With the "Austrian Oak" himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, looking on, the 10 competitors began Saturday's competition with this classic log press event. The field included both the American and British log lift record holders (Bobby Thompson and Luke Stoltman, respectively), so Day One standouts Martins Licis, Oleksii Novikov, and Rob Kearney would need to do their best to keep pace in the points chase.

@@BuJammy That is terrible. It looked like when he went down, his knee wasn't low enough below the pads and the log came down on the left knee as well... If he said it's probably career ending, he may not work his way back for another attempt at the Arnold unfortunately.
Yes. Anyone who watched this fully, I would hope, has Caron in their thoughts to recover. Having both quads torn, as Bu Jammy mentioned, it seems like he's definitely not competing anymore after this event.
According to his Facebook page he tore his quad tendons and is already out of the hospital.

Just an update - per JF's doctor, he actually didn't break his ankle. Double quad rupture and banged up right knee is still accurate.

Before watching this comp I knew that JF had an career ending injury, but I did not know how and when. I was almost looking away during the back squat, fearing he would rupture half his body under that load. When that did not happen I thougt I was safe until the frame carry...
A whole lot of the same muscles you're using for stone to the shoulder. Martins may have been strategic, seeing minimal room for improvement here and making sure he had gas in the tank for the stone.
So sad for Caron 😢😔😔😭he must recover and come back STRONGER

@@kasperv967 damn that's a bummer. But he's pushing 40 and time is not on his side. But as Chewy says about BJJ "we're not playing patty-cake here". They are doing insane things and sometimes things go pop.
@@bmstylee "time is not on his side" This is the norm for a lot of people but JF was literally getting better as he aged, man. Sometimes we forget how dangerous these lifts are just because of how strong and conditioned these top guys are but apparently he tore his quad before the log even fell on him and it caused huge knee damage.
I imagine these guys only having 8-10 weeks to condition themselves for a squat maxout probably isn't the best way to handle these events and only leads to a lot more potential injuries, especially when the Arnold Classic has the heaviest and hardest events.

What would have caused JF injury? I would have thought you would get a quad rupture on a squat or something not a log lift.. such a shame he is a Great strongman, wish him a speedy recovery

I just don’t understand having two pressing events, and back to back no less. Could’ve made this a deadlift event. No rules against having a squat AND deadlift event.
And people jumped on me when I said the events weren't actually set up very well for Martins. He generally doesn't make top 2 in pressing events.

How could JF squat that enormous weight, and then tear his quads trying to log lift half that weight?
Quads aren't recovered from that massive squat and a mistake with that kind of weight could potentially kill you. It's sad but easy to see how it happened

Sad to say but JF's career is over. At his age coming back to his current level is almost impossible. Wish him well on his road to recovery.
