''she grew up with a fierce temper and had already started stabbing people by 13.'' jessica said with a smile.
Kind of reminded my of Arya from Game of Thrones :D
@Elise Schureck english is not my first language but thanks errr
She makes anything sound cute
My youthful obsession with pirates is finally validated.
You and me both sis
Add me to that list!
Add me to the list too!
same
Me too, although my obsession is still ongoing
Matelotage Is a fascinating subject that history has tried to “straight-wash”.
They really tried to still "Matey" from us
.
@@melz6625 There's not much evidence for what was claimed in the video really. But there is significant evidence that, even if matelotage was a form of gay marriage (debatable, but not inconceivable) it was quite rare, and homosexuality was still greatly taboo among the majority of buccaneers, best example to support this being the buccaneer captain Edmund Cooke who was voted to be put under arrest under a (most likely false) accusation of sodomy, strongly implying homosexuality was as frowned upon by buccaneers as it was among the general populace of the time (which is very much so). Source: Bucaniers of America. The second volume.
There's also the fact buccaneers were extremely devout protestants, many being religious exiles fleeing persecution during the European wars of religion, and likely would have frowned upon homosexuality due to their fervent religiosity.
I stand corrected. I thought "straight agenda" was the dumbest thing I've read today, but " straight-washed" wins it. The majority of pirates were heterosexual males.
That title alone deserves some kind of award
It's already iconic.
definitely
Reads like a 3rd grade report title... "exactly what is it"
exactly. she got me with the title
I hope that Jessica is aware of this because it would make her so happy ! ❤😷
There were so many plot twists during this video it was better than Netflix geez
The Lost Pirate Republic was actually pretty good, but I was definitely sad that it underplayed the gayness of piracy. Leave it to Kellgren-Fozard to pick up the slack.
@@OkieDaemon Also the Netflix show only focused in the last episode on Anne Bonny. It was interesting for sure but I was watching the show because of all the female pirates I had heard about. And then they we're barely featured 🙄
Hearing that some history teachers play Jessica’s videos in their classes: God I wish that were me
Not history, but I teach anthropology. Definitely use her videos all the time!
@@isray89 Even more impressive.
My professor showed a few of her videos, the class loved her snarkiness and info
Same here.
I play her videos at LGBT+ club meetings at my college
As soon as I saw female pirate, I immediately heard a voice in my head go "ANNE BONNY"
I thought Gràinne Mhaol 😅
@@Orlaith151 Hahaha getting old school 😉
@@VBirchwood nah just that Irish sense of pride 😂😂
@@Orlaith151 I don't blame you. I'm surprised though you didn't think Anne Bonny too, considering she's Irish 😊
@@VBirchwood I think Anne Bonny was amazing too but my love for Gràinne Mhaol can't be diminished since I read she blew into a handkerchief in front of queen Elizabeth just to be salty 😂
Who knew the Bi-rates on TikTok were far more historical than most realized? I love History.
Same. I love gay history
Same
*pun exists* Nooooooooo
Wait. This is a subculture on tiktok? I am about to ruin my frog-only fyp for this
To think she accomplished so much and history doesn't even remember the name given to her at birth. :(
That may possibly just be western history books. We don't know about China. And they are roughly a third of the world's population. We may as well be the uneducated fraction of it all.
@@MissSeraphine Unfortunately it seems it's pretty usual for South-East Asian history accounts to only name the women as "Mother of", "Daughter of" or "Wife of". The Heian era women in Japan wrote some bomb literature at the time, yet we only know them by their pen names or as those familial relation titles. It's sad.
I think her birth name was Shih Yang.
oh god. "pirates" and "gay" in the same title and my mind is like: hmmm, i haven't watched Black Sails in far too long...
Lmao sameee
What an epic fkn show tho
Is it any good?
I was like "oh so this is where Max comes from!"
@@unicornsprinkles8964 yeeessss
I once saw someone argue that pirates had no concept of ableism. And I have to say, I agree.
The fact that THE image of a pirate is that of a man with an eye patch* and a wooden leg shows a lot about their thoughts on disability. I think it boiled down to "can you still do something we need? K great, moving on then"
*yeah it's said that's because it made it easier to maneuver in the dark or something like that just stay with me here
@@maitesoto1953 You forgot the hook-hand part of the archetype
Pirates also had a system for compensating injuries incurred during raids
(edit: Oh she covered that lol)
Could we have kept this please.
God, you people are absolutely pathetic.
The title: Pirates are gay and the best one was a woman
Me (whose favourite TV show is Black Sails): You are absolutely 100% correct
🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️ God i love that showww
Can you please talk about Hildegard von Bingen? She was a nun who wrote music, books and taught about herbal medizine. She was likely schizophrenic and suffered migraines. So she was both disabled, powerful and cool.
I totally second this. I did a history paper in college on musical nuns of the Medieval period and Hildegard von Bingen was by far my favorite. She also broke a ton of gender stereotypes during her life. I would love to hear your take on her amazing life!
And she was HELLA gay.
There is a CZcams channel named after her where they do bardcore covers
@@kimberlyreitsma yeah, her take on stuff like clothes was totally feminist.
.
Jessica this video is pure gold. Absolute pure gold.
And you need to be in charge of some sort of BBC/Netflix/Hulu/whatever platform period drama/dramedy show about pirates of Hispaniola & Tortuga and a second one about Ching Shih, because your summaries are too perfect for these to not exist.
You are so kind, thank yo so much!
@@jessicaoutofthecloset hey bestie I hope your well and your pregnancy wife I love and I been watching you from the beginning 🙏🏻👩❤️💋👩🌞

Bernadette Banner did a video on a diy pirate/work shirt. I'm making a few this year if I can get ahold of some good fabric.
Historical gay stories are the best thing, if they’re not tragic... I hate how the straight agenda is trying to erase LGBT+ history, I’ve never heard about these events and people and I’m really thankful that you made this video❤️
yeah ❤
Most pirates were terrible people tho
Shush.
@@Cairo40000 True, Pirates were horrible people regardless of sexuality, some of them even used slaves, "The Berber pirates or North Africans were slavers, they mostly hunted down European ships or raided the European coasts, even going as far as Iceland, to enslave people, mainly women, who are sold as sex slaves."
There is no such thing as "straight agenda", mostly LGBT agenda
I still can't get over them both being pregnant at that exact moment. Man.
I wonder if they really were, or if they fibbed and people were just like "ok sure". Miscarriages are pretty common even now, so if a couple of weeks later they were like "the stress of capture made me lose the baby" nobody would think twice about it.
Its possible they knew they were or possible they said it and convinced a prison guard to help them along with it. But they were examined by the court and found to be pregnant. I like to think that Anne Bonny escaped as there is no record of her hanging and there is record of the rest of the crew's
She did escape! And then continued being a pirate under the name Bartholomew Roberts, until she died, a couple years later.
@@theweatherwitch2492 the fierce pirate Roberts!!
Actually, in most historical accounts, she went to live with her wealthy father in the Carolina colony, but an amateur historian recently found a record of the death of an Ann Bonny in a nunnery in Jamaica around 1730
It's worth mentioning that the buccaneers learned how to make and use boucan from the native Taíno people (and the Taínos are really the reason we have barbecue today!)
Pirates: there were gays, there were poor people, there were prostitutes, there were disabled people, there were runaway slaves, there were Native Americans.
Truly the proof that nothing unites people like a common enemy
@@maitesoto1953 if you could do your job they took you on, no matter what race
@@maitesoto1953 absolutely must give credit to the native Taino people! 👏🏿
Well, we clearly need some "Pirates are gay and the best one was a woman" merch.
I may have to draw up some comics.
I second this!😂 please do!
I saw this title and got SO excited! I did a huge project on gay lady pirates around the world in third grade, and really that should have been a clue at the time that I was BI AS HECK. 💖
The adults in your life must have been pretty darn awesome if you even knew there *were* gay lady pirates in third grade.
@@resourceress7 Thankfully it turned out the adults in my life were just as LGBTQ+ as I was. I was INCREDIBLY lucky. :)
I enjoy your glee in telling us when something is exceedingly gay that was hetero in public opinion 🥺
I mean, I'm both gay and a pirate. Just not the cool variety of either.
EA doesn't deserve my 40 bucks
:) this is very, very cool.
What’re you talking about? Of course you’re the cool kind of pirate!
@@cordeliajackson8615 thank you
Hey, in a world where game publishers are increasingly try to erase any forms of consumer rights and protections so that they can milk us for everything we're worth in exchange for increasingly inferior products, that variety of piracy is cool as hell!
Edit: And that's not even getting into the worker abuse and exploitation.
@@FlorenceFox oh I am very aware of all the flaws of the games industry because I am actually trying to get into it. There's some good companies out there but EA and Blizzard don't hold my respect, nor my money.
I would love to see Ching Shih's story made into a Netflix show in the same style as Bridgerton!
This is the definition of “They we’re bad people but they weren’t *bad people* “
The fact we haven’t gotten a historial epic miniseries or film following Ching Shih is beyond criminal.
I did a report on Madame Ching Shih. She is honestly one of my favorite women in history. Such a badass.
Well that was fascinating. Your historical videos are my favorites.
One tiny suggestion: Maybe leave some citations of your sources in the notes for those who want to read more?
I think there are few things in the world I love as much as Jessica's historical profiles and when they're about gay pirates and rich pirate queens ... I love.
today I learned that Pirates of the Caribbean was surprisingly well-researched 🤯
I absolutely didn't just watch this twice, in case I missed something. Also, Jess kills anxiety.
As one with a bachelor's in History, I must say that I would have loved to take a history course from you. Wait! That's what's happening now.
Mate-lotage is just the fanciest way to say "they were roommates!"
Alternate title: All the Gay and POC Netflix’s ‘Lost Pirate Kingdom’ left out
My mom told me this joke as a child: Three kids are trick or treating. One was dressed as a knight, one was dressed as a fairy, and the last was dressed as a pirate. At the first house the lady answered the door and asked each of the kids about their costumes. When she came to the pirate she asked "Where are your buccaneers?" The boy looked at her with a frown and said "Under my buckin' hat!"
You could say pirates really liked... booty. 👀
If you haven't seen this, the series "Black Sails" has both Anne Bonnie and many other LGBT+ storylines. And it is a generally good watch.
Is this about Anne Bonny? Please say yes!?
Edit: ah no but this lady is awesome anyway
Edit: yes Anne Bonny!!
If anyone hasn’t watched Black Sails, I highly recommend it.
Such an emotional roller coaster
I already knew who it was going to be about but I still felt like she was gonna mention Anne Bonny and yep, indeed. Also Black Sails is amazing
I can't express how happy I am that I know what she'll talk about
Edit: Wait no nevermind I was thinking of different gay pirates
That just goes to show how many gay pirates there were
Don’t be shy, what pirates were you thinking of?
@@crystalcat3877 Well there were probably a lot of what we would call queer pirates because of how social customs were ignored, but I was thinking of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, British pirates in the Caribbean.
@@LiceParasite but she does talk about them
She talks about them later in the video
"No, really, quite quite gay." 😁🌈🦄
It's my favourite thing
"Now occasionally accented by women" made me choke; I love it
STOP! Stop right there, you had me at gay pirates.
I heard that Disney originally before Depp started making them millions of dollars didn't like his portrayal of Capt. Jack Sparrow, and asked him why he was playing the character so gay. Dep replied, "I only play gay pirate rolls" Or something to that extent. They told him to change the character because it seemed too "GAY" for them, and he said, "No" I don't follow much in Hollywood, but I did catch one three minute clip of how he created the character. Not that I have watched the movies though. Honestly, I think his whole idea was the idea that he had been out to sea way too long in the sun and drank way to much rum... That walking on land would be hard, and land legs are an issue for people who have been out to sea for a stint even a crossing of an ocean.
I once spent three days in a cruise ship and when I came back to land for the first couple days I would get randomly dizzy. Like seasick but on land. Land legs are real
Johnny said something more along the lines of "All the characters I play are gay"
@@maitesoto1953 Same here. xD I kept asking my friend if the land was swaying,
"Yes. But, no."
"Okay."
**Both of us resume walking like we're on a ship in a slight storm**
The 5 dislikes are black beards ship
Blackbeard being more famous and hailed at "The greatest pirate" is those headlines where it was a woman who got the gold and broke a world record, but the guy who got the bronze medal is the one who's named and treated like he won
Seeing how excited you got talking about Anne Bonny, may I interest you into watching Black Sails? Ask Rowan Ellis, she has a full video essay on the series. Gay pirates? Check. Female ones? Check. Poliamory? Check, check. Go ahead. Watch it.
Fun fact: It has actually been quite common historically to use adoption as a form of gay marriage. It was legal, made people your closest relative without blood relation and usually required no significant age difference and only the agreement of both people directly involved if done in adulthood. It could also help in immigration. Of course, adopting children together wasn't possible, but even having children together would be somewhat possible if one partner brought them into the relationship. They would legally be siblings instead of children to the adopted partner, but it was overall a great option for people working with a system that didn't really accommodate or want them.
so i can’t watch this video yet but i have to mention that my first reaction upon seeing the title in the notification was ‘hell yeah!’
11:13 "I'm a woman, and I'm VERY attracted to you."
This absolutely melted my gay heart!
I love that "Pirates were Gay and the best one was a woman
" even if I know that they were the bad people but it still feels empowering you know
Maybe you'll find some relief in knowing they weren't all necessarily the worst? Blackbeard supposedly never hurt any of his prisoners, and Captain Benjamin Hornigold apparently once hunted a ship just to ask the crew to give him their hats, as his men had lost theirs, and then left them alone. There's quite a few interesting stories lol. They, like, did very many morally wrong things, obviously, but they weren't bloodthirsty villains, and were generally more about stealing from powerful empires to sustain their lives outside of the statu quo than about hurting innocent people
My AP History teacher actually covered this and I am so hyped to learn more
I haven't even watched the vid yet but HOLY HQFWGWUSV I was wondering when someone would speak up about my loveliest pirate idol, queen of the oceans
Edit: omg yes it's really MISS CHING SHI, YESSS
This is one of the best acknowledgements I've seen of teachers using the best CZcams clips to support teaching. If I don't know enough about a topic to do it well in PD I go straight to CZcams for a short clip of an enthusiast talking about it...
I am now seriously considering this for my chosen research topic for my history studies
my Mother is related to the Pirate Queen GRACE O’Malley
The name sounded familiar (and obviously irish) so I wanted to look it up and I believe your talking about Gráinne mhaol? Shes very well know over here but I've never heard her being referred to as Grace O'Malley?
I'm actually from and have lived in Co Mayo my entire life if that's any interest to you 😁I've been to her old castle many times. It's really cool!
"No, quite gay... now strap in for a history romp"... is literally the most eloquent and amazing sentence I ever heard. 🤣✌️
I am proud to have taught my summer camp students about all three of the lady pirates in this video. They were all certified badasses!
Jessica, you always know how to brighten our days! That title combined with the fact that you're here means I'm ready to smile for at least the next 18 minutes!
In the US, schools often have mascots, and the mascot at my High School was (were?) the Buccaneers (I live in coastal Florida, so the nautical theme is big here). This video gives that new meaning to me!
Your accent on Chinese names was great!!! I greatly appreciate the effort you made to properly pronounce everything!
I love it how Jessica takes the time to apologise for the possible mispronunciation of names when she's deaf and is completely excused from not knowing how to pronounce them (while still putting in A LOT of effort and probably not "butchering" the names as badly as she thinks). Meanwhile, most hearing youtubers don't even bother looking up the pronunciation of foreign names.
It is literally my job to be a pirate or a gladiator or a viking runnin around with swords being "educational" and I'm so excited that this is getting a fan resurgence but gutted we haven't been able to do shows for the covid :'(
Hello everyone, I hope you all have a great week. Stay safe out there and don't forget you are a valid, worthy and cared about.
This video was hilariously saucy, yet highly educational! Well done, Mrs. Kellgren-Fozard!
They should make a film out of her bio. Also, the vid is spot on: sassy, classy, well-edited, gay... I didn't know any of these ladies, so thanks!
“She’d take your fortune… and more.”
My heart?
Thank you for feeding my pirate obsession, this was very much needed :D
we had a talk about gay pirates in lgbt club in school a few weeks ago!
Somehow, the expression "Be gay, do crime" comes to mind :'D
By the way, one account I've heard about Ching Shih's "retirement" from pirate-hood, basically went like this:
Ching Shih et al.: "Hey government, you want us to stop, right? Howzabout we retire and promise not to do the pirate thing, if you let us go free with our money and lives?"
Government: "Uhhh suuure, come sign a treaty at the city?"
Pirates: "Sure. Oh yeah, and we'll come unarmed, to show you we mean well."
Government: *sighing in relief* "Oh, sounds great! Totally won't capture you!"
And they did come unarmed.
Their fleet was docked at the port with 10 000 pirates in waiting.
But *Ching Shih* and the other leaders didn't have weapons :'D
They signed the treaty and went their way, and the lady herself founded a gambling house and lived rich for the rest of her life.
So I don't know how reliable this story is, but it's definitely a badass story, for sure! :D
I love how passionate you are while telling this story, kept my ADHD butt very engaged!
This is such a good series. Thank you, Jessica!
Im from Dominican Republic. It great to learn this. Thx Jessica ❤
I needed this pirate content after having just finished Black Sails.
I am absolutely obsessed with these historical profiles! Looking forward to hearing about more of my historical faves!
I just got this book it’s called “all out” it’s a collection of short stories about LGBTQ+ characters (there’s even an asexual character!). Some of the stories are based off real people. Anyway this video remind me of this book because one story was about 2 girls who ran away from their weddings to become pirates together!
Just as when I got into my pirate phase, Jessica makes a video about gay pirates. I feel extremely happy right now 😭
I love your historical profile series, but I loved this one the best. You had such enthusiasm. Definitely sharing this one!!
I hope you read about Grace O Malley. She was an Irish pirate queen and activist. She even met with Elizabeth 1 where they had to speak in Latin, as neither spoke the others native language.
The novel (and audiobook) "A Pirate's Heart" by Catherine Friend is a wonderful exploration of a lesbian pirate story. It also contains a 'modern' pirate story that is as fun and intriguing as the one that happens on the high seas. 👍
the absolute and utter joy of this video is the most beautiful, infectious and uplifting thing I've seen in a long time. Thank you for this 18-minute pleasure
