when you consider the fact that as cells get wider the hallway outside also has to get longer the cost is actually even between a window and making the room bigger assuming a two square wide hallway that has cells on either side.
Imagine being a guard during a massive breakout but when you enter the cell block, you see prisoners only trading porn magazines and chilling in each other's cells watching John Wick with other guards vibing with them hahaha
It doesn't really work when you decide to make a Supermax only prison, they'll just kill another guard the moment it gets out of the solitary confinement.
If we want to get really technical about the cell's cost, we can also try to factor in the money you save/lose when you go with a shower block instead of a shower in each cell, additional cost for cable and pipes that you have to get into bigger cells etc. etc. Very nice analysis, liked a lot that RP'ing of yours, thought I was an odd one out ;)
That's very true! Shower blocks can be good because when you're building big cell blocks you don't need boilers all over the place and long runs of hot water pipes. That said, I always prefer in-cell showers, because when prisoners wake up their hygiene requirements are super high, and they tend to get a bit fighty in shower blocks.

In addition, there are a ton of new objects that affect cell rating, starting from 4 different beds: foam mattress (debuff), bed, comfy bed (buff), and bunk bed (debuffs through room size). There's also a pillow but I don't think that's instead of a bed. It's extra, but I haven't tested that yet. You can have food quality set to security grade now (min thru super), and grade many of the room type like common room and yard from the Cleared for Transfer content drop.

In China in their small appartment blocks they actually live like that (shower head over the toilet). And it looks like a solitary cell lol. Poor people. There was a small documentary about it.

They want very low quality as thats the most filled up of my cells. If i have a prisoner that could go in a luxury cell, and I'm out of very low quality cells, he wont go to the luxury cell, hell use the holding cell instead because there is no prison cell of low enough quality as stated by the game :(

But does that combine with the cell grading (maybe if you mark a cell as low security only), so the prisoners try to get a lower security level for better cells? Because you could restrict the common rooms and yards etc.
Bear in mind that bigger cells mean that the extra space means that less cells overall can be placed in an area. So you could make less income with bigger cells as you have less of them. Hence you really want to make sure you make the cells bigger only when you need more space to fit stuff. Since they changed the formula for cells, you can get up to level 10 in a six-square cell as follows: +1 six spaces +1 bookshelf +1 TV +1 Radio +1 Shower (place the showerhead, toilet and drain on the same tile!) +1 Comfortable Bed +1 Comfy Pillow +2 outside window +1 large window (same window as outside window) It's expensive, but it saves space and is a good quality cell.
For #6 all you need is the 3x2 a radio chair bookshelf bed drainage Showerhead and toilet you dont need to make it 3x3 and a window (this is if you want to be space effective)

I tried making a huge cell with a pool table, sofa, drinks machine and prayer mat, and it was still only a 3, which it got for being larger than 16 squares. It's only the things on the list which give you grading points.
Is someone have problems with LAUNDRY it's because the laundry cart need a EMPTY SPACE in the cell! If not it makes problems where you can have very big laundry but still no clothes changed.
You'll need to unlock the Lawyer, then research "Small Cells" which allow cells to not have a size limit. They're then only limited by the need to have a toilet and a bed.
i found that my max security prisoners are the best behaved out of the 3 groups (Min, Med, Max) likely cause i gave them good cells :p haven't even killed guards yet unlike my med sec
I got a question: I builded a prison only with dormitorys. Now I got the issue where they need privacy. So I builded some Single cells, only for this kind of people. BUT THE BUTTON "CHANGE CELL" IS MISSING for all prisoners which live in dormitorys?!? What a bullshit.
That may be true now, but paradox made a lot of balance changes when they bought the game from introversion. Iirc tile cost was decreased, though I'd have to check my spreadsheet to be sure
Love the video... But when I go to logistics and select cell quality, it only shows the cell being unoccupied or not. Same with rooms like canteen or common room. Is there a reason for this? I can't find anything about it on the wiki :(

I found that the 3x2 as you described cost $1300, whereas the 3x3 I built was $1250. The window is $200, so it really bumps up the price.

Correct. While they don't count towards cell quality, they do help fulfil prisoners needs. Exercise from the weights bench, for example.

Did you calculate the installation of lights in the cells aswell? I'm sure they get deducted after the Foundation is built.

The button for the cell gradings is next to the one for the cell status. If you're clicking the correct one then I don't know what it could be.

It's always been the base minimum size. You can go smaller, but you need to research Small Cells - They're under the Lawyer :)
