WATCH THIS NEXT ----> czcams.com/video/BIKC4rr6ETg/video.html Take a look at some of the best shots I've been able to capture with the Sigma FP thus far.
why is this video so underappreciated? And the whole channel? I think we all should try to boost the creator's stats by liking and commenting, guys. He is an amazing creator :)
I can't really understand why it took 3 years for this camera to be recognized as one of the best FF cameras out there, but I'm really glad people is noticing the power this platform has. Best 4K in that price range, in my opinion one of the best user interfaces you can have in a hybrid package like this, a monster in low light, one of the best digital grain you can have, all in under 2000 $. I bought it 2 years ago, I'm working with it in all my projects. You can take the 4K and upscale to 6K and no one would notice. You can take the 1080p and upscale to 4K and no one will notice. You have full flexibility in color grading and you can fix any casual mistake with an increadible ease. I just shot a short film where the only lights available were the practicals HPS lamps and I can't be happier with my results. It has incredible richness, vibrance and BALANCE in colors. And it has a greater color space capture than a Sony Venice (wtf?). People are finally discovering this camera and a lot of bad reviews and incredibly blind opinions are being firmly questioned. Data rate is huge in capture? You'll always have SlimRaw.
Well said. I’m just now realizing how great the FHD 100p is. I can barely tell the difference between that and 4k after super scaling in Resolve. Fantastic. And I just love the RAW controls for the cDNG in Resolve. The way the highlights get pulled down and the fact that you’re able to recover basically 3 stops in the shadows with little to no grain is just insane. And you said it - balance. Almost every shot comes out looking great with little to no work needed. Can’t wait to share what I’m shooting here in Thailand
I've worked with all the big cinema cameras in my day job. But the Sigma FP is the most exciting camera out there. It's a mini-Arri when it comes to picture quality. Good to see that people are starting to produce some serious content with it. I think the reason why it's so good, is that Sigma had no cinema line camera to cannibalise (unlike the other rivals) so decided just to put everything into this. If you're a quick shooter, then this is not the camera for you. If you're a movie maker who wants the best image going, grab 2 or 4 of these!
Well said! Definitely not in the point-and-shoot category but a nice option for those who want superior image quality in a manageable size. Thanks for watching!
As an industry professional I can only 2nd your thoughts exactly. Had a 6k Pro as well but ended up selling it as I hated shooting with it compared to the FP. It's an odd camera....but we're all a bit odd!
Very well said. Had the fp and sold it for the fp l since i do mostly stills vs videos. The image quality, as you put it, is just the right amount of everything, and aimed for a pleasing outcome. One thing worth mentioning, is RAW images are in DNG, not just the video RAW files. Very efficient workflow for Lightroom, with decent file sizes. On the iPad, i use LumaFusion, but alas, can’t import CinemaDNG files. I find your review refreshing, as you did not do a specs comparison, and instead surfaced how enjoyable it is to use that camera, which begs to be picked-up. Super easy to use, built like a tank, and i actually find the menu system very straightforward to use. The fp l has a slightly more responsive AF but still not recommended for video. And hard to pull off flash photography. I actually find the electronic shutter very appealing, and somewhat compensates for the lack of IBIS. I use my camera with sigma dg dn lenses, Leica M lenses, and the Voigtlander 35 f/1.2. Thank you for your real-world video of the fp.
I would be interested to know if you are happy with the upgrade. The fp l seems to have had a bad press, but I think it would suit me well for what I want, which is mostly photo (with ability to crop and still have resolution to spare), but some video (cinema dng to external ssd). Is it an issue having a 61MP sensor when most lenses can only resolve 10 - 40 MP? Does a 100% image on the fp-l suffer from any softness as a result of this? Thanks.
Agree with all you say. Have owned it since the week it was released. All the idiosyncrasies of this camera plus the steep learning curve is for its great colour science and stunning images. For this, it’s an absolute bargain.
I would also recommend a 360 action camera for the vacation. Like there will be moments where you just want to show the surroundings but don't want to whip out a whole cinema camera.
That's honestly probably gonna be one of my next purchases. I need something to capture what's in front of me not only for walking around, but for doing tutorials on camera and lighting setups. Do you have a particular brand that you would recommend?
Great video! sigma fp deserves way more love in a sea of other cameras that don't do actual video that well. Personally for me it was the only option for a true successor to the bmpcc og that I started with
Great video. I love this camera. Basically it’s a unique use case camera. But if you fit that it’s perfect. You forgot to add great in low light. Great for photography. And I love having different exposure set ups for video and photo at the flick of a clunky switch. I have the ef 28 f2.8 with IS and that in crop mode is a great combo. If you have the budget then the lumix 24-105 is a superb match. Oh and false colours and zoom focus are so well implemented too. Wait. It’s weather and dust resistant too. Oh and the lcd is very high quality.
You're absolutely right! I forgot to mention the dual base iso and superb low light performance. I could go on an on about this thing honestly. Perhaps I'll do a follow up and go further in depth 🤔 Thanks for the support!
Oh my gosh, much respect for traveling with a rig like this. You are brave, skilled ++. Be careful when you visit Thailand. I visited 5 years ago for a 2-month trip and I never was able to make myself go back, I'm still here. I have a lifehack for you because it sounds like you need it. GoPro has a $50/year cloud service with unlimited space. So, if you need a place to archive, it's what I'm using with my A7IV and my ungodly file sizes. I think will work for your ungodlier file sizes. I hope you guys have a blast in Thailand. It's safer than America here in terms of being robbed, but still, keep your gear on you. Don't even leave it in your hotel unless you are in a 5-star hotel.
Thanks for the tips! And I’ll look into that cloud service. I’m literally trying to work out how I’m going to store media while I’m there right now lol
@@DylColeman Oh your here? Awesome!! Yea, I mean I use OneDrive and on my family plan I have like 5 accounts to load 1TB/each. But, that goes fast. When I bought a GoPro 10 I got the cloud service free and for like $6 a month or $50 a year, I keep waiting for them to limit me but they don't. I even back up my security cam footage. There are no folders but you can search by date and it's visual like using Apple Photos.
I do agree the FP and L are very under rated. Having worked with black magic and other cinema cameras, the lack of different and more compact formats is one of its largest flaws. I was blown away with the versitility and data a BMPCC 6K has in h265. I find RAW overkill for 95 percent of the stuff i shoot, especially if just doing family stuff. Hopefully having other file format sizes does occur in the near future for the FP.
In my experience thus far, I find I have to often underexpose the image in order to avoid blowing the highlights. Haven’t done any serious tests though….
How do you only have 500 subs?! "What camera am I gonna be using" that bit totally sums up my feeling for every single event I wanna document 😭 and made me laugh so hard. Love from Aus!! Keep up the sick work
Haha, right?! Such a true story 😂🤣 I’m really glad you enjoyed the storytelling bits. Those are my favorite parts. And hello Australia! I really hope to be able to visit one day
Lol the cats love the camera. It’s nice to have them in the frame but annoying as hell to keep their fur off my wardrobe 😂🤣 Thanks for watching! And I really hope to be able to say the same about my fp after two years.
I’m so happy I got one, definitely a different experience. One of the things that makes it worth every cent is being able to shoot places that would normally restrict you if you had a bigger rig. I’ve been asked to leave with my BMPCC 6kPro and gone a few days later with the FP and looked like every other tourist. And… the image quality WOW. It does need a bit of love in post but the look… buttery doesn’t begin to describe it. Thank for the awesome post!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 🙂 And well said. It's such an unassuming camera that doesn't scream "I'm a videographer!" like bmpcc4k or 6k. It was perfect for our trip to Thailand and I find myself gravitating toward it over the bmpcc more often than not now
@@DylColeman it’s also a great photo camera even though it’s a little awkward compared to most mirrorless cameras. It’s forced me to think differently about how I take photos and I’ve created some really compelling images with it because it’s so unique.
@@DaneBrammage Nice. That was my other plan in getting this - get better at still photography. I've been progressing slowly in that area. Need to go on more photo walks with this thing!
@@DylColeman it’s a killer photo walk camera. I’ve shot at night at crazy ISO (20,000+) and even though it’s grainy it doesn’t seem to have that nasty digital noise look that kills most other cameras images. The images really hold up amazingly well.
Glad I found your channel! I bought a sigma fp a few weeks back and sadly haven't been able to devote much time to using it, but I have been keeping up on all of the buzz about. I can't wait to start putting it through its paces (especially in low light). Looking forward to more content from you
While I have the fp L, I agree both the fp and L are very underrated. Mostly because they do not fit the mold of what everyone thinks a camera should be. I am a photo enthusiast and love the small size and customizability of having an evf or not. Edit: Don’t forget Lumix has some great lenses that pair well with this camera since they are video focused. Also, of Leica and Sigma being part of the L Mount helps.
Great video. Thanks, and subscribed. I love a cinematography channel where the host is focused, intelligent, and professional, as opposed to those "dynamic" types who place their camera low on the table and gesticulate incessantly with their hands looking huge due to the annoying wide angle lens, and using every cliche expression there is (form factor, let's dive in, price point, make the image "pop", etc).
I have shooting one for the last three years and found it pretty fantastic. I got the Cine kit, so it was paired with the Ninja V. The camera pairs well with my Canon lens. I have been holding off on the EVF, but on my to do list in the next few months.
Good to hear that it pairs well with your Canon lenses. I've only tried it out with the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 via the MC-21 adapter and I've had good results as well. And I love the EVF, even though it's a little pricey. Since my goal is to keep the rig as light as possible, the EVF works great for me for a third point of contact, since I don't have the benefit of added weight from a proper rig and monitor. It's also just really fun to use lol
That's awesome! I'm a huge fan obviously, and I haven't even explored all the features on it to the fullest. I think I'll dive into making cinemagraphs in-camera soon
Thank you so much! That means SO MUCH coming from you. Your library of Sigma FP videos were my main resources in deciding whether or not this camera was right for me. Love your content. Love your style. Love your channel. Thanks for all the helpful videos 🙏🏾
@@DylColeman oh dude that’s awesome! I’m glad the channel has helped and has been a resource. It’s a great brand and great camera, I think you will grow to love it more. I subbed to see what’s next! (No pressure doesn’t have to be FP 😉, dig your vibe in general)
Hi, for my hobby I am recording audio and viedo (separately) for live performances of windbands or symphonic orchestras both indoor and outdoor. So I need a camera that's able to record continuously for at least 90 to 120 minutes. And it has to work completely unattended, that means I adjust it, set it to record an leave it until I am finished with playing in the band and can return to switch it off. I started with a Panasonic GH-2 (with modified firmware), then Pana G70 (equivalent to G7 outside of Europe). But it was annoying because the European version has a 30 min limit in recording time for video. Next I tried the BMPCC 4k, great video and about 6 h of recording possible in BRAW using a 1 TB SSD. But all settings are to be adjusted manually and the built in AE mode is underexposing heavily. So I'm very fine now with a Sigma fp and a Sigma 24 - 105 mm zoom in f/4. In DNG 10 bit I achieve 2 hours of recording time when using an external T7 SSD in 2 TB. Exposing in automatic mode works fine when set to - 1 EV, correcting this in post, most of the time without getting visual noise and preserving enough highlights. Negative issue #1: the SSD is warming up and when reaching about 40 °C it starts throttling. That occurs typically after about 20 to 30 minutes of uninterrupted recording. Throttling the write rate doesn't please the camera so it stops recording. To work around this I mount the SSDs to a heat spreader in aluminium and place them significantly below the camera. For the last 4 months this worked fine. Negative issue #2: powering the camera externally only works with a battery dummy adaptor, so I need to change from battery to the dummy every time I use it. And there is no backup power by the internal battery because it's not present then. With the BMPCC 4k that's much easier, there is a power connector to be fed by about 12 V DC and all works fine. And when the external power stops it continues using the internal battery. Negative issue #3: the DNGs transfer very slow when using windows. As a workaround I use the second output option in slimraw to write the slimmed DNGs simultaneously to both working and archiving drives. The BRAWs with dozens to hundreds of GB in one file copy at about 100 to 400 MBytes per second when using SSDs and USB 3. The DNGs drop to about 20 to 40 MBytes per second after very few seconds of quicker transfer. Positive issue with Sigma fp and BMPCC 4k: using the same color science (Gen 4) for DNG and BRAW results in nearly matched images, at least for my purposes. I'm not a pro colorist.... So thank you very much for the review, I'm checking your videos about color grading as well
Hey there! Thanks for sharing! I've never thought about using the fp for long-form recording such as you described but it's interesting to hear your experience with it. I know that some have had success actually buying and external recorder and shoot to BRAW with the fp. May help with file sizes and allow you to record for longer periods of time on similar capacity drives. I wonder if Sigma will come out with a camera that addresses a lot of your concerns at some point. Here's hoping 🤞🏾
Such an awesome video, story, tutorial, insight... I truly appreciate the casual honesty and tone. Very similar to the advice sought from a good friend that is knowledgeable on a particular subject. Keep it up!
Thanks so much! That means a lot. I love sharing my knowledge and genuine love for video production and tools, and to hear that it comes across as such really means the world to me 🙏🏾 Thank you! And thanks for watching 🙂
As soon as you mentioned 22gb min, I was like "pass," haha. I love my XT4 and the Sigma primes too much. Great video! I've also been curious about their cameras.
You popped up in my recommended and I was intrigued by the title. I see you are also a student of CZcams! I've been learning about the CZcams algorithm and how to be successful. You have a great title! Simple Yet Intriguing Thumbnail! And the pacing and storytelling is amazing. I know it must have been a lot of work putting this video together but it has the production quality of a Million Subscriber Channel! Great Job! Love seeing other small creators in my recommended. Hopefully you don't stay a small channel for long! :)
Wow, man, you hit it right on the head! Those are all things I've tried to improve upon and it's nice to see someone noticing the work and thought that's put in behind the scenes. I'm glad you liked the video and thank you so much for the support 🙏🏾
It's 2023 and I came across your channel. Do you reckon Sigma will release an updated version of the fp soon? And if they do and include IBIS, will it change the formfactor? Thanks
first off i really liked your video. one thing that frustrates me ist eh backdial of my fp does not work properly in picking up which direction im spinning. I have seen that you can get it replaced by sigma but you have to send your camera in and it takes 2 weeks and costs about 160€ . i feel like they should offer that for free since its their fault. i also use slimraw, another option would be to do a rough edit in davinci to recover highlights and shadows and then export in prores, but i don´t know how much you could actually save.
Sorry to hear about your troubles. That does kinda suck that you have to pay for something that sounds like a legit defect 😠 and I’ve heard of people having success with making exposure adjustments and then exporting to ProRes. It’s just a lot of work. SlimRaw has been solving my space issues so far. But we’ll see what happens when I’m capturing massive amounts of footage on our trip to Thailand
I have not used the electronic stabilization yet. I’ve still have a lot of things to explore. This, and really testing out the low-light capabilities are on the top of my list
I recently left the Panasonic S1 and went with the Sony A7IV. I do not regret that choice. For a short period I was looking at the FP because like you it checked a lot of boxes but the price you're paying for the extras, T5 drives, and eventual hard drive space it didn't make sense to me. However... I just saw a used FP on B&H I think for $950. Now for that price and a set of the Sigma apsc lenses. Now of they could only drop the FP sensor in the Sony A7SIV....
Right?!? The A7SIV seems like the closest thing to a perfect camera out there. I just couldn't swing the price for the body only, and then I'd need to buy a speedbooster to adapter all my canon glass, etc, etc, Luckily, I didn't have to buy too many extras for the FP. I have a bunch of T5s already that I've been using with the BMPCC4K, and since I have no plans to use this thing in a professional environment currently, I can forego some of the other much-needed extras like a full cage, handle, external battery and monitoring solutions, etc. Perfect fit for me, but I can see it easily missing the mark for so many
Awesome! I honestly can't believe the camera has been out that long and I only just heard about it a few months ago. Glad to see it's worth it after all this time. I'm thinking I'll be saying the same thing in two years 🥰
I've never had a chance to use it, but I've seen the communal praise and it was part of the motivation for me to try out the bmpcc4k. I don't really know too much about it. I'd be curious to hear how it holds up today? Do you still use it?
@@DylColeman i'm looking to buy one because I really love that "film look" that the camera gives naturally, the footage I've seen was outsanding. It doesn´t have the crisp 4k look, but still is beautiful. Also if you are curious, the ZV1 can deliver a outsanding quality too. I have it and it can be amazingly good. Love your video tho!
Question: To what point can you recover shadows/hilights to? 13/12.5 stops arent that impressive for full frame camera but from what I've seen cDNG can lift it up by 1 or even 2 stops. Is that true?
It is. I've actually consistently been able to recover 3 stops or more with great results. So much so that I consistently underexpose when I'm shooting at ISO 100. I'll have to make a video on it.....
Great video man. I couldn't agree with you more as this is one of my favorite cameras to use. I've owned the Sigma fp for a while now. This sleeper of a camera is the only one in the world offering DNG, ProRes , and Blackmagic RAW formats. Sigma consistently adds firmware updates with great new features that increase the usability of this unit. FYI... something Sigma doesn't advertise is that this sensor appears to be dual gain; cleaning up nicely at ISO 12,800. Don't underestimate its photo capabilities either, the images are tack sharp with excellent dynamic range too.
It's my understanding that you have the option to record in BRAW if you're using an external recording device. You can't record internally or even to the SSD in BRAW, unless I'm mistaken.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I love the photos out of this thing as well. Interesting about the cleaner image at 12,800. I'm gonna test that out
That’s correct. For the Canon EF glass I’m using the Sigma MC-21 converter. For the Nikon there’s an additional adapter ring in place to change the Nikon mount to EF, and of course with that older lens I’m controlling both focus aperture on the lens itself.
Thank you, my friend! Really appreciate that. My whole goal is to help other fellow filmmakers and creators find tools and learn skills that inspire them, so it means a lot that you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏾
I’ve been wanting to direct and get into filmmaking full time. After trying the Sony A7C, it was good but was left wanting. No soul or true execution in SOOC footage. I’ve been debating the Sigma or the BMPCC cameras. What do you guys think? I wanted great results out of camera. On the smaller compact side, with potential to rig it out.
This is a tough one. I love the Sigma fp, but I'm also seeing fantastic stuff from cameras the like the Sony FX30 (something I may have purchased instead if I took my trip to Thailand a couple months later) and A7S series. At the end of the day, these are just tools. If either the Sigma fp or the BMPCC4k give you the type of results that you can't live without I would go for one of those cameras. But know that there are OTHER options that will give you just as good results (very subjective opinion), often even MORE tools and features (stabilization, continuous autofocus, more straightforward Post workflow) to make it easier to create content solo and/or on a budget. Maybe rent or borrow a two of the top models you're considering to really put them through their paces in your own workflow and shooting environment to see if they're right for you. It's a tough question, and really only one that YOU can truly answer
I'm liking your style as I watch some of your videos. You've got a great voice and editing chops! I wanted to like this camera, but once you rig it up like you need to, it's no longer tiny. If only it recorded those nice images internally! But that's the Achilles heel.. it doesn't. You need that external SSD and cable, adding two points of failure. And even then the files are ridiculously huge. The storage format of one file per frame just sucks. I'd need to add a transcode step just to make media management reasonable. The ergonomics also leave a lot to be desired. The EVF covers both the HDMI port and USB charging. There's only one thumb dial unlike basically every other camera that exists. And the non-articulating screen is as annoying as the BMPCC4K... basically demanding an external monitor. I say all this because I really hope Sigma can improve on the obvious disadvantages in their next model. Instead I bought a Lumix S model, which makes life a joy. No need to rig it out at all. Articulated screen and EVF included. IBIS makes life a joy. That's an essential feature for me. As a bonus I also get a fantastic stills camera (with mechanical shutter so I don't worry about light strobing). Also amazing image quality, with perhaps the best colours I have seen. (Though I wouldn't knock the Blackmagic.) EDIT (again): Forgot to mention much better battery life.
Yeah there’s a lot that could be improved. I also hope Sigma takes suggestions like these to heart in improving the model for any future iterations. I myself have started using accessories from Dark Power Labs that improve on some of the things you mention above. I have a drive holder that fits right over the EVF, so I’ve been able to ditch the T5 and cable for a tiny 2 TB. Absolutely awesome.
Really great overview, thanks! I purchased it as a writer/director who wants to get more into technical knowledge and I love the soul of the camera! I feel it is harder to "get into" without a real autofocus but it is pushing me to really learn to use it manually, really like the learning curve it is pushing the user to!
Me too! I think that’s very underrated aspect of the camera. It forces you to get good at exposing an image properly and nailing focus as well making you think about the worth of every shot due to the file sizes. Almost like film in that way lol. Love it
@@DylColeman Re-watching the video I have a stupid question :) You attach the velcro at the bottom for the sdd, but how do you then attach to a gimbal/tripod? Or you just don't? Thanks!
@@HusoBasti Good question! I actually attach the gimbal baseplate to the 1/4 20 screw point that's on the MC-21 converter and not on the camera. Suprisingly, the Samsung 1 TB SSD fits right inbetween the gap left between the plate and the body of the Sigma fp (kind of a perfect fit lol) I've since started using a smallRig SSD holder attached to the bottom of the Sigma fp to hold my SSD, which I'll definitely have to remove if using with a gimbal. I've only put it on a gimbal a few times while I was in Thailand.
I’ve had my fp sitting in my closet since it first came out, because I’m just an amateur and was busy with other hobbies. Taking a trip to my old town of NYC next month, so trying to get up to speed with it. 1) The EVF wasn’t available at that time, but if better handheld stability is the only reason you mentioned for using it, for 700 bucks!? There are many cheap ways to do that. But yeah, I understand the adjustable EFV allows all POV’s. But in NYC, do you really want to take your eyes completely off the undesirables walking all around you? 2) I love the compact size, but really? How compact is it, considering I’m only taking one lens…Sigma’s 24mm 1.4? Or anyone taking a zoom? 3) Yeah, those function dials are a real pain. The QS (Quick Settings) button/menu is a lifesaver in this regard. 4) I like it very much, but hope I live long enough to learn how to best use it. Even though a beginner with cine, I’m still shooting 12-bit Cinema DNG to a T5, but probably in FHD and not UHD. I have no problem spending the time learning Resolve to work on these files, because there’s plenty of room next to my keyboard to fit my beers.
All good points. For me, the EVF is the most “fun” things about using the camera. Maybe just don’t use it in a bad part of town without keeping your other eye open? 😂 Added stability is also a HUGE bonus for this camera though, and a good way to add it without bulking it up too much. Without the EVF though and a very minimal lens, this thing can be truly pocket-sized. And yeah, learning the ins and outs of the post process in Resolve is probably the most time consuming part. Perhaps make those beers some tall boys 😏
@@DylColeman I have the other viewfinder, and God knows why I bought THAT. Also have an M42 adapter and some great old glass. Even considering just taking my Russian Helios 44 because of the funky bokeh, and leaving the large glass at home. The Sigma 24 1.4 is a beast!
@@Ira88881 I bet! I have a Helios 44-2 but I haven’t shot too much with it on the fp. Been using it recently while shooting footage of my daughter and, like you said, the bokeh is wild
Thank you so much 🙏🏾 Really appreciate the compliment and thanks for watching! I couldn’t do it without my wife - her support and willingness to participate is everything 🥰
Hi Dylan I've been subscribed for a while to your sigma fp channel. I also have a sigma fp and recently I've been asked about timecode. I wanted to know if you have any experience syncing timecode into the sigma fp either with tentacle sync or deity or another timecode system ? Do i need a 3.5mm splitter to record both timecode and a scratch track at the same time? thanks
Hey there! Thanks for the sub 🙏🏾 Unfortunately I don’t have any experience with running or syncing timecode on the fp 🫤 someone like Anson & Co. may have a video on that on his channel not sure. He’s gone in depth on so many aspects of the fp so it wouldn’t surprise me if he covered that topic already. Check him out for sure
Hey great video. Just wondering if you could give us an update on your transition from the pocket 4k to this camera. Hows it goin so far? Do you prefer to bring your fp out more than the 4k for everyday use? Has the fullframe lenses/camera impresses you more (bokehlicious) compared to the pocket? Im using the 4k and planning to go in a trip so im currently looking for options. Thanks in advance!
Hey there! Thanks for watching 😊 To answer your questions, I barely take the 4k out anymore. It’s become my “studio cam” of sorts, as I use it to record the A roll for every CZcams video I make. The fp is the perfect compact travel cam for me. Now, with my Dark Power Labs SSD cage, 2 TB drive and my fast Lexar SSD, I can record all the footage I would ever need in any format in a daily outing or on a short weekend getaway. The only limitation then is battery life, but the bmpcc4k isn’t much better there in terms of internal battery life. And yes, I love the full frame. I’m slowly building up a new collection of appropriate glass, but I’m in love with the full frame image. At the same time, I still love using the bmpcc4k. It’s just not as practical for me in many cases.
6:55 I was JUST about to ask you about the stills... I'm thinking of getting it for that reason alone. I have the S52 which I use for video work but, I hate shooting stills on it. No reason really, just not feeling it lol. The Sigma always had me thinking..
I still don't use it that much for still, but they have just have just as much character as the video that comes out of it. The couple things I have heard are that some photographers miss a physical shutter, and that the lack of really good autofocus can be a challenge.
Not sure. Haven’t tried it yet. I assumed the no RAW recording at 4k was because of the data transfer rate, but I would think you could record RAW at 1080 at least. I’ll have to investigate
I need to do a review of my Sigma FP. I just got it last week, so I’m still learning it. I bought it so I can put it on my Crane M3 gimbal. It works great on that with the 45mm Kit lens. You just have to come up with a way to mount your T5. I also have a wireless Go mounted on it. Without the gimbal, I like using the Canon IS lenses with it. especially the 16-35 F4, and the 24-105 F4. I’m probably going to pick up the Sigma 20mm F2 eventually. I have an A7S3, but I hardly use it. It’s too easy! I kind of like working for my shots. plus the colors on the FP are a whole lot better, but I ain’t getting rid of my Sony any time soon.
So many things you said resonate with me. I love working for my shots. And you'll be interested to know that I tested out flying the fp on my Zhiyun Crane 2S and because I use the MC-21 converter, which comes with an extra base plate mounting screw point that protrudes beyond the bottom of the camera a very slight bit, I was able to sneak the T5 in the gap left between plate and the actual camera body. Kind of a perfect setup. I'll be testing out in Thailand for real shortly. Thanks so much for the support and can't wait to hear about YOUR experience with the fp
@@Alexzarfatifilms It was a mission - it was a few hours per A-roll setup with the lighting, making sure I was happy with the look via a quick grade in Resolve, and then the actual recording of the script. Product shots with the blue background were a mission cause it was nearly impossible to keep the glass table clean, and then the b-roll list just kept growing as i got further and further into the edit. It took me 2 and half weeks of working on it almost everyday. There was a lot of learning and figuring out the format, graphics and edit on this one which I hope will mean faster execution in the future.
Unless I misunderstood you, I was surprised when you said that the crop mode was an unusual feature. Pretty much every full frame mirrorless camera has a “super 35” / APS-C crop mode for video. Often times, the image quality is better than the full frame mode, depending on the sensor and how it’s handling scaling the resolution to a video standard like 4K. Anyway, great video, and an awesome insight into a stealthy was to use this pretty unique camera. Personally, I would find the file sizes and battery life to be issues which would frustrate me, which is a shame because otherwise it looks like such a fun tool!
Ah, gotcha! Well don’t feel bad about being excited, it’s a great feature to play with! Because you’re getting 4K either way, you get to zoom in with the same lens without losing any resolution. It means any lens you have attached now has two focal length options at any time!
After watching this video I subbed. Bit of a tech nerd myself (got a Sony A7 & Voigtlanders, FDR-AX100 camcorder and a Fuji X100). The Sigma I wasn't aware of, though do know the brand. It looks like a lot of fun (and file size!). It seems that you relate to the Sigma as I do to my Fuji or A7 & 35mm f1.4. For bokeh the A7 with Voightlander is the way to go but for street the Fuji is magic (the way others react to the camera).
I’ve been getting more and more into street photography as well. One of my main goals is to improve my composition. I love hearing about “dream” lens and camera pairings like that. For me the Nikkor 35mm and the Fp might be just that
I really like the ideas in this video, you really think things through, the comparison of image quality and the way we gonna work and the environment we gonna be in. I am trying ot find a new camera after my GH3. I like to ask you or anyone here that worked with both camcorders and cinema cameras around 1500-3500 dollar range can you please advice me I am looking for a camera for documentary work, but I am not into "news style work", instead I want to create poetic mood documentaries and sometimes use long exposures of people and streets to create blur and symbolism... I been looking into the AG CX10 as well as the HC X2.. I also looked into the Sigma FP and the Black Magic pocket cameras, both the 4K and the 6K can any of these cameras do long exposure like the Russian photographer Alexey Titarenko did, but now in video/cinema camera work? so that one see people and traffic dragged out like smoke in a symbolic way ? I like what the Russian photographer did in his way of symbolically express people in protests, and want to do something similar but in motion. look here and please when anyone that really know cameras got some time please get back to me and let me know what cameras would be great for this and for documentary work of catching people in protests, making them stand out like in Street photography but now in motion, video/cinema cameras vs camcorders, and tell me which cameras can do this way of filming that this photographer did in the 1900 century with still photography. czcams.com/video/XHOfLvJgJ2Y/video.html thanks! I like to catch movements on the street but in a nice way, not make news gathering stuff, but poetic street documentary work.
Interesting review, great presentation, thanks. But I don't think this is the best camera for me, a beginner, due to the lack of both AF and IBIS, and since I'm not a pro who's accustomed to FF, I'm thinking the new Sony FX30, with the much cheaper array of APS-C lens options, might be the way to go. Subscribed.
Thanks for the sub! I've been seeing all the info coming out about the new FX30. Seems like a perfect entry-level cinema camera option. I'm honestly very interested in that as well 😖Too many cameras!
Great montage man..the sigma fp definitely needs some love but I personally preferred the s5 over it..u dnt need to buy all these extras for the same price and dynamic range seems to be better on the s5 and it got ibis too. For the I price I saw you pay it with evf, the a7iv would nt have been better ? You could add ur ef glass easily for 100$ or 20$ ish for these vintage glass :) Also 1min for 22gb is insane when you see what s5 vlog codec can produce with just 150mbps lol so on the long run this camera is going to cost a lot just for storage. You will always think twice before recording a moment for a long time, asking yourself if its worth the disk space lol
Yknow it’s funny you mention what the limited space does to you in considering what to shoot and what not too. It’s part of what attracted me to the camera. Now, it almost feels as precious as film yknow? Which adds an even greater significance to what you DO choose to shoot. As far as the A7IV and S5 goes I can’t tell you how much I went back on forth on those options. What it came down to wanting to make the jump to full-frame, the comparable image quality to the bmpcc4k, how small and compact it actually is, and also just how weird it is. I actually like learning curves and the methodical nature of figuring out how to use and mastering a piece of gear. All of this things added up to the right choice for me.

Take a look at some of the best shots I've been able to capture with the Sigma FP thus far.
why is this video so underappreciated? And the whole channel? I think we all should try to boost the creator's stats by liking and commenting, guys. He is an amazing creator :)
Exactly what I though. Here's is my algorithm friendly comment
@@PeterMaleh And here is mine !
Agreed! 100%
Man, you are a STRIKING resemblance of the young Denzel Washington. You even have the similar mimics.
Great video by the way!
Instant sub!!!
Thank you! And you’re actually not the first person to tell me that….
Your channel is so underrated, thank you for all your content!
You’re very welcome 🙏🏾 Thanks for watching!
It doesn't work with RAW files unfortunately.
@@xFatal1ty17x I just recommend it for video.
Insure your equipment.
Hopefully having other file format sizes does occur in the near future for the FP.
ahhh it records 10 bit color in h265? No color banding?
@@chrisw5742 if you don't push it hard and shoot for metering to be zero. Over and under expose more than 1 stop and it's like any other camera.
I really hope to be able to visit one day
Really love seeing your thought process on why you purchased this camera!

You made me know for the first time about this camera outside of the giant manufacturers of camera business. Thanks man, really!
That’s huge! I’m glad you found it useful. And you’re welcome! 🙂
Cat image at end, meow' Great vid; 2-years w/ fp myself, luv it'
Lol the cats love the camera.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I picked up 3 new "I" series F2 lenses and they are perfect for the Fp and my S1.

I so want to try this camera! And you can get it used for around a grand. Thanks for the review!
You’re very welcome!
Its for people that like to sit and edit for hours and want to run light. I love the custom button setup.
I DO love to edit…
Great video. Thanks, and subscribed. I love a cinematography channel where the host is focused, intelligent, and professional, as opposed to those "dynamic" types who place their camera low on the table and gesticulate incessantly with their hands looking huge due to the annoying wide angle lens, and using every cliche expression there is (form factor, let's dive in, price point, make the image "pop", etc).
Thank you! Appreciate the sub and praise. I worked really hard on those frames
Bought one at release and have just been in love with it ever since.
That's awesome! I'm a huge fan obviously, and I haven't even explored all the features on it to the fullest. I think I'll dive into making cinemagraphs in-camera soon

@@Ansonandco Appreciate the sub, my friend 🙏🏾 I'm headed to Thailand next week with the Sigma FP so expect to see some beautiful stuff very soon
Keep it up!

It's 2023 and I came across your channel. Do you reckon Sigma will release an updated version of the fp soon? And if they do and include IBIS, will it change the formfactor? Thanks
I honestly have no idea, but those are ALL things I hope for lol
Thanks Dylan - that was an incredibly useful review of the FP. And beautifully shot too!
Thank you! I appreciate that. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
first off i really liked your video. one thing that frustrates me ist eh backdial of my fp does not work properly in picking up which direction im spinning.

I use it with the blackmagic assist monitor to record BRAW. It’s a rig at that point but I like the image and that I can throw it in a gimbal easily.
Have you used the electronic image stabilization (EIS) in video? If so, what was your experience? Is it effective and does it affect image quality?

Perfect fit for me, but I can see it easily missing the mark for so many
Nice vid. And you have a great on-camera presence.

What are your thoughts on the bmpcc orginal? That could be a nice option too.
Great video! We appreciate the support
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank YOU for making such an awesome product 🙏🏾💪🏾🔥
Does it has BRAW as well ?
It's my understanding that you have the option to record in BRAW if you're using an external recording device. You can't record internally or even to the SSD in BRAW, unless I'm mistaken.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I love the photos out of this thing as well. Interesting about the cleaner image at 12,800. I'm gonna test that out
@@DylColeman Correct
BRAW with the Assist 12G
ProRes RAW with the Ninja V
@@DylColeman Yes, you're correct. I don't own the Blackmagic ext. recorder but I do have the Ninja V which works for ProRes RAW.
How did you use the canon and Nikon lens? Was it adapter then manual mode
That’s correct. For the Canon EF glass I’m using the Sigma MC-21 converter. For the Nikon there’s an additional adapter ring in place to change the Nikon mount to EF, and of course with that older lens I’m controlling both focus aperture on the lens itself.
great video breakdown and explanation
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I have known about the Sigma Fp from the moment it was released.
Wish I knew about it earlier
Looks Amazing
Super camera review
Stay safe and healthy
Big thumbs _up 👍
Quality video man! As a fellow filmmaker I'm glad I stumbled across your channel.
(Though I wouldn't knock the Blackmagic.)
EDIT (again): Forgot to mention much better battery life.
Amazing video!!!! Can't wait for your next review!!
Thank you! Will probably try and review some lenses next
Great review! Thanks.
You’re welcome!
Thanks for sharing about this camera I've never heard of! Definitely interested in this one or the Sony FX30.
Nice review.
Greetings from Tokyo 🗼
Thank you!
Been using it recently while shooting footage of my daughter and, like you said, the bokeh is wild
i am so impressed with your video documentary, love it, thanks to your wife's support. thanks for sharing your wisdom.
@@DylColeman thanks Dylan I've messaged Anson and said he hasn't used it either. But i found out how to do it now. thanks for the reply
Great review! If the Sony ZVE1 was available at the time of your purchase, would you have considered it over the Sigma FP?
Absolutely. I say the same about the FX30, which came out weeks after I purchased the fp
Excellent video. Question it says no internal raw recoding but I thought you could record Raw internally in 1080p? Thank you.
Not sure. Haven’t tried it yet. I assumed the no RAW recording at 4k was because of the data transfer rate, but I would think you could record RAW at 1080 at least. I’ll have to investigate
rolling shutter this thing has a readout speed as sluggish as the original A7s
Incredible video my brother! I can't wait to see more content from you! I love the way you edit your videos, I love 1:43 and on so dope!
Thanks, dude! And I'm glad you liked the little storytelling bits. I'm trying out new things lol
@@DylColeman seriously it was great. I feel like this definitely took some time to put together. How long did it take you to shoot?
@@Alexzarfatifilms It was a mission - it was a few hours per A-roll setup with the lighting, making sure I was happy with the look via a quick grade in Resolve, and then the actual recording of the script. Product shots with the blue background were a mission cause it was nearly impossible to keep the glass table clean, and then the b-roll list just kept growing as i got further and further into the edit. It took me 2 and half weeks of working on it almost everyday. There was a lot of learning and figuring out the format, graphics and edit on this one which I hope will mean faster execution in the future.
@@DylColeman Bro no lie it was an incredible video and If you could put out one of those a week you would be a CZcams star lol
Love your grading and visual storytelling. Subscribed.
Thanks! I put a lot of work into those two things specifically. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I did not know that. This is my first full frame camera ever. Now I feel a little silly for being so excited about it lol
Ah, gotcha! Well don’t feel bad about being excited, it’s a great feature to play with! Because you’re getting 4K either way, you get to zoom in with the same lens without losing any resolution. It means any lens you have attached now has two focal length options at any time!
i like the size nice and small but them files are way too big 22gb for 1min footage damn
It's cumbersome. I wish I could use it to record some of my A-roll for my videos but it's just not practical 😕
I like to ask you or anyone here that worked with both camcorders and cinema cameras around 1500-3500 dollar range can you please advice me
I am looking for a camera for documentary work, but I am not into "news style work", instead I want to create poetic mood documentaries and sometimes use long exposures of people and streets to create blur and symbolism...
I been looking into the AG CX10 as well as the HC X2..
I also looked into the Sigma FP and the Black Magic pocket cameras, both the 4K and the 6K
can any of these cameras do long exposure like the Russian photographer Alexey Titarenko did, but now in video/cinema camera work?
so that one see people and traffic dragged out like smoke in a symbolic way ?
I like what the Russian photographer did in his way of symbolically express people in protests, and want to do something similar but in motion.
look here and please when anyone that really know cameras got some time please get back to me and let me know what cameras would be great for this and for documentary work of catching people in protests, making them stand out like in Street photography but now in motion, video/cinema cameras vs camcorders, and tell me which cameras can do this way of filming that this photographer did in the 1900 century with still photography.
czcams.com/video/XHOfLvJgJ2Y/video.html
thanks!
I'm honestly very interested in that as well 😖Too many cameras!
i am sub to ur channel, very cinematic and honest review
Thanks for watching and thanks so much for the sub!
Great Video👍 from someone who understood the Sigma FP !!! ✌
Thanks for watching! When you know you know, right?
great video! I've been looking at picking up the fp l
Thanks! I'm curious, did you ever pick up the fp L? If so, how has your experience been with it?
Great video, Dylan. How do you use EOS glass on it? EOS -> L adapter?
Hey there! Thanks for watching 🙏🏾 You are correct. I use the MC-21 adapter that Sigma makes. Works great.
Thank you for the great content!
You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it 😁
This was great. I feel like buying it and I’m not a videographer! 😂 keep pushing bro!
Thanks, James! 💪🏾
Great looking video for a great looking gem.
You could add ur ef glass easily for 100$ or 20$ ish for these vintage glass :)
Also 1min for 22gb is insane when you see what s5 vlog codec can produce with just 150mbps lol so on the long run this camera is going to cost a lot just for storage.
@@DylColeman Exactly why I want one too. I have the S5 and use it more than my A7S III. I just need the FP for the very reasons you say.
I have one and I enjoy using it. The EVF let’s you get cool ground level shots really easily. I call it kitty perspective.
Haha! I like that one.
Good, measured review and great delivery.
Thank you! I really tried to make it well-rounded review and acknowledge both pros and cons. Thanks for watching
