After John Lennon died, they went into his apartment and he had a jukebox with like 15-20 of his all time favorite songs on there, "Heatwave" was one of those songs.
He also loved Fontella Bass's Rescue Me as well as The Isley Brothers whose Twist & Shout & Shout The Beatles covered in the early days of their career.
There's an old BBC interview where Lennon and McCartney talk about Motown being a major influence on there music Paul even says he stole from the best , Funk Brother bassist James Jamerson.
As far as this guy is concerned the dance moves then were far sexier than modern skanks in their restraint. Check out the moves in the Crystals Da Do Ron Ron and the Supremes doing You Can't Hurry Love on the Ed Sullivan Show.
One thing Berry Gordy insisted from Motown artists is that they dressed sharp. The male acts were in suits and ties and the female acts in nice dresses. They always looked perfect. Also, Holland, Dozier and Holland wrote a huge number of the songs for almost all Motown acts.
This was an excellent choice for review, one of my favorites of all time. This song was true to its title. Martha and the Vandellas were a really interesting counterpoint to all of the other girl groups out in the 60s, because they were the only girl group I can think of to sing such rambunctious songs -- Heatwave, Live Wire, Dancing in the Street, Nowhere to Run. The early to mid sixties were dominated by much softer girl groups like The Supremes, The Shirelles, The Crystals, The Dixie Cups, and the like. You really won't hear this kind of energy from a female artist until Aretha Franklin in the late sixties and then The Emotions in the mid-70s.
This has to be one of the happiest songs ever.! I heard that Martha used to open the mail as she was a secretary at Motown - until someone said she should try singing ! Back in the day - Motown trained their artists in etiquette - that's why their moves are classy and a much bigger turn on in their innocence.
My old band opened up for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas in 1993. Such a kind woman. When I said, Mrs. Reeves, you don't know how much I loved your hits", she held her hand up and said, "Sweetie, Mrs. Reeves is my grandma, you call me Martha!"
borned in 47 and grew up in southern Ontario and close to cities like Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Buffalo, Cleveland and Montreal we got all the Motown music hot off the presses. This is where the Blues Brothers got their juice, right up till 63 when the Beatles and the British invasion occured. We were sold on Mo town and then a new paradigm erupted on the radios as the Brits flooded the airwaves with the Animals, the Kinks, the Stones, Moody Blues and Led Zeppline, Cream, Pink floyd. The explosion was heard round the world but we will always love Motown magic.
I saw Martha and the Vandella's 4x back in the day and they did "Heatwave" every time. Martha was a size 1 well into her 40's, so you can tell how tiny the Vandella's were as well. This cut was a hit twice, once in the 60's and again in the early 80's. This was always a big crowd stirrer. Notice how in the crowd some of the white folk are clapping on the upbeat. So funny.
While this came out in 1963, it was 'Dancing in the Streets' that got me fired up for Martha. If you liked this, Dancing will really get you. Them and the Four Tops are my favorite Motown bands. I saw the Four Tops in Dec 67' and they blew the roof off the Bushnell in Hartford headlining a 9 artist show. Notables included The Temptations, Five Satins and The Barons w/ Gene Chandler, Trini Lopez and Tony Orlando.
Their were two top motown girl groups ,The Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas.I was 14 years old when I heard this for the first time. The local top 40 station played all of the music of that day, playing song followed by the beatles, then by bob dy lan, then frank Sinatra..it was like that. You heard all of the exraordnary music of that time, coming at you from A.M, radio. It gave me an appreciation for all of tyhe music of that.time.I was very lucky. These memories are indelible.
This was from Ready Steady Go a Popular Rock & Roll Show in the 1960's. Their name Vandella was in honor of Della Reese and Van Boulevard. They weren't a Girl Group per se. Everytime Martha did a Show, she had to "Pay" her Vandellas. They also did Wishin & Hopin with The Late Dusty Springfield and they made history when they did the First Interracial duet. Heatwave was also featured in The Boys In The Band and Carrie. The UK Kids were more "loose" than their US Counterparts. The Kids grew up in a Rough Neighborhood, most of the time their fathers weren't around and their Mums worked either in Factories or as Barmaids but they loved American Blues beginning in the 1950's.
Holland-Dozier-Holland were the standard writers for many Motown songs. From Wiki: Holland-Dozier-Holland Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian and Eddie Holland. The trio wrote, arranged and produced many songs that helped define the Motown sound in the 1960s.
she was so important to Motown in its early days. she kept the place running smoothly as the secretary for I think a few years before she got her chance to sing for Gordy. I forget the exact circumstances of what led her to get the chance to sing.
Performers weren't afraid to have fun while they sang. Now everyone's worried about their "image." At that time, there were many female singing groups, many of which came from Motown. We loved listening to all of them!
It's hard to pick a favourite song--but if I had to make a choice, this would be it! I absolutely love it. I played that record over and over and over and over again!
Great to hest brough me back, It was a great time to be alive!!! What makes me carzy is when I see these clips and their singing to a all white audience, it had to pissed them off,but they didn't let that effect their performance!!!
Berry Gordy had an etiquette teacher for all of Motown's girl singers. Remember, these were 17-20 yr old young women, naive to most things outside their neighborhoods (we weren't savvy about things back then). That's why when you see any of the performances or interviews from that time frame, the women of Motown were always dressed, coifed and totally ladylike (classy). They were taught how speak properly and how to behave in public. Berry Gordy was a tyrant and a jerk in many ways, but in this regard he was spot on.
Look at the stylish young men and modest girls. Great music sung by talented classy young LADIES in the 1960s. I remember these beautiful young people well as I was one of them.
High school soph. Oh the memories. Loved motown back then and if I could suggest some of the Ronetts. She and I were "Walking In The Rain" ( our song) and my first girl.
A great time, must check out the other songs, and other groups, like the Marvelous, The Shirrels, songs like Mr. Postman, and dedicated to the one I love, and soldier boy. and Playboy!
Try two 'Soul Train' classics Millie Jackson's "My Man is a Sweet Man" and The Supremes "Stoned Love" (1973). And check out Don Cornelius's shirt! The 1970 version of "Stoned Love" on 'This is Tom Jones' is also worth a look as they keep the intro and the girls all look amazing.
Martha and the Vandellas - QUICKSAND / Nowhere To Run / Jimmy Mack The Velvelettes - Needle in a Haystack Kim Weston - Take Me In Your arms(Rock Me For. Little While) Four Tops - It's The Same Old Song
Love this Heatwave gets me thinking about all of them old great songs start thinking about Sun Records Sam Phillips all the artist he had like a Johnny Cash off one of the first album Sam Phillips released Johnny Cash and it is hot blue guitar single off the Record cry cry cry czcams.com/video/2b0wICesoZk/video.html and of course being in Memphis you realize Memphis has two kings the king of rock and roll and mr. BB King and he says czcams.com/video/E4tL-zeVRbk/video.html Everyday I Have The Blues
India, I can tell by the way you stumbled over it that you have no idea what '45rpm' means. That refers to the speed that your turntable needs to rotate to play a record properly. Mostly there were only two speeds, 45 and 33. Forty-fives were the smaller disks approximately 7" diameter. Usually referred to as albums, the larger 12" disks were played at 33 revolutions per minute.
What is the deal with pronouncing all of these great artists names incorrectly: En Vogue, J.Giles Band, Martha and the Vandellas, The Tramps “Disco Inferno”, to name just a few. These artist are paved the way for the artists of today whom names you do pronounce correctly. These trendsetters deserve to have their names pronounced correctly. If you can pronounce Lady Gaga correctly, sure you can take the time to pronounce Diana Ross correctly.
I don’t care that “Dancing in the Streets” is considered Martha and the Vandellas signature song, “Heatwave” is their best song. My mom loved the Linda Ronstadt version, but Martha Reeves and the Vandellas sings it better.

Its been 41 years to the day yesterday since he died
The lead singer has a tremendous voice--and listen to the background singers! Holy!
Well, here I am, 70 years old and re living my very much younger years.
These Philly groups were the best!!!
Well, here I am, 66 years old and re living my very much younger years. Motown rules.
Damn! hard to beat Motown. Great pick. they don't make music like this anymore. sad.
Thank god for Carole King!
As far as this guy is concerned the dance moves then were far sexier than modern skanks in their restraint. Check out the moves in the Crystals Da Do Ron Ron and the Supremes doing You Can't Hurry Love on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Because at the time looks mattered a lot more than they did now. He had no other choice but to dress them nicely if he wanted them to succeed.
@@Jocelyn_Jade That went for anyone in any profession. Everyone dressed better than they do now - even just to go to the store.
Thats when CLASSY was important, so much that we lost in the 60's.
I used to listen to them when I was a young girl. Thank you
Grew up in that era - Loved it!

One of the greatest songs ever.

Absolutely great Motown - music was innocent as we're the times!!

"Dancing in the Street." Martha and the Vandellas
I was late HS then early USMC during the Motown era. Saw the Supremes live in Okinawa. Great era - great music.
I was so lucky to be young when the motown soul music was all over AM radio, especially with all the hot-babes girl groups!!!!!!!!!
Yeah! Me too. What a great time for music.

The LEGENDARY Iconic Martha and her Vandellas ❤❤❤❤❤
Those little dances were because of a man named Barry Gordon, he always took care of his acts at Motown.
There was so, so much going on in the pop music field in the 60's.
Love your selections and reactions. Thank You....
she was so important to Motown in its early days. she kept the place running smoothly as the secretary for I think a few years before she got her chance to sing for Gordy. I forget the exact circumstances of what led her to get the chance to sing.
Please listen to the 4 Tops - Standing in the Shadows of Love
This song was used in the 1964 movie Nothing But a Man starring Ivan Dixon, Abbey Lincoln and Gloria Foster

From Passaic, NJ...across the river from where I grew up!
Performers weren't afraid to have fun while they sang. Now everyone's worried about their "image." At that time, there were many female singing groups, many of which came from Motown. We loved listening to all of them!

Love old Motown Thanks 2 the Funk Brothers;;;;;;$$$$$$____4 Barry ✌️
This performance is so refreshingly raw and unpolished. A whole different approach to soul back then.
Another classic
One of my favorite Motown songs. Please check out Kiss and Say Goodbye. Even better What Becomes of the Broken Hearted. Great reaction.
The Vandellas kicked BUTT! Rosalind Ashford & Annette Helton & Betty Kelly!!
India, The Motown Ladies were/are the bomb!
Berry Gordy had an etiquette teacher for all of Motown's girl singers. Great choice of song, but it's Vandellas, not Vandelias.
Class? Motown was all about class ... !

Back then you had to actually have a voice to cut it. Lots of booty shaking now to distract from meaningless songs and non vocals.
Wow, so much thinner than girls today.
