i think hetfield is a smartest composer/writer of the 3. he isn't a virtuoso like megadeth players, but he's an impresario with better melody and timing.

if i were to take a psychedelic like acid, listen my own music, and find that i wrote the last solo of holy wars, i would be forever self-conscious of my ideas as a musician. honestly worse than a lot of kirk hammett stuff.
he also has a trend of being predictably chromatic in his material. for instance, that harmony in five magics doesn't sound bad, but needs a lot more personal touch. that one interlude in hangar 18 after the intro riff is another example of this.
at least when metallica does it, it has a trademark sound that is catchy. take for whom the bell tolls' chorus riff. it's both chromatic, and predictable, but it has the band's distinct sound written all over it, and it's catchy af.
do any of his harmonies really compare to james'? none of them imo even remotely reach the fight fire with fire melody. honestly, compare most dave solos to james'. James' solos are even better despite having no technicality. take mop bridge solo... absolutely genius.
for technical solos, i prefer dimebag's approach because he uses it as a vent to let out strong emotion. chris broderick on the other hand is a horrible guitarist who is probably the most technically advanced i've ever seen... how sad.
peace sells solos from dave on the other hand had such direction, drive, and vision. wake up dead outro, and good mourning black friday solos are insane!

James Hetfield is a true musician, singer and Poetic lyricist. He can play unique, beautiful clean acoustic guitar picking and is sparing with his strumming. He also plays lightning fast and accurate down picked rhythm with memorable riffs and a signature chugg using technicality sparingly to great effect in his riffs to better serve the heaviness whilst still being technically impressive. He is also a great song writer and arranger, James also writes and plays interesting leads that are memorable. James is also a beast on the drums and can play the piano. He also has an amazing front man presence on stage and has kept his ego and pride in check rather well over the past 20years. Dave is primarily a rhythm guitar technician, held in high regard for this fact. His song writing is solid and serves his technical prowess regarding rhythm while his leads are good they are not in the league of a virtuoso and his singing is simply poor. James is the more complete musician in my opinion, he is able to match Dave's technical rhythm playing ability, only he doesn't write as Technical riffs as Dave on average. The only things Dave has over James is his gift for writing very intricate riffs and being a more proficient performer on leads, apart from that, James can do everything Dave can do and more as a musician.
I know the difference between you guys is perfection with Dave a perfectionist and James and the guys seeming to lack what they had years ago you can see it in there face there eyes of Metallica that the drive isn't there anymore and that's totally understandable some people just change like I did late in life I have a driving force in me but I'm 61 how long could I possibly think that I could do something so hard and impossible? But I did I'm really ready to know if I have what it takes 😮 thanks you guys for being part of my inspiration to live by ❤❤❤

💯 % facts here my friend. Clearly Dave and Cliffs contributions are what defined their early sound. Metallica is nothing but a glorified cover band. Dave's success post Metallica proved he was EVERYTHING....

Too many people deny that. Most people never heard what metallica sounded like before Dave, they were a cover band that hadn't written any of their own music, everything on Kill'em All was Dave's, and Metallica continued to use what Dave had written all the way through Master of Puppets, and even some on And Justice for All, but listen to how different tye Black album is, that's because they used up what Dave had written and they were on their own.
@daved4120 Metallica had recorded a demo of Hit the Lights before Dave ever joined the band... so yes their was original material written along with James starting to write seek and destroy before Dave joined. Dave wrote a bit on killem all but not all of it was daves lol they have always listed him in the credits for the albums from what I remember.
Dude, mustaine wrote almost everything Metallica used for their first 4 to 5 albums, they even credited him with most of it. One, literally ONE song on kill'em all was credited to James, it was motorbreath., the reast was Dave mustaine. James did an interview 6 years after they booted him from metallica admitting that Dave was the best music writer they ever had, he was "instrumental to metallicas sound". That was published in thousands of articles.
Except none of that's true because James had written 3 songs before Dave joined and most of kill em all is James's music. @@daved4120

Dave HELPED write SIX Metallica songs in TOTAL. 2 of those songs were no more re than one riff. Where do you get this absolute wrong info from.
