  • Bigger does not necessarily mean better, and quantity is no substitute for quality.
If you ever needed proof of the veracity of those two statements, you need look no further than Bethesda Game Studio’s latest sci-fi release, Starfield.
While I enjoyed my first few hours with the game somewhat, I have decided to take a break from it, perhaps never to return, because Starfield is a bit naff.

i'm thinking this game won't be the best version of itself up until 3 to 5 years from now, it's like Cyberpunk when it came out, it wasn't that great and needed a shit load of work, now granted this launch isn't nearly as bad but it is pretty bad in many areas, and to say it's the least buggy is just a straight up lie lol.
but yeah once they release the creation kit 2 is when modders will be able to make some ground breaking mods for the game, right now the mods are ok but even modders are admitting they would do better if the kit was out.
here's hoping the kit doesn't come with issues when they release that like every other time they release it to the public in the past, but it will come with issues we know how bethesda opperates.

Too be fair, a great deal of the problems of starfield comes from the setting. I already knew it was going to be like this. The fun of bethesda games is the world immersion by the lore discovery, random encounters and exploration. All of these are very bad in starfield. Then what you are left with is bassically very small confined bethesda worlds that don't interact with each other at all. The random encounters don't feel random, they feel scripted because they always happen straight out of a fast travel.

I find it wild that studios expect people to suck hundreds of hours into a game just to begin having fun. A tightly designed, 30-50 hour experience that sticks with you and begs to be replayed is far better than a jank infinite sandbox that plays like a part time job.

Granted, in many ways they're very different, but I definitely get a feeling similar to the old Bethesda magic while I've been exploring in Red Dead 2. You're never far from something interesting happening fairly organically. By comparison, Starfield feels like a chore as I'm constantly having to sit through, long static conversations or loading screens, with everything broken up into too small a chunks.

During the Early Access phase when people were paying it a recurring statement I saw was "the game only gets good after X hours". Ah yes, truly the sign of an amazing game.
Titanfall 2's campaign was criminally short, like 5-6 hours at best. But there's the thing, it didn't take hours for the game to get good, it only needed 20 minutes, by then end of the first mission I was shown off the parkour, different equipment, the villains, a very bare minimum story and got to pilot a Titan. I was hooked, and much like any good game, it left me wanting more and to replay the game again. 140 hours here. I REALLY tried.
After 140 hours of giving this game every chance in the world, I think I might actually genuinely be done with it too. It's the most gorgeous but most unsatisfying gaming experience I've ever had. And not for the usual arguments, I'm talking about the quests mostly, the actual activities that take you through The world (The other issues don't help but I've had fun with other more wonkier BHS games).
One example: the fact that I need to shoot up Petrov and his crew 'for science' really pissed me off. And then Sarah scolds me for accidentally killing a civilian. Wtf? Constellation's irrational obsession with these artefacts is sonetimes infuriating. The game absolutely INSISTS you end up in the unity and half the time I was BEGGING the star born to steal the artefacts from me. Omg aaahh.
Anyway, then as a result of stealing Petrov's artefact I get arrested by Sysdef (Petrov did mention he'd report me). Sysdef give no explanation at all and insist on me going under cover. I tell them to f off. Then I get sent to Mars and... nothing. I'm free.
So I thought you know what, I'm going to kill the pirates myself. So I go to the Key and start a massive fight. I dock and start murdering them all... except half of them are unkillable. Omg.
In fallout 4 I could kill all the raiders at nukaworld, the railroad, the brotherhood, the institute... and the game would adjust. Even after going through the whole crimson fleet quest just as the uc want to attack, I cannot betray the pirates and steal Kryx legacy. They're still all unkillable. Even when you face Ikande you cannot offer a way to betray the pirates. Nothing. No choice.
This gave me far cry 5 flashbacks. No actual choices. I only played fc5 once and never came back.
I tried my level best to find pleasure in it, but I doubt I'll ever play this game again. Mmmmaybe when mods come out, but I doubt they can fix the illogical quest choices... especially the insufferable main quest omg 😭
I feel stupid for railing on a game... especially a game this vast and beautiful... but it's a beautiful world filled with utter morons, including the player character... especially the player character for not having a realistic range of dialog options. Even fallout 4, that everyone seems to hate, had way more freedom than this ffing game.

I am roughly 6 hours into this game, and I was holding out hope that it would get more interesting as I learned the game and played more. After watching this video, my worst fears were realized. This game is not like all the other Bethesda games, in a bad way.
My favorite part of playing these games was to disappear and make my own way. Get lost, explore, gain levels, loot, and return to town to heal, purchase, and sometimes play a quest.
This is obviously not the case here. I can hardly ever find battles. Most are avoidable if you choose. The spaceship element leaves something to be desired, and why am I always lost on what to do???

I struggle with these games too. I love the idea of it, and some people love it, but as soon as I start I just get this sense of dread about hours I am going to spend fetch questing. I know some people love to relax and just sink themselves into it and go aimlessly exploring and aren't concerned with the time it takes. Unfortunately with a busy life it's just not in my mindset to do that. I just know no matter what time I put into it I'm never going get to the bottom of it. Also after being spoiled for so many hours with Halo combat AI, the combat in Starfield is really dull, and seems more about the linear scaling upgrade of your weapons, rather than it testing your tactical brain.

Wow, I could truly not agree more with all of your points. It's like you read my mind!
I have also played most of Bethesda's games starting from Morrowind, and I just see regressions everywhere. And the new stuff is not a suitable replacement for the reasons you said. I honestly feel like the game is better when it *isn't* being Starfield. That is to say, when you're doing some handmade quests, or going into some outpost to look for an item or take out some Spacers, it feels very similar to Fallout and TES. But then it falls apart when you have to do some Starfield nonsense again, like fast traveling in the menu 3 times in a row to get anywhere or having to engage at all in the terrible ship combat. You can see the old Bethesda magic trying to shine through, but it gets snuffed out shortly after over and over again.
Also, what is up with the NPC AI in this game? That was another one of Bethesda's most unique aspects. I don't think this game even has an ounce of the Radiant AI system in it. No one seems to have any kind of schedule for one. Named NPCs are permanently rooted to their respective areas. The cities are filled with hundreds of nameless generics, but if you look close, no one seems to be doing anything of note. We have also lost NPC homes as well. Visiting a tower in New Atlantis only to find that you can visit exactly *one* room was tragic. And no one is even home!
I'm just utterly disappointed that Bethesda used to have all of this down to a T. And they just threw it all away for some reason. I'm not having much hope for TES6 at this point, sadly.

I remember mowing lawns to save up enough money to buy Elder Scrolls Arena in 1995. I've been an unapologetic Bethesda fanboy for well over 2 decades. The entire reason i keep coming back to PC is for the Bethesda game modding so you'd think i'd be first in line to buy the game. The weird part is that i completely forgot they were even working on the game and when i heard it finally came out i kind of went "meh" and moved on.
I honestly couldn't understand why until i was talking to someone at work who'd bought and played Starfield as their very first Bethesda game. He was complaining about all the bugs and i had to keep telling him that's the way their games have always been, then it hit me. The reason i really didn't care was because i knew exactly what the game was going to be right down every specific bug, glitch, and crash. I'd even correctly guessed the plot down to the point they were going to use "born" as part of the player's "you're the chosen one" plot because Bethesda is so unoriginal that despite it being a completely new IP they *still* can't move past Skyrim.
Bethesda makes the exact same game over and over and have done that since Morrowind, even down to recycling the same game engine complete with bugs and memory leak issues.
The fact is i've grown and my taste in games has adapted with the times so i've come to expect quality and Bethesda quality hasn't changed at all in 2 decades.
They're a shell of a company desperately trying to live on early 2000's nostalgia for a time when they actually put effort into their games and Starfield is the embodiment of that sentiment.

My initial impression was that while it was another Bethesda RPG, they backtracked on an integral aspect of gameplay that defined a Bethesda RPG; the idea that everything is accessible on the outset and you play the way you want to become who you want. Having to spend valuable perk points just to sneak or lockpick was a massive red flag for me.

Remember, in Elder Scrolls you level skills by using them so naturally you have to be able to use them from the start. And Fallout was based on an already existing framework. It's not like what you described is a core concept in Bethesda games.

The graphics are great at times and utterly lifeless in others. My list goes on and on. I'm thankful I got my 70$ back. If you enjoy your time with it, cool, but it was a waste of mine for me.

@@SmGTwist The step back criticism is always an interesting one to me. It really comes down to which features a given person considers "core" or not. If you thought skill points weren't as good as the F04 perk system that may be a step forward but if you personally like skill points it's a "step back".
In reality, Howard has explained previously that each game they make gets its own system. People see each game as a progression but really it's novel. That's why Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are so different. They aren't evolving, they're fundamentally different.

@r.rodriguez4991 I'm not just talking about a Bethesda title at this point. Starfield is its own game, but there are games out there that do Starfield better than Starfield does that have been out for years, if not close to a decade. The game feels old, looks old, and has a majority of boring worlds to explore... it really should have been given more time to cook in the oven because 8 years apparently wasn't enough time to make a gripping, compelling, unique game.
People are telling me you need to play it for X amount of time for it to get good, where X is however many dozens of hours, and that I didn't give it a chance. Those same people will say to others levying criticism that they spent X number of hours playing it so they must've enjoyed it and dismiss valid criticism. The White Knighting for this game and Bethesda are mind-boggling to me. Not saying that's you, but I've seen it a lot in the community and it's aggravating, especially because it sends the message to Bethesda they can keep putting out unoptimized garbage and people will lap it up. Something that I've learned over the course of running tabletop RPGs (like Dungeons and Dragons) is when making a sandbox for the players to make only a handful of locations, and I think that rule could apply here as well. My role of thumb is to flush out only 5 or so locations for the players to explore. Making too many, as so often happens when world building, leads to a situation where you're constantly talking about how this place is so different from the last but without really getting to feel hour the place is interesting and ends up making the world feel smaller. It feels paradoxical but it's the and reason you touched on here; that the content ends up feeling shallow.

I played Elden Ring for the first time less than a week ago after a friend gifted me a copy, and I have to say: the amount of pride for their work that the devs at FS have compared to BGS is staggering. Now I know that these are two completely different genres of games, but it needs to be addressed that these two dev studios are well-known for, I guess, "sticking to their guns" when it comes to their design philosophy.
FS catches a lot of flak for not really innovating on their gameplay, but I would argue that they don't really need to fix anything because nothing is broken because it was built with care and attention to detail in the first place. Meanwhile in Bethesda land, fans have been begging them to overhaul not only their game engine but also their whole design philosophy and attitude towards players for fucking years, now. It kills me that people are somehow saying that SF is Todd's magnum opus when the only real improvement over their last game is that it looks slightly better. The fact that Elder scrolls VI will be on this engine is just pathetic. If skyrim ends up STILL being a better game than ES6, when it releases, I will laugh so hard.
At the end of the day, BGS is just an obscenely lazy dev studio that has just been phoning it in for a while now. And microsoft needs to get their shit together and start reining them in, because it's unacceptable for a studio to take this long to churn out games only for them to end up just being mid at best.

I’m over 70 hours in, I’ve yet to leave UC space or join a faction. I’ve helped miners on Mars, collected loans for a bank, helped a little girl put up some posters, raided pirate bases and boarded their ships, and hung out with mom and dad. @@alphamineronIs it objectively terrible though? What it lacks in the exploration side it makes up in the sheer amount of story lines you can bump into by just walking around any of the cities.
I'm not sure where the "it takes X amount of hours to get good" statement comes from either. As soon as the game let me loose I just roamed New Atlantis and within like half an hour found myself helping the UC infiltrate a pirate crew and destroy it from within, become a courier for a smuggling ring, and a bunch more. And that was just by talking to a few peeps in the starting city. 20 hours later and I am still busy doing the side content, having barely touched the main quest.
It's fair to not be into that kind of style of game but then again that's subjective.

The narrator described the sheer amount of storylines and exploration as “wide but shallow”. The quality standard isn’t around the $60-80 bucks they ask, that’s the point. Starfield would be impressive around 2017-18 but it’s 2023 now. If it was sold at $30 even that would make it impressive.
Plain plastic characters, uninteresting worlds, boring open world design centered around quests, bad combat and movement mechanics, artificially bloated content count and uninspiring design. These are the points the narrator made in the video, that’s why I said objectively terrible

The lack of a good story is my main gripe. At the start Lin and Heller behave like an annoying bickering couple but it does not introduce us to the game in any way. Why are we in a mine?: we don’t know, it's not explained. Lin tells us most dusties never make it this far, but we just started our second day on the job. So most people die on the first day on the job, really? Then why did I volunteer for this suicide mission, the game does not explain it. Lin also pretends to care about us at first and that we just want to mine minerals and go home safe but we soon find out she is lying and just wants to use us to get the artifact. Suddenly Lin becomes extremely reckless, with our life of course, not her own. And it’s no longer about safely mining minerals like she told us 50 seconds before, it’s about getting a valuable artifact. Wait, what? After getting the artifact Lin literally says: we got what we were looking for. So she risked all those miner's lives so she could become rich? Both Lin and Heller are extremely unlikable right from the start. They lied to me, they pretended to be my friend, instead abused me and don’t want to tell us what is really going on and then I get the option to say “Thank you for everything’ to Lin and even take her and Heller on board later? Why would I ever want to do that? I hate these people right from the start. Barrett does not explain anything either other than us sticking to the Indigo protocol meaning bringing the ship safely back to New Atlantis. And after defeating the 3 Crimson ships we can safely do that. But the game does not let us, it wants us to violate the Indigo protocol instead and go and find more pirates. Why? No idea, it’s not explained.
And what does Constellation actually do? No idea, it’s never explained. Yes, they were supposed to be exploring the universe but instead stayed within the Settled Systems only and went to the planets where already settlements, mining facilities, listening stations, abandoned factories, etc. were already there, thousands of people must have already seen the minerals, flora and fauna and no doubt everything must have already been cataloged long ago. So Constellation will never discover anything new, everything we find has already been discovered before. So what exactly have they been doing since the 40 years they exist? No idea. Why didn’t they use the Eye to find more artifacts before, why only start now? No idea. Why do they need me and not somebody else. No idea. This temple was right next to a big facility, why didn’t anyone bother to look at one of those temples with the weird floating rocks before? No idea, the game does not explain anything. But after we, the player, found an artifact Constellation finally DOES have something to do. Both the Hunter and the Emissary don’t really seem to care about what we decide, and at least that part makes perfect sense cause it is all pointless anyway. If we don’t help them it doesn’t matter to either of them cause they can simply go to another universe to convince someone else and get more artifacts that way. Who made and scattered these artifacts? We don't know cause nothing is explained. And in the end all it gets us is a new game plus so we can do the whole pointless exercise all over again. No thank you, not for me: make a good game with a good story first. After finishing the game I realized it is just a pointless and boring looter shooter (it’s most certainly not an RPG) I’ll give them a 6/10 just for effort and the reasonably nice graphics. It's just a 15 yo game without a story line promoted as a next gen.

The lack of nearly any fun exploration really kills it for me. Like you said there's not really any incentive to do much besides fast travel between quest points. Quest's aren't even found organically a lot of the time. You can sprint around a city and random NPCs will start talking to you and then just automatically add the quest without you even stopping to listen. Hoping that some of this stuff gets ironed out over the course of updates and mods, but not sure much can be done about exploration given the setting and scale requires so much fast travel.

From what I've gathered after hearing many others reviews, preferences and my own perspective, the game is both impressive and bleh, falling more on the lines of just decent. It's impressive how the game was this massive and actually very playable, and also how it gives you numerous interesting routes to take. In my opinion, this is not a competitive game at all, it's purely casual, so i don't expect competitive players to enjoy it much.
On the other hand, it can be pretty bleh when it comes to NPCs, main story, and space exploration, which it's bad for a space exploration game to have bad space exploration. They should've cut it down to 10-20 planets, there was no need to go into the thousands. The graphics and gameplay feel like early 360 generation, but I don't think that's a bad thing - that doesn't make a game bad, it just splits the players taste for it up.
Those who go into the game with a goal in mind seem to really enjoy it. If you want to be a drug dealer, you can be. If you want to be a bounty hunter, you can be. I believe this game's creativity is really good. Would I say it's worth it with its price tag? Yes. It's a decent game that's for your good old casual players, but i do believe planet exploration is the worst thing about this "planet exploration game". Scrap that stuff, and we may just find a pretty good game.
Will say one thing though. If a game this massive can release in a playable state, then the dozens of triple aaa titles we've got over the recent years have no excuse for their games being an absurdly glitchy and unplayable mess upon their release.

Everytime i play a recently released rpg i always find myself going back to the older games like new vegas and skyrim. Those games had so much charm. todays games lack pretty much everything.

I had this day 1, pre order job, PAID on pc, no gamepass.
I got about 20 hours in, and I went back to the 'outer worlds' from the old fallout devs. Its so much better than starfield.

I didnt even make it to 25 hours - I took about 3 and never came back. What a shame - it could have been great!

Have you ever played No Man's Sky? I haven't played starfield, but I kept on being reminded of NMS with the issues (and many of the visuals, particularly in space) you brought up - and it was released 5 years ago.

2020s graphics is generous for some stuff, the NPCs look like those creepy hyper realistic sex dolls haha.

GManLives showed an excellent comparison revealing the enormous gap in animation quality when talking to NPCs, between Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield!
Starfield looks like a joke in that department lol.
He also rants often about games like this which “Don’t value your time.”
And I think Starfield is the poster child for that statement.

I stopped playing after the first mission (the Krait research facility). The only way to complete it is to go in shooting. No stealth option, no alternative path that takes you past the belligerents without a fight. No locked doors that can be unlocked by the completest and take you through the most direct route. Not even non-lethal weapons that allow you to take out the enemy without killing them (so your reputation with the faction remains intact). Oh, and probably no hidden ending if you go through the whole game with very low kills.
What we have here is a shooter with basic looting and base building. I even already suspect that stats are not there for role-play; they are nothing more than barriers that hinder progression (via switches that only open in late-game).
Some may think I am asking for too much, but Deus Ex got it right... a quarter century ago.

Starfield is one of many illustrations over the last 3 years that novel hiring practices are directly detrimental to the quality of the output.
