Boogie goes CHONK, Soldano goes THRAK
"CHONK" sounds easier on the ears where as "THRAK" sounds like it could get uncomfortable.
I have three marks and two soldanos, sometimes I can be happy playing three chords for an hour just enjoying the gain textures
Got myself a Mark IV and I've been appreciating the fine details more and more over time. Not fizzy or harsh. Fat, clear, chunky.
Soldano = John Belushi, Mark IV = Bill Murray, so not a ridiculous analogy at all! Mark IV for me! One of the greatest purchases I ever made. Which is great, because I definitely prefer Bill Murray too!
4 months later and still loving both amps equally. Best of the best for a reason.
Possibly the greatest analogy in comparing and contrasting 2amps I’ve ever heard and it’s such a tits analysis that I understand even the unmentioned subtleties about these 2 Party Monsters!
Storytime!
I guess I was 16 and only been playing a year when Metallica's MOP came out. Loved the tone immediately, a year later heard the 87 Whitesanke album, same feeling. That's when I knew it was the amp for me. Fast forward to 89...I drove to Reliable Music (rip) in Charlotte (boogie dealer and great store). I tested the MKIIC+ and MKIII side by side for hours. I loved them both but the MkIII was Simul-Class and the C+ was the standard 60 watter. I really wanted the Coliseum model but big Al (my amp dealer) said they would have to special order it and would take some time. I wasn't going home empty handed so we packed up the MKIII and the matching metal grill Boogie halfback 4x12. The rest they say, is history.
11:57 wow i love that tone
I've had a Soldano HR50, and currently have a Mark V. 8:25 is the best characterization of Mark tone vs Soldano ever!
Like for the High Gain!
All the gain!
@@LeonTodd great video, I have an x100b somewhere between the two. More like the boogie I feel. At first I hated it, but now I like the dial in power
Soldano, Mesa...you got my attention! Love these amps in your collection. Mixing these guys, bliss! Would love to get a Mark V or SLO30 to pair with my Suhr RL. For now, I try to get the character from my FM3 as close I can. Your videos have helped me dial in some great tones! Great video! 👍
The FM3 is so close it's not even funny. Fun trick - set the input EQ in the amp block to 250hz with the Mark series models for even more tightness on the FM3
Get the Mark V. Way more versatile. Euge does a video where he compares the 2. The Mark can SLO but not the other way around.
I've got the Mark IV-A 1x12" combo. I'll pass it on in my will. These amps have so many different voices and can be used for any genre. Once you learn how to dial it in it's glorious.
Glorious indeed!
The Boogie sounds more focused in the upper mids. The Soldano is one of my favorite amps but the bloom on lower notes on the Boogie is somewhat magical also the type of feedback due to the different harmonic frequencies. Different topology, one more Marshall and one is "just" Boogie, very unique. Love both amps.
I'm currently running an ADAMP1 stock with an Alesis quadraverb powered by Carvin Fet 450 and Carvin Pro Bass 500 when playing drop tunings to 2x12" 300 watts each custom-built one-of-a-kind maple cabs. It's glorious I must say ;)
Man, that Soldano makes me go back to the 80s. Both sound great. Love it.
Been busy helping my parents and trying to catch up on your vids sir.
Got a Mark IV this year and it was one of the best pieces of gear I've ever purchased. My only complaint about it is that the fan is a bit noisy, but once you start playing it you usually don't notice. The tones it makes are really second to none. The clean is amazing, the high gain is sexy as hell, giving you a crazy amount of control of the sound. It replaced a triple recto which I do like but it was just never tight enough for my liking, even when boosted,, and while the recto is a good amp, the Mark IV is just in another league, in my opinion.
Great video as always! I am a proud owner of an early Soldano Hot Rod 50 and love it! Great coffee book as well in the background...
Awesome video!
I’ve got a mark iv widebody combo that’s about 80 lbs. I just picked up a little five 25 combo that’s only 24 lbs to take to jam sessions and small gigs. Very portable and quite loud
Love the Soldano!
Thiiiiiicc
This video is splendid. My mk 4 combo does glorious high gain punk on the lead channel with a telecaster. You have to stand nicely away with the single coil pickups but I rather like it that way. You play proper tasty and gave us a real trip into a pair of battle ready warriors. 😊❤️
Mornin' Leon! Nice tones, Fine Playing! Ol' blue's softie at heart!
Thanks for being there! Well done!
Be Well All!
As always, thanks so much brother
nice analogy, and fantastic sounding amps, I bet in person the sound must be glorious.
mark IV all the way!!! having one, i may b a bit biased...great content leon!!!
You were right on the money when you said each amp does it's own thing, and they both do them very well!
Personally, I would lean more towards the Soldano just because I like the way it seems to have some harmonic overtones in the background, whereas the Mesa seems to have less of that and sounds a bit more focused. That's just my opinion
I remember a long time ago at a guitar show, trying a Groove Tubes Trio preamp through the power amp of that same Soldano model and I was blown away, and then I tried the ADA MP-1 Classic after that, and was equally blown away. That was what convinced me to get the ADA. The trouble is, I've never quite gotten that same tone quality since then. That just proves that the Soldano power amp section plays a major part in the overall tone of the amp.
Good one Leon!
On point-Soldano has that richness that other amps just don't have.........
Don’t sell yourself short. That was the most telling analogy on tone covering for a medium which otherwise can’t accurately convey. I understood exactly what you meant even if my ears didn’t. Please, have another coffee. Cheers.
I am lucky enough to own a mark iv... it has such a cool pumping low end thing going on that is so fun. It’s a lifer for me too!
I own a tc-50 as well and the mark iv really makes me realize how much low end they really did trim off the tc-50... I’m not sure I like that... they also did it with the new bad lander.
Yeah the control you have with the Mark's is second to none
Love the analogy at 9 minutes. :)
Agggggg!!! Killer tones. Soldano is my jam, but that Mesa is SWEET. Nice.
Funnily enough the Cornfed model in the Axe-Fx sounds the most like the hot rod 50 - the SLO power amp has a slightly different thing going on to my ears
Soldano is simply essential, minimal! truly rock!
You are one of the very few CZcamsrs deservings all these gear. Cheers.
never had a soldano, always used marshals for that sound, but they sound great, also have had mesa stuff for a very long time, love it, my favorite power amp i use now is a 2:90 .. love the 6l6s, had a 2c+ ,.. i think the mark4 looks great, keep up the good work Leon!
Don't forget the MkIII. Brilliant video - as always - lover the Rate :-) Smokin!
@LeonTodd Two things.....
1. Thanks for another great video to wake up to and I'll take both amps!!!
2. I asked Nuno Bettencourt how he got that unique tone on the song "Stop The World" and believe it or not while still using our beloved ADA MP-1 he told me he used a Soldano.
For you, I would like to keep a spectral analyzer off to the side so I can see your waveform and frequency ranges. And your tones always sound so good, I feel like I should send my Mesa gear off for repair. There must be something wrong with them. 😜
That would look super cool as well. Hrmmm....might have to screen cap Pro-Q3 and lay it over future vids
I saw the title, I pressed like button, I prepared for the video expecting some cool tones out of that beasts and then I hit play and you hit me like a hammer with that Hamer...and with those Ratt riffs...you got me!!
Non negotiable with the Ratt riffs man!
pretty good analogy, I understood perfectly
I hope someday you get a FRYETTE deliverance 120. You'll be in heaven. Lol. They are monsters. It'd be a nice addition to these two amps here
Oh and your analogy is spot on!! 😊
Awesome honest comparison...both Titan Tone Monsters!! I have a Soldano Hot50+ and a Hughes TriAmp ..would love to have that Boogie too lol. ....Also Helps to be an awesome guitar player like Leon.
Sounds good Leon! Love the blues beginning! Rock on!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
So happy I found a MK IV the other day. I had a SLO30 at home for a few days but it can't do the chug.
Thanks for this LT! Like em both but prefer the boogie. You make all amps sound great. Rock on brother!
Great amps, I have a Slo 30 and the Mesa studio pre and the quad. All are fantastic. Each has is own unique vibe. Like a lot of us my amp collection is out of control at the moment. At home I tend to use the Axefx III a lot. I am really looking forward to live gigs again. At home I run the amps through the UA ox. Man we live in a glorious time for gear. Great comparison of two great amps.
You could always put an equalizer in front of the Soldano along with other coloring tone pedals
Really goes in depth with the personality analysis lmao... It works.
I love the analogies!!! 😁😁
Came here for the boogie, stayed for the Soldano! Great amp and great tones man! Cheers.
The Soldano is a beast hey!
Love both of these amps. I’m definitely not trashing the soldano. It sounded great and I know they are great. But I do feel like it sorta sounded standard. Like I think you could get all of those tones for a lot less money with like an Orange or something. The boogie however had its own voice and many other voices that it could do. Just didn’t seem like the soldano could do different. Like it sounded great. But the boogie sounded unique.
Nice video! I have a Mark IV too, I think I sent you a pic once. I see everyone uses the "pull fat" control pulled, but don't underestimate pushing it, together with lead voicing set to mid gain, for crunchier and more defined tone, specially when downtuning. I pull the pull fat for soloing, I wish there was a switch just for that in the footswitch haha
Yeah pull fat for lead, pushed for rhythm is you I usually run it. Do the same thing on my Axe-Fx but with the added bonus of being able to switch them live.
I'd love to run this both toghether! damn i love these
Soldano tones 😗😗 amazing
Am really surprised at how Marshally the Boogie sounded👍
It really can do so much
The pentode and triode switch, harmonics and mid gain switches on the back make it head in Marshall and soldano territory if needed. The amp really is a chameleon
I just bought a mint rev B short head mark iv, thanks in no small part to this video.
Congrats!
Great tones and playing, I want an SLO 100,but they're pricey,so I decided to go with the new rectifier,"Badlander"amp.Should get it next month.
I loved the analogy :D
I never really played either of these amps. I once tried an SLO100 in a guitar store, but the store manager came running way before I got it to a good level.
Turning it up past 3 probably causes a public health risk :p
@@LeonTodd true 🤘🤘🤘🤘
4:14 Oh man Tease me some more, Please!
You should do a Mark IV Rev A vs Rev B, you'll be surprised how different they sound.
Leon, always love your videos and playing. You always say the mkiv is more Metallica but have you listened to the tones Alan Murphy got out of the mk series (yes I also know he used a fender sc), or your own Frank Gambale and Brad Gillis' lead tone... pure strawberries and cream!! 😉
Had a couple of mkivs for years.... amazing amps as you say.
You need to get an Axess Electronics CFX4 for total midi flexibility.. if you can find one.
Nice tones Leon! I have a Soldano SP77 which Mike says is basically a Hot Rod 50... and also have a Triaxis which used in Lead 2 yellow mode gets me pretty close to the MkIV tone. Great video man.
Didn't know the SP77 specifically set out to do the Triaxis/IIC+ lead. GAS intensifies....
Lol I meant I have a Triaxis as well as a SP77 ;)
@@jazz_grooves aaaaah I got you! In that case, that's a GLORIOUS rig.
@@LeonTodd best of both worlds :)
Recently had a Mark IIB+ combo for a couple weeks. It left very soon so I could get my hands on a very interesting variant of the 2013 twin-channel OR100... Which sounds great next to my buddy’s SLO100. :P
I get it......
Great analogy- I’ve owned a mark v 25 twice now and always end up selling it- too hard to dial in different tones for me at least. I like plexi style amps because you almost can’t make them sound bad if you try. How hard is the hr50 to dial in and from your video it sounds a little more Marshally than the slo100?
Warren Haynes. SLO 100 with a Diaz. Buttery tone.
What's in your coffee lol 😆.
The Boogie is like a Fender with lots of overdrive. The Soldano is like full on ROCK sounds kicking butt and taking name. Lol 😆
Lol, a big fat guy coming late to a party lol your killing me man.
I once had a SLO 100... I really loved the crunch sounds but never been able to dial a good high gain sound to my taste. There was always some kind of "bees" in the high I cannot remove... My cab at the time was half V30/Greenback, maybe because of the GB. But never had this problem with my Bogner...
You need to crank the amp
Great video. Do you have a video that dives Deep into all the Mark IV’s tonal capabilities, and settings?
Got one planned!
Nice amp stand.
I have an HR50 from the 1990s, my fave amp, was a marshall guy for many years before I switched to the Soldano. The Soldano is more versatile and more articulate than the marshalls
Everything you like about a Marshall, nothing you don't
@@LeonTodd yes! I had an '81 vertical inputs JCM 800 with 6550s, a hot rodded ( if you can believe ) '87 Silver Jubilee, and the vintage modern ( all 50 watt ), all different, but HR50 reigns supreme! Love watching your videos
I'm down to 2 amps a Ceriatone leviathan and a mark iv. I'm pretty happy with only those 2
Killer combo!!!
Anyone feel sorry for the Marshall amp stand? Did I hear some Fastway in there? Love the Hamer, more of that!
Hahaha yeah the poor DSL, always propping everything up
Sei gagliardissimo🎸
I still think the hot rod plus are better than the slo. Mark iv is the best mark IMO. Reason why it’s my number one
*whispers* me too
Great comparison. I always see the Mesa pre distortion tone stack the same as an external boost pedal with TMB controls. You control which frequency will distort and then compensate this with the post distortion multi band eq. What's funny is that in amp modeling, the same principle is used to model different amps or pedals: a pre filter and gain, a distortion generator and a post filter (+cab IR). The Mark series is like an analog "modeler" as it allows to control nearly everything !
Exactly, that's a great way to think of it
Absolutely gorgeous Hamer Explorer! Id love to know what pickups you have in it. Fantastic tone.
Duncan Jazz in the neck and "EVH" in the bridge
Any chance of it being for sale?
I sold my Mark IV shortly after getting the AF3
Owned a Mark IV years back. Just got an FM3 and I'm just BLOWN away at how accurate it is. It feels like I'm playing my old amp and all the knobs react accordingly.
Much prefer the Soldano sound.
Awesome Tone! I'm at a crossroad.......do I buy a SLO30 or a Mesa? Any suggestions?
What tones and how many do you want on tap?
@@LeonTodd I'm a Blues/Power Rock genre type of player. I haven't played professionally in a long time. However, I still write and need flexibility with various tones. Any advice?
@@guitarziz3994 I'd lean towards the Mesa - once you "get" the whole tonestack - distortion - geq structure you can dial in whatever you like
@@LeonTodd Well Sir, I have an older 2 channel Daul Rec like yours. Love the BEAST! Great amp for the arsenal. Thank You for your advice. Maybe I'll see you at the Dallas International Guitar Show, if they continue with the posted schedule 🎼🎵🎶👍
Are Gibson flagging videos with headstock logos visible?!
🍻
Hello! Great video! What riff is at the end on 16:13?
Ratt - Lay it down
Nice what’s that switcher you’re using?
Radial headbone
It makes me sad that these amps aren't mine :(
2 monsters
Alien v Predator but good
Yo. Curious if you’ve okayed Headfirst amps, especially since they’re in your neck of the woods?
Not ye. I've got some homework!
Soldanos dont need to do the boogie thing
Lol imagination was qiet wild ha ha insane anology
Glorious tones indeed!!! 🤘 If anyone is interested in jamming over the blues backing track Leon is soloing over in the intro, check it out here: czcams.com/video/Qa0H2DvDz5w/video.html
The more gear I get, the more I realize that the amp itself doesn't matter to a point. Are you going to play metal on a Princeton Reverb? No that's stupid. But, can you get a kick ass metal sound out of a Marshall, Boogie, Soldano, etc.. Yea. Can A Marshall, Boogie, Soldano do punk.. sure. Classic Rock.. sure. Cleans and Jazzy stuff.. Yea but not as nice as a Princeton Reverb though. I've been thinking about selling off a bunch of amps because while they have differences, they are minute when you are playing with other instruments.
Sounds like you miss people with that analogy...
WHY all the Soldano hate...they are not Mark IV but they have their own thing (and it is NOT RECTO>>>IT IS BETTER)..they are not Friedman either. I own a Mark IVB so i am in the Mark camp, but if I had to choose another amp it WOULD BE SOLDANO!!!..just because it is unique and as good as the Mark!!(and like i said..better than a Recto in MY opinion) (and I do have a right to MY opinion)..lets be honest about the sounds...the Soldano CHUGS PROPER, it is not thrak...THE MESA goes KUNK..a harsher more percussive and LESS BASS DRIVEN SOUND..if you want a proper bass chug..SOLDANO..if you want the Mesa KUNK>>>MARK IVB.
Great amps.. I prefer the uberschall over these two..
Is it just me or is he balancing the amps on top of a Marshall head?
😮whoa, yeah it seems like so 😂😅
can't stand the slo tone it's bland . Mesa has very cool tone
