HOW TO REMOVE STRIPPED/ DAMAGED CRANK ARMS USING A GEAR-BEARINGS PULLER

  • If your bike's crank arms' thread (for 3-piece square taper crank arm sets only) are stripped for some reason, you can use a gear bearings puller to remove it. A proper crank arm removal tool will not work in this case. The thread of your crank removal tool will just get stripped too if you try it.
    Always take caution when using tools to fix your bike. Wear proper protection gears for health and safety.

    I will use a CYCLUS crank threading repair kit, it will be with a threaded pin slide guide that will thread into or onto the spindle it will work with both types of square taper spindles, bolt or nutted, then slide on the re-treading cutting tool to cut new threads, now it's a bit over sized so then you'll need to use the crank puller that is supplied with this tool kit. For not so badly stripped crank arms I'll use a a basic Bicycle Research thread chasing tool of which I'll always try to use first if not then on comes the CYCLUS tooling, of course these tools will only work with basic 22mm threaded crank arms and these tools are well over 20 years old and it funny how no one knows about them, the bicycle research tool has been around for nearly 40 years, for sure all well equipped bike shops should have these tools on hand, I know my shop will have these tools on hand, so to say my work shop is well equipped, for my customers it's mind boggling for them when they are viewing my tooling assortment. Happy wrenching on your bicycles.

    This puller can easily bend your chainwheels beyond repair. Instead, use a penetrating oil, let it soak and then tap the crank arm next to the tapered square, preferably from two sides, using two hammers simultaneously. Clean your threads as good as you can and try the crank puller again! If it still doesn't budge, take the bike off the stand and ride it with the crank arm nut removed! Do some sharp accelerations and drastic moves, but be aware! The crank arm may work itself loose and pop right off. Last resort: The giant puller that may wreck your chainwheels. Hopefully you'll get it off before.

    WOW - this works!! What make and model is your puller? I can find many that look like it but not the same thing. If you have a link to it, that'd be great! Thank you!

    it is a tapered shaft. Just use a non marring mallet and give it a sharp whack on the side, while keeping pressure on it

    Btw if just your left crank is stripped you can remove it by unscrewing the bottom bracket and putting something between the left crank and the frame. The bb will pull the shaft axie
    and pull the crank off

    Hi. Could you tell me how many inches your puller is? Or how many millimeters can the puller open at most?

    • @juan1ride
      @juan1ride  Před 9 měsíci

      Sorry to reply late, the puller is a foot long and it can open to about 6 inches i think

    I too own a gear puller, but they always are a last resort. Tyipcally you destroy the crank, but if it's your only option... I have used my gear puller in the shop a couple of times, but always explain to the customer what is about to happen.

    Probably better than a rubber mallet. Which is what I resorted to.

    i expected to not destroy gear rings, smaller puller could do that

    • @juan1ride
      @juan1ride  Před 4 měsíci

      Not sure that will work but you can give it a go.... Try soaking it in ac90 or WD-40, heat it up with hair blower before applying some force on the middle of chainring

      @makantahi3731 Před 4 měsíci

      @@juan1ride if you tried to push in legs of smaller puller and hook it on inner part of gears rings, but if you had to replace all, (not just bottom bracket) then it is ok
