    Thanks for watching this. As an alpinist it's one of my favorite movies, and it's a real shame it never got the recognition it deserved. On the off-chance you get the urge to watch another mountaineering film I would recommend Meru (2015).

  • @Rmlohner
    @Rmlohner Před rokem +8

    Anyone interested by this film should definitely also look up the story of how Joe was brought to medical aid, which was quite an epic story in itself. The DVD special features also show how they were both brought back to the mountain for the first time since it happened, understandably causing Joe to basically have a PTSD flashback.

      I've always tried to request more obscure movies that you don't see reactions to, and maybe a lot of people have never heard of, to help them get more traction.

    Quite a few reviews of this one say that despite Joe Simpson being right there on camera telling his story, they were still wondering if he'd make it because it just seems so impossible. And definitely the best thing the film did is make absolutely clear that Simon had no choice but to cut the rope, as for nearly two decades he'd unfairly been a pariah in the mountain climbing community over it, despite Simpson himself always making clear that he fully understood it, and calling him "the man who saved my life."

  • @A-small-amount-of-peas
    @A-small-amount-of-peas Před rokem +10

    Saw this years ago when it was first broadcast and then a few years later somebody uploaded it to CZcams and the comments section was very depressing, the most upvoted comments were people slating the guy who cut the rope while people with ACTUAL mountaineering experience trying to explain that it was the only option left.
    That trend of people saying the most ignorant thing and people believing it never seems to go away.
    My compliments to your Patron for recommending this as it's an amazing story that I will have to rewatch soon

      I can't possibly understand anyone who can be angry at someone in a desperate situation like that. What do you expect him to do? There was no other option besides his own demise. People are truly narrow-minded.

    One of the few documentaries I've ever watched more than once. It's so intense and fascinating. It's wild watching the story unfold and the whole time you know they survive because they're literally on camera talking about it but it just keeps getting more and more impossible. Really sucks you in.

    I am so incredibly excited to see this reaction. I've always thought stories like these are the pinnacle of human innovation, triumph and horror and seeing people react to it for the 1st time is a pleasure. Loved this! I totally get how intense films like this are, but if you can stand it may I humbly recommend Meru (2015) and Everest (2015). Two films I adored that happened to release that year. Mountain climbing stories are wild and really give you that icy thrill of adventure in the comfort of your home.

    My step dad was a mountain climber in his 20s and 30s, he did the 3 peaks, Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scarfeld, and in 1963 climbed part of the K2 and found a human arm that had been ripped off via either a fall or avalanche he took it back to base camp but it started to thaw out ....it was a bit messy lol

      @janleonard3101 Před rokem

      @@Rmlohner I just finished watching the 2015 movie and I can see why Krakauer had a problem with it. He was portrayed as a self-centered loner, which I don't think is true. And there were things that were left out and/or glossed over, like Sandy Hill Pittman being short roped by Lopsang and how that affected the rope setting. But that's always going to be an issue with trying to fit everything into a 2hr runtime. It was visually gorgeous, though, and I think did a pretty good job of telling the story overall.
