and now we’ve improved our bottom 6 too.

Not a Fitzy fan, but he remade a tissue soft team. So this team should be vastly improved. That's a big issue for me, just how incredibly sawft the Devils were built. Hopefully that's in the rear view mirror.

We still have Jonas as a trade chip and some pics so we might still be able to land a top six it's only July 2nd. And Mercer didn't get offered a brand new contract. His offer was tendered. I think that was a smart call on both ends. Almost like a bridge deal like brat did. I really think this is a make or break season for Mercer. He has a lot to prove

@runninwiththedevils your getting your hopes too high. I think he's done pretty good so far. I think he'll still do something else for the top/middle six.
Last season Nico developed a bit of a snarl to him. If you watched him when he wasn't injured. Of course he threw his weight around and he didn't take crap. I think he realized how embarrassing it was that Florida threw us around and he was tired of it. He started to lead by example and even though he is on the medium to smaller side he still added a little sandpaper. He was no. Brad marchand but he's still toughened up a bit. I really do like our acquisitions. I think they're going to propel us deeper into the offensive zone with authority

I'm no longer pissed about the Holtz and Schmid trade. Schmid wanted off the team, and both he and Holtz were upset on how they were treated. I can't blame them to a degree, but you can't have cancers like that in your locker room.
As for Holtz specifically, he had time with both Nico and Hughes' lines last season and couldn't fit in on either. He couldn't keep up and just floated on offense. Maybe that would have changed this season if he had another chance, but it is what it is. I'll take this nastier Devils team over having Holtz.
@MrZeek1519 I am still not thrilled with the trade, but I have cooled off about it. Holtz still is only 22. I wanted to see him get at least a small audition under Keefe. Overall I am very happy with the improvements the team made yesterday

In my opinion i also think he knows that we are going on almost 20 SEASONS without a Stanley cup not including 2012. 2023 was just the beginning of what's to come hopefully in the future seasons, for the boys in black and red, and i think fitzy sees us Devil fans want our team to bring a cup back to New Jersey badly, so he's finally decided to put together the possible solution and team to do it.

Our 2nd line is weak. The Holtz failure hurts. Our two 2nd line wingers should be on the 3rd and the 3rd wingers on the fourth line. If Bastian is still playing at all then we’re not nearly good enough.
Made progress for sure on the back end but still a fringe playoff team at best.

There was too much influx last year to get a goalie. It was obvious a coaching change had to be made. Get your coach, your goalie and prove that you are serious this year. The Devils have a great core. The PP line went to crap when Hamilton went down. Players are going to want to play here. Pesce wanted to play here and he signed. I'm not sold on Siegenthaler and could see a trade happening there.
@stevewright1539 I still wanted a goalie last year to give us a fighting chance of making the playoffs. A lot of people are still hoping Siegs is dealt. I think he survived the mass house cleaning. Time will tell. Overall I am happy with our day today. We are a much better team. LET'S GO DEVILS!!!
A lot of needs were taken care of.
I don't care about missing out on top 6 guys as they were all VASTLY overpaid and all are on major downsides of their careers.
But Fitz has to be creative to get a top 6 guy with Mercer's contract needed to be addressed. They have a few draft picks to work with and getting that top 6 guy might have to come in season, maybe close to the deadline. The Devils have three 2nd round picks in 2025 and can easily trade one of them at the deadline.
@ramram349 I would have loved Marchessault at $5.5 personally. Fitz definitely needs to get creative for a Top 6 guy. I am curious to see how this all shakes out

My only realistic wish was duclair he signed for 3.5 AAV, that’s very doable and would’ve been nice next to jack and Jesper but glad we got the bottom 6, defense and goalies figured out. Scoring goals shouldn’t be our issue.

I really think the Devils' forward group is great as is, assuming healthy. Having Jack, Nico, Bratt, Timo, Mercer with Dougie and Luke is actually very scary.

Very pleased with Noesen and Dillon - I wanted both of those guys. Pesce is fine, definitely improves our D over Marino. He's much better at preventing both east-west seam and slot passes. Should be a better partner for Luke as well. I know we're lacking that top 6 winger we wanted, but they address their biggest weaknesses from ly.

Devils are #4 in the division. Playoffs will come down to the final week. 90-92 point team right now. Improvement but some serious weak points remain.

@@runninwiththedevils Not a chance as we’re currently built. I see Mercer and Palat slotted as 2nd line wingers and they’re not. They’re 3rd liners. Cotter and Noesen slotted as 3rd liners and they’re truly 4th liners. We also still depend too heavily on the health of Jack and Nico and that will always be an issue. Jack is a 50-60 game/yr player who is easily injured and certainly not built for when serious tight checking hockey is played Feb thru April and definitely in the playoffs.
Too many other teams top 6 are far better than ours. I’m not confident that the Jack/Nico/Bratt/Meier core will ever be “deep run” or championship material as Devils. It may take another 2-3 years for Devils leadership to come to that realization. I’m big on bringing on Brady T to bring a different stronger character element much the same way Scott Stevens did. And we gave up a Hall of Famer to get Stevens…..much the same way I’d package Jack to bring in Brady. Without a second of hesitation.
@johnt1115 I want Brady more than anything. You have to realize that the team is definitely not trading either Hughes brother, so there is no point in even mentioning it IMO. But in a vacuum, I would make the deal too
Holtz was given every chance with Jack/jesp/nico/timo this year. There is a reason a top 5 in Ws coach all time, another well respected coach, and a gm who played and has worked magic since became a gm. Stop with the holtz double fisting already.

Next season, Holtz will score 30 goals in Vegas' top 6 and will in the playoffs

@larryblumenfeld1623 There is plenty of "Jack Protection" on the lower lines. If you mess with Jack, you may not be dealt with immediately....but someone is coming for your head shortly. I would have LOVED Duclair at the deal he signed, and think he could have been a potential Top 6 guy

All I know is that I saw a guy/girl earlier that said that they're a newer fan of hockey and that your videos help them out a lot. We don't need a top 6 forward.. we needed a better goalie better defense and better bottom 6 .. granted shipping off holtz gave us a better bottom 6 immediately but adding cotter and one of the Travis and the texans back makes us sooo much better on the bottom 6.
The offense that this team expects from a healthy Hamilton, L.Hughes and Nemec on the back end will offset the lack of a top 6 acquisition until the deadline, when options will become available.

I’m super amped about the seasons to start now but I’m legit concerned with Hamilton and that injury he sustained. I’m worried he might easily re-aggravate his injury or just flat out won’t be the same.

I will say that I am mostly okay with what went on. I don't approve the deal involving Holtz and Akira ,but all in all not too bad. Are we going to be a better team? Absolutely. Are we going to make it to the playoffs? Likely I say. Are we winning a cup? I don't think so.

This season will be dictated by our decision of Dougie or Luke on PP1. If we put Luke on PP1 our season will be a failure. If we put Dougie, our season will be excellent.

Tied to Nashville AGAIN!!..just like in 95', our 1st cup year, all we heard all playoffs long, and even all summer long, was how John McMullen was gonna move The Devils to Nashville, smh..what a team that year as well..The Dev's not only won their 1st Cup in 95', they SWEPT the Presidents Trophy winners that year in the finals, The Red Wings..nobody gave us a chance and we destroyed that team..size and Goaltending wins championships, period..looking forward to this season..btw, if you haven't seen the Stevens hit on Kozlov during the finals that year of 95', I suggest you go watch it immediately..it was when Hockey was Hockey, I know Ace would agree with me on that one..Peace ✌️

The amount of disrespect the Devils got going into the 95 Finals was downright laughable and my team also loaded up my wallet as I went against my principles of betting on my team (the Devils were huge underdogs) and made some serious money.

ik we all wanted a big top 6 forward addition however the offseason is not nearly over and on top of that we were already one of the best offensive teams in the league. we were 12th in the league in goals for per game with jack nico bratt meier and dougie all missing time, and alot of them missing time at the same time, thats ridiculous to think about. we are going to be top 5 in both goals for per game and goals against per game unless the injuries are even worse than last season

@@runninwiththedevils even with injuries we should still be good because of the depth fitz has given us this season. we have 6 top 4 defensman and a bunch of guys that could be bottom pair guys in the nhl like kovacevic, desimonne, hatakka, even guys like colton white and seamus casey. we are now literally stacked in the back end. id love to add guys like coleman and mcgroarty which is possible if we move someone like a bastian but we dont even need to those moves would just bring us over the top.

@@runninwiththedevils not even remotely close to the same type of player. Mcgroarty is a legit powerforwwrd who so far has developed as good as you can hope for and is nhl ready. He plays a very translatable game unlike holtz.

I think not getting a goalie during last season will end up being the right move long term. This team was too beat up and too creampuff to make any type of run in the playoffs. So what would the point have been? aside from getting a lower draft pick and missing out on this super high ceiling russian phenom. Do i think fitz saw it the same at that time? No. I think calgary was trying to rape the devils for markstrom, he basically said so in that end of season presser.

Nhl and nfl need to fix this bullshit with the cap and certain teams having an advantage because of income taxes.. maybe we get henrique or a pto walks on and has a magic year or a prospect steps up.. ehh we'll see.. also im hearing dillen is a mean player but i havent watched him play so i dont know
@1verge1 I never condone tanking. I wish we got a goalie midseason to at least give us a shot at the playoffs. Making the playoffs and going through the battles are invaluable lessons for teams; especially a team as young as ours. I don't know how they can level the playing field with the no income tax states. It is a major advantage that I bet all of them pitch HEAVILY to Free Agents.

We didn’t LOSE Holtz. Holtz, the player, failed himself. He had more than ample opportunity all year last year and ultimately failed.
When we drafted Holtz I knew this would happen. He doesn’t fit in our system. He can be on any other team in this league and put up 30 goals because he’ll post up on the power play. He was never going to fit here, and as Fitzy’s first pick as GM, it was an EPIC FAIL.

Dougie was hurt last year and that was a big reason we weren’t that good.

He's a liability defensively and we no longer need him on the power play. This is his fourth stop in this league for a reason

@ramram349 There are a few of us at least. He was the only guy with toughness on the roster for a majority of last season. I became a fan when he crushed Anders Lee to the ice twice on the same shift, before Lee went after him...they dropped the gloves, and Smith pummeled him, leaving him bloodied!
