- In this video, I look at the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 autofocus lens for Nikon Z mount. Over the last few weeks, I've had this lens attached to my Nikon Z7 and I've been using it to capture images of the concerts/gigs I've been photographing. I'm missing a fast prime from my gig photography kit bag so will this fill the gap?

Looks like a nice piece of kit Pal !! Loved seeing your live concert shots !!
Cheers Darren, for the price it's a decent bit of kit. :-)
Superb shots there Julian 🤘🏻
Cheers Paul! 👍
Great video Julian, very useful actually, as this lens has been on my radar recently. It's surprising how many good third party lens manufacturers there are nowadays.
Cheers Simon, yeah, some of these 3rd party lenses are very good for their price. I don't think then can compare to the Nikon lenses, but it all depends on your budget, what you will use them for, and how often. For me an 85mm is lens that I will use every now and again so the Viltrox represents a good balance between value for money and quality. I use the 23mm f/1.4 on Z fc for video all the time. :-)
Hi Julian: I just found this video after being at B & H Photo in NYC this past Monday. I've been giving serious thought to buying a lens in this focal length and am considering this lens at 50% of the cost of the Nikon Z version. Great job on this video (as always) and a thoughtful review. Thank you for the care and attention to detail and your thoughts. Cheers, Paul Connors
Glad you enjoyed in Paul and good luck with your purchasing decisions!

Looks like a really good lens for your concert photography Julian.
Thanks Tim, it does the job I need it to for sure. :-)
Nice video Julian - great set of stage photos! 👍
Cheers mate. I do wonder how much I'd notice the quality difference with a Nikon Z lens compared to the Viltrox lens in those tricky lighting conditions. :-)
@@jbairdexp The Z will definitely be sharper - I think the Viltrox series are similar to Sigma - 50/50 if you get a good copy or not.
@@GingerPhotographer If I had a greater and more frequent need for such lenses I would probably get a Nikon prime. Just finished editing my Nikon Z 24-120 f/4 S video which you might be interested in. :-)
@@jbairdexp z85 comes out once a month 😄- Nikon Z 24-120 f/4 S is a sweet lens! Glad I pre ordered and got it now, apparently Nikon are putting the prices up as from 1st April.
@@GingerPhotographer I've had mine since 24th Dec - I ordered as soon as it was announced. :-) It will come as no surprise to you that it's a great lens...well, for me it is anyway.
Hi Julian: I just purchased this lens yesterday 24 July 22 as an alternative to the Nikon version. I am looking forward to doing some portrait work with it. At this price point, I think it'll prove to be a real value proposition. It is also my first lens in the Z format as all of the rest of my lenses are F mount Nikon and Tamron lenses. Cheers, Paul Connors
Hey Paul, congrats on your purchase! Hope you are having fun with it. :-)
@@jbairdexp Thank you, Julian.
