I had a voile and the gap between the 2 was huge. If you came back through a resort and ride some chop or small mogels it was like riding 2 boards. Was always a toss up on whether to snowshoe and ride with a solid board but extra weight or enjoy hiking with the splitty but deal with the movement. Your setup looks sweet
Anyone have issues with the toe/lever disengaging on hard impacts with hard boot bindings? I experimented with phantom bindings when they first came out and paired them with la sporitva Sideral hardboots. Loved the performance and feel but I was testing them in resorts and if you overshot an icy jump, the bails would disengage. Not super often but, enough that it was hard to trust them. Definitely played around with the tightness settings which didn't help. I eventually created a rope strap cinching system that went through a drilled hole in the toe lever, around the boots sides, and then connected to the heel bail and this actually did solve the problem. It was just sort of annoying to have to deal with the extra steps. Krister, some of these scenarios you're in are so high consequence that I'd imaging you can't afford to be dealing with this problem.
I’ve heard of people riding arcteryx proclines having the same problem and their issue was that the toe welt on the boot wasn’t quite substantial enough. I’m in the phantom slippers and have never once had a problem with the toe bail disengaging even with bigger impacts. That would be a bit terrifying honestly. I saw people with proclines modifying the toe welt to seat the bail better.
Yes! I've had this issue quite a bit, actually. I have the phantom bindings and the phantom slipper boot. It certainly doesn't happen all the time, but enough to loose confidence in the bindings. On steep exposed descents, I'll lock the toe bails down with a ski strap under my boot. It seems to work but incredibly annoying. I've tried every adjustment possible but continue to have this issue. They are currently set to the tightest position possible for my boots. 90% of the time, they hold no problem, but the toe bails still pop open every now and then. About a month ago I was riding STS couloir in Roger's Pass (Canada) about half way down both bindings popped open causing my board to slide down the rest of the couloir and forced me to butt slide down the rest of the 40° couloir.
Hi! I came of from the phantom bindings once doing a butter, but it was totally my fault. I had the bindings super loose and ever since I make sure to have them tight as hell. And I haven't had an problems what so ever, and I have taken the bindings for a ride :P
@@gvinoski Definitely would be interested in seeing this toe lug mod. I've considered bolting on an extender piece to the toe lug. Not sure if that would effect the walk mode toe tech engagement though because i've actually never gotten around to trying hardboots on a splitboard. I'm finally considering splitboarding again so I'm looking to revisit this soon. My toe lever lace bridge method did actually did work well and you really felt like you didn't have to worry. I think I could design a better version of it where I can engage it faster though. Ski straping the lever down sounds interesting too. Really been missing the fit of properly molded AT boots especially when used with zip fit liners. Stayed super consistent in feel for over 3 seasons and the response is amazing. I did have to use those electric insole warmers sometimes though

I can do any in-bounds run on any resort, and I've done some heli trips in BC and Alaska, but my riding is nowhere close to the terrain you do. Do you think your gear setup is good for someone just starting out? if not, what would you change and how would you dial it back? Unrelated question: how did you work up to riding so fast down steep couloirs? Is it just nerves? Is it something you specifically practiced? Love the videos. Hi! I think the Furberg big mtn can be a bit hard to ride if you are not used to the long turning radius. But the Freeride is very playful and if you do a lot of touring, the key equipment boots is a good option I think. If you ride a solid as much as your split, I think soft boots might be the way to go. Im on hard boots because Im touring 90% of the season, and the hard boots are very forgiving on my ankles and knees. Unrelated question: Ive been snowboarding since I was 5, and I've always loved going fast. So the speed comes very natural to me ;) Got to love some wind in your face eh :P Thanks! Also nice that more content is coming :) I have the disruptives as well and really enjoy the better edgehold on traverses in comparison to softboots - however riding feels way more “direct“ than in my softboots. When you are riding technical stuff, do you close the boot really tight or leave some room to have it more surfy?
Yeah with the hard boot the force from the foot/boot goes straight to the board and that's why its way more direct. I totally know what you mean. And yeah, I like my boots really tight :D
Awesome and informative video thanks for it!! I've been splitboarding for +/- a decade, on softboots until now, and same as you my ankles are starting to give out. This setup looks sweet, but is it possible to lock down the heel when you're in tour mode? Doesn't need to be bomber, but sometimes it's nice to ski short/ easy descents without needing to fully transition.

So do you have the 28.5/29 disruptive right? do they it fit the S/M phantom binding? On the websites I see the boots have 309mm sole length while the bindings fit up to 308mm, that 1mm is not a problem?

Yoo! I have only skied in Levi, but that's a long time ago. Since my boot is a snowboard boot, its really weird to ski with. The best option is a ski boot if you want to ski, and a snowboard boot if you want to snowboard :P :P :P
I have the julbo peak helmet and sadly the boa thing (size adjustment) ripped out after the first tumble, was wonder if u had similar problems. Anyway great video man keep it up!

Great video. This is my 2nd season riding the Key Equipment Disruptive boots and my main issue with them is that I never seem to be able to find a good setting for the velcro straps for the way down from the get go - I usually have to readjust after the first couple of turns. Have you had similar issues? If so, how did you solve it? At least I'm not seeing you stop to adjust the straps in your videos :)
Hi, No i don't have any issues with that. Often when I start touring I test the straps too see if they are tight enough, and then ill start walking. So when I'm on top ill just lock the buckles and I'm ready to go. After skiing the whole day in the resort, I might need to adjust them a little bit.
I would love one super duper light if I'm riding the lifts, but for touring I think its a bit much.. If I think I will need a airbag where I'm going, I won't go :P
Hey Krister, I bought the disruptivs two years ago, with great hopes but they won't fit me, two different boofitters would not touch them, because they didn't knew what kind of plastic was used... do you have any advise how to make them fit? Would like to leave my fisher travers at home... thanks for your vids!
Yoo! If you are not surr what plastic was used, just send them a message on instagram fro example and ask. I would just punch them out, get custom insoles and do some adjustment to the inner boot of needed 🙏

Just curious about the ride feel between the Karakoram bindings and the Phantoms ~ I'm definitely lighter, and not pushing as hard as you do, so I'm not quite as worried about breaking them.
The karakoram has a really good riding feel because they are so light and soft material. You should try them if you are not worried about breaking them 💪💪
I guess you tried the Phantom boots before. I never got them hard enough for the decent. What was your experience and comparison w/ the Disruptive, @kriskopa ?
They worked really good, but I just broke them all the time... :( I had some issues with my heel not being stuck while doing a toe edge turn. So I mounted a snowboard strap over the ankle wrist..:P Yeah I try to not go places I need crampons for the board:P
Are you concerned about having your avy transceiver in your pants pocket (which you gestured to) quite close to your backpack hip belt with the inreach/other devices?
No, I haven't thought much about that. I do have my Gopro there sometimes, but when I'm riding for example I have it on my head. Also, if I'm riding with a in reach, I often have it on my shoulder strap.

It takes 2 hands for me to crank down the toe bail lever on or off. Really tough to do if you’ve crashed in deep snow. I noticed in one of your videos that you can clip in with one hand! Hi! I guess Phantom boots are a backland with link lever? I have tried 3 different pairs of backlands yes. I have the small/medium bindings and I have one lever in the middle under the binding and one all the way out. Ill adjust more after using them for many hours :)
Yes the Phantom Slippers are based on the Backland but have a link lever, modified buckles, and most importantly a very different cuff. Seems like they have a lot of similarities to the Key boot. But anyway if you haven't ridden that boot it doesn't really matter! Anyway thank for the info on the bails. I'll mess with mine! @@kriskopa

Some touring boots have a reduced nose, to move the pivot point closer to your toes.

Yoo! I usually have a couple of carabiners with a sling at the bottom, and then the side straps at the top. It works fine :)

Doesn't that groove in the board collect ice that requires cleaning to put your board back together?
Yes it does, but its super easy to clean. Its a small effort to clean the board compared to the stiffness of the board afterwords.

Yo! The 26size is just what's on the website. Im a 28,5 in the boots and the S/M fits me really good:D

Yes the Phantom Slippers are based on the Backland but have a link lever, modified buckles, and most importantly a very different cuff. Seems like they have a lot of similarities to the Key boot. But anyway if you haven't ridden that boot it doesn't really matter!

A lot, it rides like a solid. I guess you are referring to the floor board tech?
