    Excellent video detailing a maintenance task which I believe many approach with trepidation. The cutaway is the icing on the cake.
    Somewhat related if one is chasing down excess play at the steering wheel is the importance of a dead tight fit of the pitman arm on the shaft. One needs to bear down with a heavy hand on the clamping bolt until any and all play is removed between the pitman and shaft. Any movement here will be magnified up at the wheel.
    Always good to see Bob on the set ! I’m sure he realizes the incredible importance of your (plural) educational gift to the Model A community and the extreme appreciation felt by the viewership.
    As the fleet continues aging it’s going to become more and more important that the cars not be subjected to improper or ham fisted maintenance and repairs. Thank you

    On a very rare occasion you do need to adjust the eccentric rivet this can be done in the car with a cranked screwdriver . When you adjust the big eccentric nut you can get uneven binding on lock this means the box is not on a central pivot point . This last adjustment is easy to do ,all nuts must be backed off slightly so the box can "skid" when you turn the rivet . When the binding is equal on both locks the job is done ,tighten the nuts and the rivet is set . Excellent video as usual , thank you !!!

    Hi Paul! I love the cutaway box! Very effective instruction. One point to make thought. Bench centering of the steering box is not the same centering as when it is in the car, as it is a known physical fact that it takes more turns to turn left than it does to turn right. (Put your front axle up on a floor jack and give it a try). So I install my steering wheel and set my box adjustments based on actual steering center point as installed in the car instead of bench center point. My steering box works perfect (even with a shortened pitman arm!). Rock on, you two! And more Q&A videos with Bob!

    What’s always puzzled me about the various versions of the steering box that have popped up over the decades, is why no-one ever just went for the simplest and most obvious solution. I’m talking about rack and pinion. None of those levers, worm drives and gods know what else. Just one toothed pinion and a toothed rack extending out to the wheel hubs. And it’s easy to adjust and maintain, and it’s the most accurate steering mechanism we have. But its obviousness - why and how did it pass people by?

They get compressed over time. You can move it in but if you over adjust you can't back it out. You must than spread it to pull the race back and adjust again. Simply done by pulling up on the steering wheel. I'm surprised you have never run in to that. I'm sure you know, but you cannot adjust the upper bearing with the column clamped to it . Thanks Fred!! They are supposed to have thick oil in them and not grease. Even though some of the steering boxes have had grease fitting put on them, that was there for thick oil to be pumped into, not grease. The owner's manual has all that info. When a worm gear has grease instead of oil, and pressure is on it, the lube can cavitate. Oil still fills the gaps.

    How much of a difference do needle bearings for the pitman arm axle actually make? I hear different opinions from experienced model a mechanics

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  Před 2 lety

      If the bushings and sector shaft are perfectly machined, no difference. If your tolerances aren't very good, the needle bearings are pretty awesome.

    I know this is not polite, but could I bother you for some quick CZcams advice? If you get a video where people get mad and start unsubscribing, do you delete it? It's sort of happening to me.. also, I'm less stressed now that I've heard you say jiggle so many times ha ha

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  Před 2 lety +1

      Hahaa! Well, it depends on the video. The one I posted that is causing people to unsub is about patriotism. In today's political climate, some people are offended at the mere mention of the United States or the sight of the US flag. So, if people offended by the US flag want to unsubscribe, that's fine with me. Now, if I did a video about white-letter tires and people were offended and unsubscribed, then I might consider taking it down because maybe the problem was me. Drop me an email and let me know which video you are concerned about. I haven't seen you do anything offensive, so maybe it isn't you.

      @@ModelA thank you ☺️ it's my last video explaining why I'm vegetarian and not vegan. I changed the tittle and thumbnail and that seems to have solved it. Comments are also positive, so maybe it was just a classic case of me misinterpreting social cues ha ha

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  Před 2 lety +1

      I saw that video. I thought the black cat attacking the flower clusters was hilarious! Anyway, you have to be VERY careful when communicating with vegans. In your video you touched on how being vegan is not just a diet, it is a lifestyle. Well, many vegans take it farther and get into the habit of insisting other people need to be vegan also or you are a disgusting waste of flesh. It's not fair, and it's not rational. However, if you start telling a vegan that you eat eggs because they came from your backyard chickens, they don't understand that those unfertilized eggs will go to waste if you don't collect them. I remember a vegan telling Tina she was stealing the eggs her chickens left behind and how ashamed she should be for stealing those un-hatched chicks. Vegans are very intense. Your original title was "Why I am not vegan" or similar. That will just trigger a vegan faster than anything. You set yourself up with the perfect storm of vegan hate bait. Now, this isn't your fault. Vegans are WAY too sensitive, as a whole. Example- You and I are vegetarians for health reasons, but I really have no choice while you choose to be vegetarian. It would be as if you saw me taste a meat product (let's say a bite of fish) and then totally unfriended me and called me names because you saw fish go in my mouth. Obviously, you would never do that because being vegetarian has different levels and some sense of forgiveness for certain occasions. Veganism is the most rigid lifestyle on the planet, and vegans will tear each other to pieces for "breaking the rules" and there is no leniency for special occasions, like a family meal. In many cases, vegans are just plain violent! Well, some of your audience and subscribers are vegans, that's just the area where you dabble. Saying anything even slightly triggering to people THAT sensitive (irrational) is going to get some angry un-subs. The good news is, they will probably eventually come back because they get curious what you're up to after a while.

      @BeetTheRush Před 2 lety

      @@ModelA if I were to be mad at anyone who eats meat, I wouldn't talk to anyone in my family and work. In real life I personally know 2 vegetarians, one I haven't seen in years and the other one I see about once every two months. It would be very lonely, that's for sure. I still believe most people are kind and then there's a vocal minority of radical people who will be mean to you. And you're right, they may come back. And if they don't it's because they weren't cool enough, and we have a strictly cool people on the channel ☺️ Leo is adorable he has 1 canine tooth left but he was going for those flowers like a Lion, big self esteem ha ha

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  Před 2 lety

      Don't lose any sleep over it. Just remember that a large percentage of your audience is vegan, and vegans are often way too sensitive and touchy.
