    Again, I am NOT a profession antique appraiser. I’m here to just give you an overview of the market and reacting to comments on the live stream :) if you’re interesting in visiting the international forum on the 1st and 3rd Sunday, it’s fun to see what’s there. If it’s junk or treasure, it’s up to you to decide. -John

    I guess technically it is the largest antique market in Tokyo, but if you want to visit the largest one in the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, you would go to Yamato market in Yamato, Kanagawa. Unfortunately, since Covid, they've been closed, but it is the best in terms of value for money. Other options include Fukagawa and Kokokuji.

    This really reminds me of the few months I spent in Amsterdam. Every weekend there'd be markets of some sort or another, and a couple of these were about antiques. Lots of interesting stuff to look at, though I wasn't really interested in buying any. The other discovery I made was the British (or at least the BBC) is CRAZY for antiques. I watched a lot of BBC because most of the other programming was in Dutch, which I didn't understand. Pretty much every DAY they'd have one or more shows on antiques - a lot of them were competitions where a couple of notable experts would visit some antique markets or shops, either in Britain or on the Continent, buy stuff, and then sell them. Whoever made the greater amount of money won. This was on EVERY DAY, with no exceptions!! ^_^ One thing I'd read about Japan was back in the 1980s, there was ZERO interest in buying used stuff. None. People would throw away old clothes and old appliances because there was no use for them. People didn't move into someone's old house, they'd tear it down and build a new one. It was seen as creepy to wear someone's old clothes or live in someone else's house, since the clothes and the house contain some of the essence of the previous owner. This stopped in the 1990s, when Japan's economic crisis happened. After that, markets for used clothes and other stuff started to take off because people had to economize.

    16:55 - Looks like Moomin. If it's in the original language it would be, I think, Swedish. I've never watched or read it myself, but I did read that Miyazaki worked on a Japanese anime TV adaptation when he was younger. I have read the Wikipedia page - what made me do it was coming across a printed mug in a Minisou (sort of a Daiso for the stylish) featuring Moomin and the Snorkmaiden. Snorkmaiden??????????????? REALLY had to find out more... ^_^ It does sound like a world filled with bizarre personalities.

    These prices seem like rip-offs for the low quality. I have never been to Japan but some of the shopping videos I have seen on youtube about Japan, the price always seems at least 2x what you would pay in USA or EU for secondhand and "antiques".

    • @melonwaterman6047
      @melonwaterman6047 Před 4 lety

      I went there this time last year and went to all the second hand stores and markets I could. This Oedo one, to me, was lame. I'm not into antiques exactly but I like old toys, magazines, knick knacks, etc, and this Oedo market just seemed to be asking a high price for everything. I think it's because these might be actual 'antique dealers.' Tokyo City Flea Market, on the other hand, was great. $1 toys, model kits, books, everything. Those are just people selling their old stuff. There's also a chain of stores that end in 'Off,' like Hobby Off, Book Off, etc. They're real cheap - full of $1 manga or figures for $10 that you'd pay $80 - 100 for on eBay. Overall, as someone who only likes to pay small amounts for toys/etc, I had a good time and found a lot of things I was happy with.
