Had this convo with a client who wanted to cover her braids with a wig to attend a formal event. I encouraged her to wear the braids and also asked her why she felt that the braids were informal. Needless to say she left with a new perspective. I agree with the curly cut being a tool to manage shape

This is soooo real! We have to break free from thinking our natural hairstyles aren't formal or appropriate. I'm so glad you were able to shed light onto the situation. Thank you for watching ❤

what you said about people looking at your video and going "this is the standard" is so real. It's their go to logic, It's part of why it's so hard and taking so much time to change girls' pov when it comes to Natural hair. Kind of also reminds me of when it was funny /edgy to camp out under 3c natural hair influencers' mentions saying things like "I can't 4C my hair doing this blabla" when there's so many 4C hair influencers and inspiration and styles that 4C girlies can do and other textures cant. Why even spend that much energy comparing your hair ( I know why, society plays a big role but still if you're natural and u follow the movement, why are we still here)

Yes to all of this, you hit the nail on the head. I’ve said this in a previous video but i really do think when you’re in the early stages of accepting your natural hair, you should ONLY watch people with your same hair type/characteristics. It sets much realer expectations. Thank you so much for sharing ❤❤

I have learned that my twist take on my natural curl no matter what. I just have to embrace it.

I'm not someone who thinks that their natural hair is ugly. I think I have pretty hair but I suck at doing hairstyles. I've just never been that person. My mom also lol. My mom is Nigerian born and raised and yeah apparently not every Nigerian knows how to braid or do hair lol. So is it bad that I can relate to the comments that are talking about how their mini twists never look that good? Your spring twists video makes me want to try spring twists, but I remember when I tried to do Marley twist back back back in the day and it was a disaster. I just could not get the twist to stay attached. I guess because my grip sucks lol. I don't like negativity when it's like dissing natural hair or type 4 hair in general but I can understand sucking at doing hair. And everyone is not going to be good at everything so I don't think it's fair to expect all black women to be able to do intricate styles when other people aren't expected to be able to do that. It just sucks that braiding hairstylists are so expensive these days and don't seem to care about the health of our hair. Maybe I will try the spring twists tbh but I'm going to have to give myself a pep talk first lol.
Also, I feel like it's normal to want your hair to look a certain way. When I was young I remember going to an African braider in NYC to get some thick box braids and I hated the way that it came out that I took it out literally that very same day. It wasn't my aesthetic. I wasn't even natural at the time. I like my hair, makeup, and clothes to fit a certain aesthetic that I like and I feel like it's easy to watch people online on like Instagram or TikTok or whatever and be like okay I want that aesthetic. But I understand where you're coming from too.
