I lost half my family :( I survived and migrated. I feel so guilty that while I’m here safe, my family (the few I have left) is still suffering

Im not from Haiti but my family had a maid that was from Haiti. She was visiting her family when this happen and we never found her ever again or even knew what happen. Poor girl i still miss her. I wish at least we could know what happen to her. She was more like a sister to me.

There is a mistake in this video: 1976 Tangshan Earthquake should be around M 7.6 or in between M 7.5~7.8 depending on which magnitude scale used, not M 8.6.

This reminded me of comments made after the Kobe earthquake in the 1990s.
Much of the worse damage occurred to private homes. These houses had very heavy tile roofs. A style of roof that had been developed over centuries because they were found to have been very effective at combatting the destruction which the Pacific typhoons caused. They did not come lose in the strong winds. But for the earthquake, they were disastrous.
Countries which get both earthquakes and tropical storms are so so unlucky. And then one can add in volcanoes. The poor Philippines was hit by a typhoon when Mt Pinatuba erupted - the second most explosive eruption of the 20th century. All the ash was made still more heavy and crushed buildings.
