The sight of those tendersweet fried clams made my mouth water. I remember how good they tasted back then. I must have stopped at one HoJo's on every one of my road trips. Great meals, ice cream, candy bars, and even stuffed animals.

I was there around this time. It wasn't really a Howard Johnson's anymore, it just had the signage. Inside it was basically a Greek diner, not very good. I asked where the Tend-R-Sweet Fried Clams and the hotdog on toast were, and the old waitress had no idea what I was talking about. I told her she was plenty old enough to remember the glory days, and she snarled back that her family was poor had been poor and never ate out. I said I didn't mean THAT long ago, I meant the 50s and 60s...

This is the Howard Johnson's restaurant that SHOULD HAVE been saved, as it was still very original looking and well maintained into the early 2000's. RIP

Hey, pass me them clams! I stayed at the adjoining HJ Motor Lodge in the mid-2000's which was still pretty authentic and had it's signature Orange roof. Sadly the restaurant, thought it looked as if it could open tomorrow, was vacant. The adjacent motor lodge was later torn down.
