The Madness of Mankind | Space Runaway Ideon

  • Out of every single piece of media I’ve seen in my life, none have ever made me feel so hopeless and worried about the future of humanity itself, than Space Runaway Ideon. In Yoshiyuki Tomino’s darkest work of all time, he makes it very clear to all of us that there is an inherent mistake that dooms humanity to wipe each other out over and over again. In this video I take a look at the series that makes me think more about life itself than no other series or film ever has.

    Being a mother I really resonated with the message of Ideon. I was the victim of so many dark things, and yet having kids of my own is my chance to contribute to a better future, foster my own contribution to a better generation and prevent them from making the mistakes I made and mistakes that the people around me have made in the past. The next generation always has that chance to make things right.

    The ending is one of the saddest endings I’ve seen, like I still cry from seeing it, especially when it shows the children’s spirits

  • @TKUltra971
    @TKUltra971 Před 2 měsíci +9

    The ending is somewhat key notes from Char's Counter Attack. Its pretentious because it doesn't doesn't matter if you understood it or not or what they've learned: they are all dead. As the story implied, this isn't the first time a large scale war over the mcguffin occurred and they failed to learn what THAT generation had to teach with their own deaths. I kinda chuckled when first seeing it. Its like in Star Wars when a Jedi or Sith dies they suddenly gain massive wisdom and power that matters little because they are in the dirt. (Or space dust in this case).

    You've made me want to have a re-watch of Ideon with this. My first time going through 'Be Invoked' I found the ending to be surprisingly upbeat (probably because I'd watched Devilman Crybaby around the same time), but you raise some damn good points here. "Maybe things will be better next time (if we don't cock it up)" is hardly a cheerful note to close on, after all.

    He finally did it! I was looking forward to video and so happy you did such a great job on it. I also felt an immense amount of dread during and after “Be Invoked” and remember trying to go to bed afterwards but literally couldn’t because of how much it was stuck in my mind. I think the most terrifying part of the show is not so much the fact that everyone died at the end(I knew everyone would die before I started) but as the story progresses more and more, the more the tragedy became inevitable. It’s that inevitably that scares me so much because despite all the characters acting on their own free will and having the ability to change their actions, they all make decisions that lead to destruction. In this story, everyone, including the heroes, is responsible for the tragedy which I think is a vital lesson everyone needs to know. Instead of blaming our suffering and the worlds problems on the actions of bad people, let’s acknowledge how we are all responsible for the evil in this world and then maybe we can start to get somewhere
    Ideon is a very special work to me because it is the very first Tomino production I’ve ever saw and it’s had the biggest impression on me besides 0079. I never really was into Gundam before before and the only reason I watched it was because people were comparing it to Evangelion which I was obsessed with at the time. Ideon then lead me to 0079 and soon enough Tomino had become my favorite anime director, Miyazaki and Anno being close seconds.
    I’d be interested in hearing what you have to say Tomino’s other non Gundam titles from the 80s.

      We had the same experience, I couldn't sleep that night, it's such a powerful ending and nothing really compares to it. You can watch a million things and there's nothing that gets close to what it feels to consume this show for the first time!

    Story of M.A.D with no punches being held back. There is the one part in ideon where the ideon teleports karla to her father, as if it was trying to show they can co-exist a last ditch effort to get both side to understand before fully giving up and ending it all

    If anything, the impression I get from a lot of Tomino's works is "old people with power suck", and I'm inclined to agree.
    I say this as a middle-aged person - people past middle age shouldn't be allowed to have political power. They can provide advice to younger decision-makers based on their experiences, but they shouldn't be the ones making the final decisions. They are all too often too deeply set in their ways to learn from their mistakes...and that's doubly so when their power shields them from consequences.

    The reason why war will always be a thing is because human beings harbor an insatiable desire to belong. To belong means to be important, accepted and relevant. That last being our grappling with mortality against the infinite and unknown. It sounds like a harmless need, but it manifests in humans in the idea that it is impossible to belong if we all belong. Think of it like a sports team. No one walks around with a shirt that says “I love the NFL” they walk around a shirt that says “go New York giants.” See, if everyone played on the same sports team, there would be no “us” to unite against “them”. Therefore, the absence of an opponent in “them” means there can exist no team. People have nothing to rally around if there is no one to oppose them. And if they can’t do that, they won’t feel like a part of anything. They don’t belong. Add to that the fact that governments, especially conservative governments, want their populations to be ultra patriot nationalists. Conservatives believe the world is out to get them, and add that to a government movement of raising children on a pledge of allegiance before they’ve seen the world, and you’ve got generations of humans who are bred to believe they can only belong among their own kind. At the end of the day humanity will destroy itself because so many people don’t understand that everyone can win, and instead grow up with the idea that the only for me to win, the only way for me to belong and the only way that is right, is if you lose, you are the enemy and you are wrong.

      @@YaboitheCadian It's not a bias. Liberals don't stack gun piles. Liberals don't lobby to punish people that are different. Liberals done make laws that police people's bodies. Liberals want peace and put people before money. If you think I'm delusional, give me ANY conservative regime in the modern era and I'll show you where they pass laws to persecute people different form them. If you think Conservatives aren't the problem, you're the one who is delusional. Liberals WANT to get along with everyone. Conservatives just want to hate those different form them. the proof is in the LGBTQ community, women, the poor or just a different religion.

    Nobody wanted to hear you ramble on about how you think Tomino’s stories are about this woke idea about the young generation. His stories were always about how war is bad, simple enough for someone like you to understand given on your other analysis videos, but you just don’t. And this ending wasn’t even hopeless or full of despair like you made it out to be. Ideon is probably Tomino’s most hopeful ending out of all of them, even Turn A. Everyone dying and failing to connect is besides the point. They’re dead, but happy. It’s so easy to understand. It’s people like you that try and romanticize everything you watch that actually don’t understand anything. Since your next video is obviously a Turn A one, I don’t see how you’ll be able to prove that it’s a brighter one since you clearly misunderstood Ideon’s simple message. War is bad, that’s it. I encourage those who read this and disagree with me to watch the movie again, it’s not as deep as this guy makes it out to be.

    • @CheemsBased
      @CheemsBased  Před 6 měsíci +17

      I can understand if you didn't like the video, but I want to be clear that I don't think anyone's own interpretations of the ending is invalid to my own. I make it apparent in the video that I think because of what has happened in the story, that it was mankind's own folly that caused them to end up like that, even when taking into account of them all reuniting in the end. Again, it's just how I feel, and I'm not going to judge anyone who says a story like Ideon isn't as deep as I made it out to be, but there's a reason why this story along with other stories like Ideon have left a mark on so many people.

    • @noble6v
      @noble6v Před 6 měsíci +14

      @@ZenithXevoThat’s a very surface level analysis of Tomino works, regardless of genre. It doesn’t matter about genre, it’s about making interpretation and analysis on a piece of media that you’re invested in. “War is Hell” is one of many common themes in most of his works but it’s not the main theme for all of his works. For example, Turn A Gundam is about the importance of understanding, not repeating the same past mistakes, moving forward, accepting and learning from the past. The anime heavily criticizes jingoism, hatred, bigotry and the fetishization of war, being the main catalysts that started Dark History (all of UC, CC, and AU). Don’t misuse the word “woke” to discredit someone’s interpretation, it comes as childish and rude.
