- During the Second World War, there were a huge number of war crimes committed by the different nations involved. Some of the worst massacres saw a group of German soldiers executing hundreds and thousands en mass. The Einsatzgruppen were formed with only one goal in mind, mass murder. They were initially overseen by Reinhard Heydrich, who gave them permission to commit horrendous atrocities in which its estimated that over 2 million people were killed in.
The Einsatzgruppen were the Nazi paramilitary death squads who followed the Wehrmacht advances, and would deal with civilians and those deemed enemies of the Nazis. They would round up hundreds of civilians, force them to dig their own graves before then executing them by gunshot. They massacred men, women and children and were known for murdering thousands each day. Two of the largest Einsatzgruppen massacres were the Babi Yar and the Rumbula massacre, in which dozens of thousands were killed in just a couple of days. They were despicable in their crimes, but after the Second World War very few members of the group were ever brought to justice.
The Einsatzgruppen trial brought a number of key members of the death squads to justice, however out of the thousands of men who committed massacres inside the group only a handful were ever executed for their crimes. This is seen as a huge injustice as those men who shot thousands escaped World War 2 with no punishment whatsoever. The Einsatzgruppen were a truly disturbing and shocking part of Hitler's Third Reich and mission to exterminate those groups he despised.

If you’re alluding to the use of atomic weapons to end the war, those were more than justified by saving probably 1,000,000 Allied lives, and an estimated 5,000,000 to 7,000,000 Japanese military and civilian lives. If Operation Downfall had been launched, it is very likely that Japan would have ceased to exist as a nation.
Most einsatzgruppen were never brought to justice, this world are full of injustice.

I am a man. I could not hold my tears when I saw the mother shot 8:35 while holding her child tightly. A mother who still tried to protect her child even in the final moments of her life, the highest form of love.

In many cases, the Einsatzgruppen were the supervisors and organizers of the atrocities, the actual shootings carried out by local militias. This was most common in Ukraine and Lithuania.
Many cases or some? No doubt there were many collaborators but don't underplay the participation of the Germans themselves.
@@j3lny425 Many, I am afraid. It was standard policy to use local units for the purpose. Germans cared about Wermacht morale and tried not to involve common soldiers in mass executions of civilians. Even SS were not considered totally immune to psychological attrition of regular mass killing. Therefore extermination killing was either mechanized like in camps or outsourced to collaborating local units which were doing dirty job with dedication and cruelty. Estonia became judenfrei with minimal German assistance. Babiy Yar was mostly Ukraininan job, despite the fact that some hardcore Ukrainian nationalists were shot there. Lituanian (or Latvian?) extermination units were actively used abroad by Germans.

When taking orders, people tend to lend the morality assessment to the one giving the orders. Peer pressure is at play too. Though that still doesn’t absolve them; most damning is that throughout the history of the Einsatzgruppen, there was a small fraction of men that consistently took their commander’s offer to not engage in atrocities, without repercussions. The men that engaged in killings still are guilty.

As a teen, reading about the atrocities committed by the Einsatzgruppen, the Order police and all other paramilitary groups working with the Germans literally changed my outlook of life and my relationship to authority in general.

Great video. I wonder, there never seems to be a detailed video of the Einsatzgruppen's murders at the Ninth Fort in Lithuania, including all the murders carried out in November 1941, could you do one on that subject too!.
There's an excellent book about the Einsatzgruppen called Masters of Death by Richard Rhodes if you like to read. It talks about the massacres in Lithuania.

Thank you for remainding the public that it was Whermacht that was part and parcel of those atrocities. Regular, German army was NOT standing aside. They shared in "the efforts". 90% of all German war criminals were never prosecuted.

I really want to watch your videos. Those that I've been able to get through are informative, and I think it's important that they are accurate. It's the narration that puts me off. Your inflection at the end of a statement over and over and over is maddening. Why not just speak like you would speak if you were speaking to another person?
Yes - a dreadful narration - I don't understand why this man would have been chosen to do a narration of such importance. Surely there must have been someone who could have done the voiceover without the upwards inflection at the end of every sentence and with a more understandable accent. This definitely detracts from each of the amazingly educational and historical videos on this site.
The same economic, psychological, and political fabric that lead to this madness is being woven today. And because history has been forgotten from a mere 80 years ago, i am afraid we are doomed to repeat it.

It sickens me when I see that a lot of people being responsible for murders and suffering lived a happy life to the end without standing trial. Or even doctors being involved in the T4 action and poisoningor gassing patients kept their approbation and remained being doctors to their end. One named martin sandberger who was one of the most sadistic lived to 98 in comfort in a state funded nursing home. However believe it or not some germans were against the nazi's and didn't deserve to be nuked.

When I was young I met a lady on a farm I was there with my uncle picking up machine parts she invited us in for a coffee and I noticed a large framed photo on her piano of a SS Rottenfuhrer I discretely inquired about it she said “ Oh that’s my father he was a very cruel man he used to beat me and my siblings mercilessly our life was hell’ I changed the subject as what could I say to that🤷🏻♂️ It stuck in my head though and I wonder sometimes if his actions where a result of what he did in the war or he was just a bad bastard all round.. who knows.

Mind numbing. History has tried to teach an important lesson, but we seem to be predisposed to ignore it. The claim, "I was just following orders." That entreaty is unforgivable on every human level. If history was successful in enabling men en masse to say, "No! I won't do that under any circumstance!" most wars would end immediately and all others would never get a start. How the many follow the few-it is there that humanity has still not learned. It's time we did.
Wars cannot happen if individuals refuse to murder other people on the basis of Nationalism, Racism, Theft of Resources and Religion. Have you not learned that 90% of the human race is either ignorant or stupid or both ? How does a mother raise a child to become a killer or be killed in the process ? Your videos are painstakingly prepared and informative, but some of the commentators nearly always object, often with some justification in my opinion, to the Titles you give to the videos. Surely this video would have been better entitled something like "The Brutal Killings (or Massacres) BY the Einsatzgruppen". From the title you gave it, I thought the video would be about Einsatzgruppen members paying the ultimate penalty for their crimes, during or after the war. In fact, you yourself point out, at the end of the video, how there were almost no executions OF the Einstazgruppen.
They are not executions, but sanctioned murder committed by disgusting animalistic psychopaths.

Often local people joined in with enthusiasm. The murdered Jews left homes, land, livestock and all their possessions which were immediately appropriated. The main bulk of the killing was done by the Germans though

Some of these units were worst than the SS, before reprisals and "executions" the commanders give the possibility of being transferred to other units, without conseguences, so whoever did these...things was a volounteer!(effectively some answered for transfer when knew what they had to do, but a LOT of others remained and did their dirty "job")

Allies were incredibly lenient on these and similar groups the excuse being they didn’t want to upset Germans as the Iron Curtain came down.

While their crimes merited death, it should have taken place after a full on legal trial; once sentence was passed, they should have been given long periods to wait for their end...

It was very difficult to give a thumbs up to this video because of the barbarous nature of the video. But the video was well presented and very factual. On that basis I gave a thumbs up. But God help us when this crime is revisited upon us.

That's something I've never understood. Lots of times the executioners are massively outnumbered, yet the people stand there obediently until being ordered in to the ditch. Wars create a lot of serial killers. Some that might actually have been decent humans under other circumstances. Many soldiers got used to seeing so much death it became a daily chore.

Simply because a vicious group was executed does not make such executions "brutal". You view history via modern eyes, this is a dangerous, revisionist way to look at history. Who was the vicious group that was executed? The Germans invaded a country and started murdering its inhabitants. I guess they have a right to do that in your opinion? What if I found where you are and cut your head off because I don't like the way you look or the way you think or your idealogy? I guess I would be justified in doing that based on your thinking? In a few short years, the Russians pushed into Germany and exacted a measure of revenge, gang raping and then often shooting any young German woman in Prussia they came across. So you agree with that, right? Certainly the Germans proved themselves to be vicious. So the Soviets were just executing a vicous group. If you are an intellectually honest person, have you ever wondered why there has never been a public debate in the mass media about the real and contentious issues of the two WW?
I have done a lot of reading about Germany and the two WW, and I found that the issues are not nearly as one-sided as the mass media would have you believe.
There is one belief that my reading has caused me to formulate:
Whatever one sees/reads/hears in the mass media about Germany and WW I & II, the exact opposite is much closer to the truth.
A final thought: Truth can withstand the most critical inquiry; only lies require draconian laws to prevail. And the imprisonment of 90+ year old grandmothers in Germany, because these would not swallow old war propaganda.
