All I want in the new Barbie movie is one scene in this early CGI style. Just one.
That would be awesome and hilarious
They probably won’t since Mattel doesn’t care about anything except money😂
it took till today to relies that he was talking about THAT babie movie, i thought another animated movie was coming out.
@Miranda Austinrealize*
What they should have done with the new barbie movie 😂
If you do more Barbie movies, I highly suggest Fashion Fairytale!! It's another one that's focused on Barbie herself rather than a character she plays
Ken is such a mess in that movie lmao
@One-One’s Sad Half I felt so bad for him. He was so unlucky in that movie lmao
ohh yhh that movie is so good
@One-One’s Sad Halffr 😭
I know, I love Fashion Fairytale. It's my favourite barbie movie.
My gf, self-proclaimed Barbie ultra fan said to me when I showed her the video, that and I quote ,, This movie is not discussed in the fandom, we are denying its existence since 2006'' and I think this is a good point.
What movie 🤷🏼♀️ there is no such thing as barbie diaries
Indeed!!
I too deny this
it’s literally my favorite barbie movie ever 😭😭😭
How could you possibly skip the "She sounds like a deodorant" line?? Best line in the whole movie.
fr its so iconic
this one line makes me want to watch the movie
"She is fresh, exciting and fun!" "Ugh she sounds like a deodorant" hahaha it is my favourite line ngl.
Honestly, Todd kinda got what was coming since he literally cancelled being Barbie's date to the dance to get back with his ex. So congrats, Kevin. 😅... I've become too emotionally invested in this children's film.
He was definitely using Barbie as a backup. Immediately after they break up (lol again) he goes straight to Barbie so he won’t go to the dance alone
Me tooooo and I have the same opinion lol
Every teen girl was traumatized by Kate calling Lizzie McGuire an Outfit Repeater (TM). We've been numbering our jeans and living in fear ever since.
What the hell? How come? It’s not like bratz got their obsession on jeans.
@arfin jalal I... Don't know what you mean.
Lol
Can we appreciate how Alex’s animation is BETTER then a Mattel Barbie full length film
To be fair to the animators (not the studios tho) the riggers+other artists on these movies were probably paid peanuts and put on insane crunch for a project they may not have been super passionate about. Alex is animating stuff he cares about and probably does work on crunch due to algorithm but has a lot more freedom in his schedule+balancing. Almost like happy animators in good environments make better art. (that sarcasm isn't at you, it's at the industry)
Lol that do be true tho
well, in all fairness, that was from 17 years ago
Yes!😭
Appreciated! 😁👍
The fact that Alex is mostly right about the hair animation bit, the hair was the reason they hired that animation studio, bc In most of the other Barbie movies(esp at the time) the hair did not move at all.
context, Mattel was trying to compete w/ bratz and its series, which was made by a different animation company. So Mattel hired them for the Barbie diaries and made it similar to bratz. So that's why the hair is animated like that.
oooh makes sense, was wondering why the hair suddently looked like Bratz hair instead of pieces of pasta. OH!! And thats probably why they briefly departured from their "fairytale" stories and decided to make a more "teenage high school drama" movie instead!!
Yup, and then they created the myscene dolls which did a little better I think.
I can't believe Alex didn't metion the scene where Barbie goes again to the store and the woman who gifted her the diaty had dissapeared like she didn't even exist. And then they never explain what happened with her... as a kid I was always so mad at that.
Tbh I forgot about her
@Matt and Goji VA’s pastasame
She was fired because she "sells" things for free XD
@SlayerNina lmaooo
The Barbie diaries was my favorite thing to watch as a kid. I used to run home after school everyday to rewatch it. I swear it looked better on my TV in the early 2000s. I wonder where that DVD ended up. 💁🏾♀️ I thought it was the Barbie version of A Cinderella Story with Hillary Duff and Mean Girls. It was the first time I really saw Barbie as the underdog.
The average DVDs back then didn't have the greatest resolution, and neither did most of the TVs themselves. Honestly the fuzziness may have genuinely made it look better by hiding some of the harsher/rougher details and errors.
I swear they all looked better when I first watched them.
I used to be so excited to watch it and then I’d put the dvd in and it’d always be so scratched up and would never work, probably for the better lol
@vocal0idsupermacy_gumimikuIKR . I found my old CD of the Barbie diaries that I use to watch at my grandmas house all the time n I remember being obsessed w it . But now it looks horrible 💀
"Why were you shooting cheerleader practice Kevin?"
This is my favorite Barbie movie And I really wish Alex commented on this scene 😂
Same with “please. She sounds like a deodorant.”
Blame Lizzie McGuire for girls not wanting to repeat clothing. Kate called Lizzie an "outfit repeater" once and I've been self conscious about it ever since
This is honestly one of the funniest movies, it’s just so bizarre lol. The line “just to be clear, I DO wash my clothes” is top tier comedy
and “she smells like a deodorant”
@Channel of T”she’s fun and fresh” “she sounds like a deodorant” i loved that one 😭😭
@smu it's so iconic too 😭😭
It's so dumb. You shouldn't wash your pants after each wear. Like three or four wears minimum.
@barrelracer121495 fr
Barbie movies were my entire childhood, but for YEARS I thought this one movie was just a fever dream. I watched it once at a friend's place, and the only thing I remembered vividly from it was the freaky "CAN I COUNT ON YOU?" scene.
LMAOOO
That scene scared the fuck out of me as a kid idk why.
Omg same about the fever dream part but for me i remembered the magic bracelet and forgot everything else😂
honest to God this movie has more realistic teen dialogue than 99% of live action teen dramas
If you don't do Barbie Rapunzel next, my girlfriend will force me to watch the entire movie. Help Alex, you are my only hope.
omg we want barbie rapunzel and swan lake
gl
nah you're gonna love it
I feel that this is the reason why so many people like Barbie movies, its the pure comedy of them that you just don't get in regular teen movies. The fact that it also suddenly becomes psychological horror all of a sudden 😂😂.
Also, I recommended doing Barbie and the Secret Door (not sure if I'm correct) and Barbie Charm School.
I’m so sad that you didn’t add “please she sounds like a deodorant” line😭. More people should know about this iconic line
This movie singlehandedly caused a raise in diary sales 😂
Oh yah, I literally thought it I write that I like my crush he’ll ask me out. So I needed a diary, specifically one with a key on a bracelet. All because of this movie
If I remember... There was literally a diary that used a bracelet as a key to open. I even think Mattel made it.
You could buy the dvd with a diary that had a lock and key. I found mine not to long ago geez the bad writing in that.
I read dairy sales and was very confused 😂
@Abbi Kazoo ngl... Me too
As a bratz girlie, I didn’t watch the Barbie movies growing up but I must say… this one seems good- like the plot seems like the average teen movie or a dcom that I used to die for.
I must salute you, Alex. You are doing what many cannot and are too afraid to! Thank you for reviewing these Barbie movies.
Barbie Swan Lake is next pliss. The model they used for Raquel in this movie is the same as the evil ballerina in Swan Lake. Also, I'm pretty sure one of Barbie's teachers in this movie is the evil ballerina's dad model as well.
I've never seen Barbie Diaries before, but it looks amazing😂
Also, I would totally recommend the 1994 Thumbelina movie which is just a wild ride. I think we'd all have a lot of fun with it
OMG YESSSSS!!!!!
That was a gem definitely better than Barbie Diaries
I feel like everyone has at least one nostalgic memory of crazily animated Barbie movies 😂
Yes, I barely remember them but the one that stuck with me the most had a big purple dragon named Penelope and I even had a talking toy of the dragon that I was absolutely obsessed with lol
@Just A Random Furrythe rapunzel film?
Yes ❤😂
The only two Barbie movies I remember watching were a fairy’s secret and Pearl princess
Mine is watching Mariposa with my friend on her couch
This was my comfort movie as a teenager lmao. The animation was special even back in 2006 😭
Can we talk about how the animators had a hard time conveying an aroused look on Barbie’s face when she saw the “hot” guy? 😂😂😂
I remember, as someone who grew up on the early barbie movies, being horrified every time they changed the art style
As a kid, I was absolutely enthralled by the hair animation in this movie. Especially in comparison to the other Barbie movies, in which the hair was all one massive stiff blob. I wouldn't listen to anyone who told me the animation was bad. Looking back on in though.... holy shit.
you've got to watch the Barbie Pegasus movie it's so iconic and the main couple actually has great chemistry.
This movie was actually pretty accurate when portraying the pettiness of children. All that was missing was Barbie and Racquel pulling each other's hair and windmill fisting the back of each other's head.
Speaking from experience, there's more shirt pulling than you think.
As an old person, I definitely recommend Barbie and the Rockers: Rockin' Back to Earth (1986). I had this old VHS of it I watched a bunch as a kid and it is a VERY different vibe to all of these cg movies. Also, I feel like you'd enjoy the retro animation. Also also, it appears to be on CZcams in it's entirety.
I know this wasn't supposed to for me but thank you so much for the recommendation.
I had a double bill vhs with Barbie and the Rockers: Out of This World and Barbie and the Sensations: Rockin' Back to Earth and you better believe I played those masterpieces to DEATH.
All the older animation styles looked way better on older box TVs than they do on our HD screens today😂
2:25 To be fair, some 16-year-olds can be sophomores too. But apparently all of Barbie's friends are 16-year-old sophomores who knows how to drive. Either the writers can't do math or I'm just overthinking this direct-to-video Barbie movie! 😂
Kudos to Alex for recapping all of our childhood through his humorous lense because I swear I’m laughing more at these videos than the actual films themselves😂
Dude you gotta watch Barbie as the Island Princess 😂 its got it all; sun, sand, and soap opera level amnesia. Plus a Dr.Dolittle angle that can’t be beat
i honestly thought you would comment on that "... exciting, fresh and fun" "she sounds like a deodorant" line because honestly it is literally the most iconic thing to come out of this movie
FRRR😭😭
that line would go down generations coz I quote it all the time 😭
Yes, but additionally, “Just to set the record straight, I DO wash my clothes!”
I quote this movie with relative frequency, and it’s always a travesty that no one ever knows what I’m talking about.
Rightt
I remember watching this when I was a teen and I loved it SO MUCH. I don't even remember the CGI being this bad 😂 It makes me feel old 😐
One of my favourite things about this movie is that Todd was totally supposed to look like Chad Micheal Murray and if they ever did a live action remake, I'd expect no one else 😂 Also I can't believe the amount of pink sleeveless dresses I'm seeing atm because I immediately think it's The Dress™
i can't lie this is genuinely one of my favourite barbie movies. the humour in this film is everthing to me. dont even get me started on the bloopers.
i watched this movie for the first time this year as a 25 year old so i don’t have any nostalgia attached to it and i know the animation style is weird but out of all the barbie movies, this one is seriously so underrated, it gives such a classic tween movie vibe and it’s just fun!!!
This movie is so iconic. I really wish they'd do a reboot and keep the story and script exactly the same.
In my opinion Kevin was one of the creepiest potential love interests in the Barbie franchise
Exactly Sam, it's a super simp male.
Right there with the sexist baloon prince guy
Who?
@Harmony Funtime they guy from Barbie and the three musketeers
@Shinobi Prince He was an early textbook definition of a simp or being friendzoned.
Another Barbie move that really departs from the Barbie formula is the MyScene film Jammin in Jamaica. It technically stars Barbie but the frankly large cast of side characters have a prominent role in the film. It’s so chaotic, drama fueled, has some incredible original songs. Plus it’s more “mature” since it comes from the MyScene franchise. It’s also in 2D so it’s a different style
My standards for movie reviews are too high thanks to Alex
Also Alex if you see this PLEAS book into watch miss peregrine's home for peculiar children its by tim burton and it traumatised me as a child :)
After the barbie series ofc (do the fairytopia series next)
The "Can I count on you" scene lives rent free in my mind to this day despite having not seen this movie since I was a kid
You've awoken a lost childhood memory Alex. I forgot this movie existed until now.
This might not be the most decent Barbie movie, but the soundtrack of this movie was my favorite! ❤
The CGI animation in most the Barbie movies always fall into the uncanny valley category, but even if the animation doesn't hold up now, it still has some charm to it.
I still never forget that moaning Weasel in _Barbie as Rapunzel._
totally should do the rapunzel one
I have said "Vilaowge" ever since 😂😂😂
Balls (iykyk)
@Barbara Robertsthe only kurtis video i like apart from the Goat story 😂
Omg and the monkey and the dogs from diamond castle
I love how as a kid these were like top tier graphics to us 😂😂😂
Whoever pressed the thumbs down button was laughing too hard from Alex’s jokes 😂😂
Barbie of Swan Lake is brilliant- from what I remember watching years ago 😅 and one of the characters is voiced by Janice from Friends so extra points
I never had barbies as a kid nor watched anything barbie, and same goes for allot of other movies and shows kids my age watched while growing up because my parents did’nt let us watch tv. So I’m basically just catching up on childhood here:)
This movie also gets the price for *creepiest male lead* in the entire Barbie cinematic universe
Barbie Magic of the Pegasus is so much fun plot wise. And it's one of the few movies that give Barbie's love interest a backstory.
no bc Aiden is actually one of the very few Kens that has a believable personality. like, the boy has a whole arch which we don't see too often
@KHGSMel exactly! He was a whole complex character. They made him more than just "handsome" to Barbie, and I appreciated that.
I better see a barbie pegasus review soon, man. I was polite before but now😡😡😂😂
I remember watching this in 3D
Is it weird that I want to make a Dungeons and Dragons campaign based on this movie?
I personally think it would be really cool for Alex to watch Barbie magic Pegasus. Honestly my goals as a sophomore in highschool were almost the same thing that Barbie had in the movie. And it's kinda weird how close u can actually relate to it than most Barbie movies.
I literally give you the HIGHEST Respect for watching more than 5 minutes of this I know some kids movies are like this but even the worst games aren't as hard to watch
8:28 I totally loved your animation there! It was spot on! 😂😂
I used to LOVE this movie when I was a kid. Actually, I used to love every single Barbie movie out there. It's just my whole childhood.
Honestly, Barbie: A Fairy Secret is the best one, of all of them.
Ken actually has a personality and is responsible for a humor that, for me, still holds up, I actually laugh out loud at some of the jokes. The movie is not just about Barbie, it has an interesting plot and Raquelle really experiences some growth and has the opportunity to show her personality, also her frenemies relationship with Barbie is really cute and funny, good for teaching kids. I just love it.
[And the fact that it’s a direct sequence from the iconic A Fashion Fairytale and you can it in the details 🤌🏻]
Just a quick reminder or note.
Barbie herself is an actress and ‘the twelve dancing princesses’, ‘princess and the pauper’ or any other movies she isn’t named ‘Barbie’ are movies she plays in. Then there are Barbie movies like ‘A fashion Fairytale’ or ‘A perfect Christmas’ are about her private life as Barbie. ‘The Barbie diaries’ counts to this as well.
I love Alex’s reaction to the barbie movies because he doesn’t have the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia like the rest of us. It makes me realize just how ridiculous the movies really are lol
this one wasn’t even ridiculous lol it’s perfect for the target audience, i love alex but it’s exactly what i would expect from an adult man reacting to a stereotypical tween movie
@Yes, I like bananas. So?Not ridiculous? The romance subplot is nothing but cringe. She goes for the guy that goes crawling back to the gall that dumped him, the moment she looks at him TWICE and then there is Kevin. In any other movie that guy would be the creep of the show. Teen me hated him the moment I realized what his deal was.
Excellent video, as always!! You need to do either Barbie Nutcracker or Barbie of Swan Lake :) Even though I’m 32, I always watch them at Christmas time, they’re so nostalgic for me!
Alex Meyers, your videos are hilarious and your animation is amazing. I've only been watching your channel for a few months and I wish I had started watching earlier. I truly love your work.
It's been a long long time since I've seen any Barbie movies. There were some of their movies I liked as a kid, but the one I loved the most was The Mermaid Tale 1 & 2. You should definitely watch them next.
I love how Alex will find something funny and then make everyone else laugh by laughing.
first of all, loved the review of this one! it definitely hit the notes of the early 2000s drama teen movies, but without all the other quirks like in mean girls. magic of pegasus is still on my list (BEST enemies to lovers with an interesting villain!)
Barbie as Rapunzel, in Swan Lake, in The Nutcracker, and The Magic of Pegasus were the only ones I watched as a kid and I loved them all (so was Princess and the Pauper, but that one's been covered already). If you could eventually talk about any of those I would absolutely love it! I haven't seen them in years...
I like how Alex said ‘your eyeshadow doesn’t even match your skin’ like eyeshadow is made to blend perfectly into your tone and look like you’re not wearing any at all 😂
He’s a little confused but he’s got the spirit😂
I think he meant this hue of eyeshadow is a bad match for that skin color.
no her shade is autumn but she's wearing summer shades lol i hope that helps
like how in mean girls the main girl wears autumn shades but starts wearing a very ugly shade of pink that doesnt suit her skin as she becomes a mean girl
Ooh ok that does make sense lol I thought he meant it actually doesn’t match her skin, like literally. I was like ‘wouldn’t it be invisible then?’ 😂
Remembering that I own 2 copies of each Barbie movie because I watched them so much growing up that the DVD died and had to get another one is so 😭and now having Alex watch them as an adult who did not grow up on them is top-tier content for me. I am making my roommate watch Alex's video since I can't get her to watch the actual movies lol.
I had this movie on dvd and I was so in love with it. It is hands down, my favourite Barbie movie ever!
I think they spent so much of the run time dedicated to that diary because there was a product tie in, so that YOU TOO could own the magic diary and make all of your dreams come true!
I am soo happy Alex actually took the time out to watch this movie 🤣🤣. It's a gas. I loved it when I was little but I always wondered why the animation had to be like that. The songs were fire tho. I vote Barbie Magic of Pegasus next!
4:00 I always find it so weird how all the popular girls (or kids in general) are always so mean in movies. In my school the mean kids were usually the ones that wound up getting excluded from everything and the popular ones were the ones that were the most sociable, charming, charismatic and nice.
This looks way more like a video game than an animated movie.
There is a game of it actually
Video games know their limits.
Funnily enough..i played the game. Its one of my favourites when i was a kid
@LazyBunnyLynwhat genre is it?
I never even saw the movie as a kid but I just wanted a diary because I saw the trailer on a different Barbie movie 🤣
Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus is one of the Barbie movies that just lives in my head rent free, can’t wait to see the reaction to that
I really love the cheesy romance storyline with Barbie and Kevin 😂 oh and the watching movies in alphabetical order with the alphabetical foods 😂🩷🥹
But definitely a classic high school movie in my opinion or maybe that’s just cause I loved this movie 😂
Barbie Diaries, the 12 Dancing Princesses and the Barbie in a Christmas Carol 🩷
The sad thing is how many times I watched this movie when I was a kid. I LOVED it. I have no idea why.
I love these barbie movies. ive never heard a guy cover them. thats so awesome. thanks for this! please consider doing barbie island princess if you have not already. i know you would enjoy it. LOL.
Hilarious as always. My vote for next Barbie movie would probably be Swan Lake or Nutcracker! I was a ballet kid, so those two were definitely the ones I watched the most. Not sure if it's impressive or sad that my best friend and I knew every single step to every single dance in both movies...
I feel like this doesn't get said enough, i ABSOLUTELY LOVE the way Alex animates. It's so bouncy and kinda like a mix of how animes are animated and cartoons. I love the contrast between extremely dynamic poses and the simple little blob that is his character. I also love the exaggerated expressions. TLDR : i love the way alex animates
Right ❤️
In my high school, the popular girls were pretty friendly, for the most part. And they were honor students. I was that kid that was friends with everyone and helped everyone with their homework. It was honestly the popular boys that were the problem children.
17:31 Barbie movies with actual decent messages - go check out ‘Barbie: A Fairy Secret’ which actually deals with looking beyond the surface at a person & their actions & how to communicate better.
Also good is ‘Barbie: Mariposa & the Fairy Princess’ which actually demonstrates the good guy characters reflecting on past actions, their consequences & what they should’ve done differently.
I absolutely love your content. You always make me laugh. Whether I've seen the film or not, I enjoy hearing your thoughts
The huge switch in animation style is because this was done by a different studio. Most of the other movies were done by Mainframe Studios, the studio that animated Reboot, Beast Wars, and Shadow Raiders, among other things. This movie was made by Curious Pictures, a now closed animation studio that did a bunch of things I've never heard of and also Codename: Kids Next Door.
When he said “Alright ladies, when do we murder Todd?”, I almost died laughing because I had high hopes for Alex’s Barbie solidarity and he carried it through into “girl support solidarity”.
The Barbie movies always had the craziest animation styles, really glad animation has came a long way, cause man was this animation something
Ok this is like veggie tales graphics
It’s Mo-Cap, but unlike say the Polar Express, which is expensive to make, it’s on a Mattel budget, aka, pocket change.
You could do all these Barbie movies for years and I would watch them all 😊❤
i love this movie so so much! i used to watch it everyday as a child it’s like mean girls meet clueless and every other 2000‘s teen rom com and the soundtrack is a masterpiece 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This is one of my favorite channels 😍
Barbie (Bratz too) movies are totally and completely INSANE, no wonder we gens Y & Z grew up so weird
barbie island princess is a must watch - the story lines AND songs go hard actually
Gotta respect that Alex sat down to actually watch this movie
Right? This is the most what-adult-would-deliberately-watch-this-on-his-own thing I've seen in his roster😅😂
I watch it sometimes. Just reeks of that Bratz killing Barbie pettiness Mattel had.
ALLEGEDLY GROWN MAN WATCHING A KIDS SHOWWWW
@Brae N Eric hux💞 Honestly, there are many men (including me) who watch kid shows. I think people assume you lose interest in things, because of your age. But Disney Adult definitely prove cartoons definitely still resonate with adults. And don’t get me started on adult doll/toy collectors (Kidults as industry likes to call us; we hate it) made up $9 Billion during the past couple years for these toy companies.
You should definitely check out barbie: a fairy secret, barbie: a mermaid tale or barbie fairytopia. I can’t describe the chokehold they had on us back then
I never watched Barbies Diaries, but based on this video, it feels like how Mean Girls would have turned out if it was made by Mattel lol
Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus was my favorite when I was little. Our DVD had scratches in it so I don’t actually remember how it ends. I’d love to see you do it!
2:40 that’s why I always buy clothes I know I can and will wear a million times! And the bonus is that whenever you DO get something new, you get compliments on how cute it is
I remember i used to love this movie but when I saw it recently again I was really shocked by the animation. But yes the story was actually good, a little different from the typical princess trope
The reaction to "no girl hug for Kevin?" had me laughing way more than I like to admit
For the next barbies movie I have two suggestions: - Barbie and the magic castle, Barbie and her sisters in a pony tale. These two were movies that I was obsessed with as a child, so I'm curious to see your reaction.
15:43 had me laughing a lot
“How did this happen?” There was a doll for each movie, it was during Blockbuster era so meaning the movies were accessible, and they were different stories than the usual princess ones
Barbie movies/shows are to be seen and experienced. That's all I'm going to say.
