Ok, have I misunderstood the story on this for two years? Because I _thought_ it was: Lime gives everything to lemon > lemon leaves when lime has nothing more > lime finds lemon's cork and is overcome with loss > lime slowly recovers and finds orange, who heals lime > lemon returns and decides to try and make amends, but is killed by the turtle in doing so > orange and lime mourn lemon.
But I just noticed the turtle scene is shot like a flashback, making the story: Lime gives everything to lemon > lemon leaves when lime has nothing more > lime finds lemon's cork and is overcome with loss > lime slowly recovers and finds orange, who heals lime > it's revealed that when lemon left, they realised their mistake and tried to fill their jar, then died, making lime finding lemon's cork far more tragic > lemon returns but as a ghost, at which point we see what happened to them with the turtle > orange and lime mourn lemon.
It doesn't quite make sense, because if the second version is true, how could lemon be following lime and stalking lime and orange? But the flashback at 2:47 shows the earlier scene when lemon left, but extended to show they changed their mind and went back; and also establishes that the cork falling out at 1:25 is because lemon died. So does lime know lemon died, hence carrying around their cork in mourning? Is lemon following lime a hallucination, is lemon a ghost at that point like later on?
Seems stupid to overanalyse, but it's a beautiful song and video, and I don't know if I've simply got it wrong for two years or if it's very loose and open to interpretation. The different possibilities are so different, though - in one, lemon only tries to make amends after they see lime and orange together. In the other, lemon tried to make amends much earlier but died before being able to do so, leaving lime alone without knowing what lime tried to do until later. Which is even more goddamn heartbreaking.
I think lemon might have been stalking lime as a ghost checking on their living friend in a sort of “I’m so proud of you” kind of way, but I’m not too sure
I think the video is specifically framed to make you second guess, actually. We see the ghost of lemon following lime, and we think its lemon being stalkerish and toxic. But then it gives us the flashback and we realize it wasn't that, it was lemon's ghost, possibly looking out for their friend, possibly just aimlessly unsure of what else to do, probably desperate to apologize probably desperate. "I get it now that it's too late; I never stopped feeling guilty." The flashback recontextualizes the whole video before it. "I hope you think of me still as your friend."
Hey, you're all cool for indulging me. I think it has to be the second narrative; lime knows lemon's dead the moment they find the cork, erects a gravestone at some point after that, then either realises or hallucinates that lemon tried to make amends when later visiting the grave with orange. The sudden disappearance of lemon when lime looks back at the end makes me think it's in lime's head. Or that lemon IS there, as a ghost, but lime can't actually see them.
Hell of a video. There's three or four different ways to interpret it and each one is sad and beautiful in its own way.

I think lemon wanted to return and make amends shortly after he'd run off but was killed in the process of return and has been a ghost following like around ever since. Also, it's clear that if he didn't have his cork in his juice would be drained so I think lime knew or strongly suspected lemon was dead because he wouldn't have been able to survive without it?

this song reminds me of my old friend who moved away years ago. we were friends for a long time and we fantasized about one day being vets together at our future animal hospital "pet palace". we were so childlike and when we were together i had no worries at all. we were so close. we had imaginary pets hers was a cat named spark and i had a dog named scout. she was just so warm and kind. then in the 3rd grade (yeah we were lil kids) she told me she was moving away to texas. i figured we were playing make believe and so i put my little hand to my ear and said "my mom called! i am too!" her eyes turned darker. she said "no....maisie. im not kidding." the expression on my faced changed. i remember walking to class, crying.
a few months later it was the last day of school. she would be moving that summer and it was the last time i would see her (and i still havent to this day) i got to my stop and i gave her a big hug. i remember feeling her tear fall on my shoulder and i bet mine did too. my mom awaited me outside the door and i said to her "i have to go. im so sorry." i turned to the door and i didn't look back. god, i wish i had looked back. my mom was comforting me and i was still crying. my best friend gone. and i dont think she realizes how much i care about her. i miss you veronica. (god im sorry im so sensitive my computer is wet with tears)

my brother passed away by suicide when i was 12. i listen to this song and imagine it’s him saying these things to me. i miss him. music is always one of the things that brings him back on some level. it helps me feel like i can talk to him. like he’s still aware of me, and watching me grow up. it’s been over ten years and the grief hasn’t passed, but it’s turned into something much more beautiful. i’m grateful for it

my interpretation of this:
lime does everything for lemon. they’re best friends. the juice is a metaphor for the energy they put into the relationship, and lime is happy to give everything to lemon. lemon gets upset that lime is doing everything for him so he runs away. upset, like moves on to find orange. lime and orange begin to share juices, and it’s a balanced relationship. while lime and orange are out there being best friends or dating, lemon realizes that he shouldn’t have left, and he feels guilty. after lemon dies, lime gets upset again, but lemon hopes that he’s happy with orange.

I think lemon becomes greedy of lime's juice, and expects lime to keep giving his juice even when lime is running out, so lemon is in the wrong for running away and that's why lemon feels bad and goes to run back to lime but then gets eaten by turtle.

This was the first Cavetown song I ever heard because I saw Louis, one of the art directors, tweet about it. It's weird to think that if I hadn't seen that tweet back then, I wouldn't have discovered my favourite artist who has helped me through a lot, and I probably would have never discovered I was aromantic either. I guess I've been very lucky
I had first started talking to her when my grandfather died. I had to postpone our first date to suddenly fly out of state. When I returned she was waiting for me at the airport and had brought me dinner. We drove out to the fields by the runways and watched the planes land. She was wearing a green blouse.
7 months later she told me her feelings were coming and going and she didn't know where to go from here. Something about a break was brought up, or it really ended, I still don't know. I left her place internally devastated.
This was about 2 weeks ago. I was folding laundry when this song came on, and now I'm just sobbing.

I had an ex three years ago, they introduced me to a lot of stuff and it includes cavetown, who have become my favorite artist until now. We were only together for a short period of time but it was the best time of my life. No one's perfect but for me, they are. Absolutely the best person I've ever met, they were pure, innocent, and selfless.
But I took advantage of that back then. Being naive and young is no excuse. The guilt of what I did to them and how much I hurt them have never change up until now. I still cry a lot over them and the messed up things I've done. Also I've been working on myself for the past three years to be better, to at least make up for my mistakes.
A year ago we talked and they have already forgiven me for what I've done. I think I don't deserve it. I don't think I will ever forgive myself for it- for hurting such a wonderful person, for doing something so bad.

For three years up until now, I never really never wanted anything from them. What I have for them are just pure adoration and love- even though it's from a distance. I wish for nothing but their well-being. I don't have to be involved. They have a partner now and I'm absolutely proud of them. At least they're happy, at least their well-being's in good condition. And if not, I truly hope soon it will be. We're still friends and I am truly thankful for it. I see myself undeserving of such thing but I can't believe it, we're actually friends. I still love them but I make no moves nor I have plans to. I just support them from afar.
As long as they're well, I'm well. I don't have to be involved in their life.

I hope you know you're not the only person who's found themselves in such a situation... However, the ex of mine who [I thought] we were pursuing marriage with, decided that she didn't want to put in the effort and she went with someone else who was after her. She was filled with red flags, and I only started to see them towards the end of our relationship... Now she's being bitter and spiteful towards me, without making "direct" contact, and I want nothing more than to apologize to her for the things I did wrong on my end, but she jumped right into a short engagement with someone she just met. I want to have the same ending that you did, but I don't believe I ever will. She's chosen to be the victim and bitter about everything in her life, and if I ever attempted to make contact again, it would just solidify and justify that in her mind.

the way i interpret this is that the lemon is robin, the lime is the girl that green is about, and the orange is her new "boyfriend". robin said in the description of this song on bandcamp that green is about a girl he loved but he didn't treat as well as he should have, she gave him everything she could and he didn't. when our little lemon guy tries to give back it ends badly and it seems like he was coming off selfish, meanwhile the lime found someone who gave her what she deserved. in the end, they all gain closure and are able to be okay with the past and move on. she was upset and angry but moved on and grew with someone who gave her everything. it's not a completely happy ending but there are no hard feelings towards each other

aww this is so sad and sweet! this song makes me emotional every time i listen to it :(
One thing I find beyond beautiful about how this music video is filmed is that it almost feels like we share the grieving process/or simply moving on from a relationship in general regarding the lime; We feel the sadness, hatred, upset from how Lime gave everything to Lemon with nothing in return, the unresolved issues, we can feel that throughout the music video before seeing the bigger picture of how Lemon did try to give back but it was too late - I think that's wonderful, how there is that limitation of one set of emotions (hatred, sadness, distaste, hurt) before conveying another set (content, happiness and new beginnings). I do feel like this is a very lovely representation of moving on, healing and learning to grow even when we wished something could have gone better than we originally thought.
I also feel some connection in the regards to that my past relationship was mostly one-sided effort and this went on for around 6-7 years, so I gave in so much effort to be dismissed heavily, it got to a point I would justify any reason to 'love' this person I was with and to an extent, I feel people do feel that way when they unconditionally love someone or something, they give their all with no intention of anything in return and then well, it gets to a 'breaking point' a point where you can't give any more and some people (I am guilty of this sometimes) have a habit of being so loving, caring and over-baring that they will deprive their own health, self-care for the help and benefit of another and when those things end, it can fall into a sense of hate, a sense of upset, hurt; You feel hurt because even though you gave your all it never feels enough, even though you tried your best, it didn't work out, even with all that love and that's because love is always two-sided (or just in general every party of the relationship) and not one-sided; It's a commitment of all involved, not just one.
When it came to mine, I feel that sense of relieving, happy moving on emotion, it took a lot of time to get over something like that but it also can be just hard to open yourself up to someone new and a part of who you are is made from those past experiences, those small things you take around with you but then it comes to a day you can have two type of closure, a closure with yourself in the sense you realise your worth and you say 'It's okay if this didn't work out, I tried my best and I know I am worth more than this' and a second where the person who you were involved with begins to learn too, even if you aren't together, that optimistic hope that they themselves can improve on themselves, be the best person they can be and can experience those happy moments with new people the same way you can, it becomes uplifting and hopeful because it means you can learn to forgive and heal.
...I also just really love this music video because Green is one of my favourite songs.

Relationships take effort from both sides in order to work. The lime gave all its love to the lemon and it drained itself in the process. The lemon got used to absorbing all this love and never gave anything in return. It became angry when their relationship became strained and exhausted so it ran. Lime found Orange who put in as much effort in the relationship as it did, and their relationship flourished. Lemon realized its mistake and how much it truly loved Lime, but never got to tell it because it was scared and was eaten by a tortoise. Maybe the tortoise represents being overcome with fear, depression, and/or self hate?

The juice is love. She poured out all of her love for him and received nothing back. She had no more love to give so he left. She finally found someone who could give her the juice (love) she wanted. He got jealous and upset and he was ready to give her all his love but sadly died. So fucking beautiful. Nice job. I love you Robbie.
In the song, I think the death is metaphorical. It signals the end of what they had, he finally got over it and moved on. I know that your comment was more aimed at the video, but just thought I'd point that out.

Maybe you could see robbie's point of view towards this song and compare other's point of view. I personally love all the theories because they're so beautiful.
