    I loved Bimal Roy's movies Do Bigha Zameen, Bandini, Sujata, Madhumati etc Found out that for Do Bigha Zameen(1953) he was inspired by Vittorio de Sica's Bicycle Thieves (1948). That was my knowledge of Italian Neo-realism. This Rossellini's masterpiece predates that and indeed is a great film.

      I think that it is fair to say that Italians were victims of their own government as well as WW2.
