- I show/explain preload adjustment on a 2015 Yamaha XT 250. this applies to many years of the XT.
1 CORRECTION(0:50): OE Preload Spacer is 28mm or 1.1" and is 128mm in length or 5.03"
I can tell you with the front spacers and the rear preload increased the ride is much more comfortable and reasonable for a 230lb rider. It's feels hugely improved on the street and I can't wait to try it off-road. Before these adjustments off-road it was far too plush for any aggressive riding. I will lay money that now it feels much better.
Common Tools: 14mm wrench, 17mm socket, 10mm socket, 8mm hex, ratchet & extensions. Bike stand is likely a must otherwise a heavy duty cooler can work in a pinch.

I adjusted mine without all that drama, just use a long crappy screwdriver and knock it around with the hammer👍
Yea too much a pita. Much easier to remove. Take maybe 5min to remove and 4min to replace.
Hammer and screwdriver wouldn't work for me, had to remove the shock.
Also I put coins in my forks as spacers, definitely helps!
Just what I needed to see, thank you for keeping it clear and to the point!
Very helpful, thanks.
Thank you for the video, I should have watched until the end, I fought with those relays to get access to the bolt. But it gave me the confidence to pull the shock out, and while at it grease up all the fittings in the links and swingarm. I first tried hitting with a driver and hammer but that adjuster nut just would not move. I pulled the shock out instead.
Great video...cheers..Jason from Perth
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for putting this together. I was wondering how to easily get to that rear collar. I was thinking about replacing the rear spring since I'm kinda fat @ 240lbs. Wish my stock husky501 spring I have sitting around would be an upgrade, but probably need somethign from racetech.
Super easy! You got this. I removed mine from the bike. Comes with out the bottom.
Thanks for the video. I also want to add hand guards to my XT. I have a pair of universal style Barkbusters I was going to use on another bike I sold. They look like they are a bit big and clumsy for the XT. What guards does your XT have? Thanks
Barkbuster JET. I've added a link in my description.
The front stock preload is NOT 3/4" dia. It is 28mm or 1.1" and is 128mm in length or 5.03 ".
Updated. Good callout.
What u did to the front suspension does that help with it not to bottom out
A little bit, but nothing of huge impact for that. In short this preload will make the front feel less sloppy.
I'm thinking pvc pipe would be lighter, cheaper, better?
I'm not sure it would take the abuse. But you could try.
