Drawing a Golden Retriever Dog. Beginner Coloured Pencil Tutorial

  • This week I have drawn a Golden Retriever Dog on hot press watercolor paper with colored pencils.
    I wanted to draw this pet portrait with fewer layers, in less time and with less details than I usually would but I still wanted to achieve realism and a blend that would ensure that his fur would be soft and have depth.
    In this video I demonstrate how you can achieve realism in your animal drawings by focusing on shapes, contrast and values rather than trying to add lots of detail into your art.
    Materials Used
    Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils: amzn.to/39k8bF4
    Caran D'Ache Luminance Pencils: amzn.to/3Qw53XA

    Slice 10513 Manual Pen Cutter Tool amzn.to/3LglW5W
    Glassine Paper amzn.to/3yGTqpa
    Faber Castell Kneadable Eraser amzn.to/3BfT0GJ

    6:25 did you use any special tool to make the white fur filaments around the nose?

    • @TERESAJOYFINEART
      @TERESAJOYFINEART  Před rokem +1

      I used a ‘Manual Pen Cutter’ from the Slice Tool range to create the fine white whiskers around the nose. Hope this helps! 😊

      @@TERESAJOYFINEART It took me a while to buy a ceramic blade pen cutter. In my country/city this ceramic cutter is available as a Stanley rebranded version Stanley Ceramic Pen Cutter, but the actual product is the Slice cutter, even the Slice logo is engraved on the body. It works fine, thank You for the suggestion, but since it actually a scraper, it works best with heavy papers like your 300gsm 100% cotton Fabriano Artistico. It works OKish on 160 gsm paper, too, but you should be very careful not to ruin the paper. Is your experience similar? Thank You again.

      @@miklosnemeth8566 That's interesting! I did not realise that they were sold under a different Brand name in some countries. What country are you in? Yes, you are right, the Slice tool works better with some papers than others. When working on Watercolour paper, the Slice tool will only take the pigment off back to the very first layer of pencil on the paper. You won't want to go back past that first layer or you will damage the paper. It's important when working on watercolour paper to apply a good base layer of the colour that you want your highlighted area to be once you have used the Slice tool. Here is a video which might be useful czcams.com/video/qDjhW5qBmLY/video.html It shows how adding a base layer will make the Slice tool work better and also explains that the Slice tool will not work with all papers. I'm not sure if you ever draw on Pastelmat or Drafting film but the Slice tool will work on those surfaces without the need for the base layer. Hope this helps!

    Hi Theresa, your work is really beautiful and I'm so happy to have found your platform. I'd love to subscribe to your Patreon Fruition Level. Do you include any tutorials using Pastelmat and drafting film? These are surfaces I mostly use. Thanks for sharing so much information in such a gentle way on your videos 🙂.
