Salvaging an Abandoned Orchard Tractor.. How bad is it??

- I bought this unique looking David Brown forward-control tractor for $450 sight unseen. The previous owner had inherited it and had never had it running so I had no idea what state it was in when I got there..

How did you convince the wife that another tractor should come home. The cost must have been very high Ha Ha😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Her weakness is that she loves garden mulch, I came up with a solution that kept us both happy 😅
@@MartyT I loved her telling the seller the tractor was going to be well treated. Marty T's genteel tractor retirement home.
If you are going to get a dedicated tractor for every power gardening implement you are going to run out of yard room
@@MartyT you're a wise man... Find her weakness and use it to advance...
All joking aside double win for you both..
Mulch is very valuable 🙂🙂
@@MartyT I thought it was chocolates flowers and diamonds. Now I know where I've been going wrong.
Love that the Mrs assured the farmer that the old tractor would be loved and cared for
Then later called it ugly 🤭.
@@jthampshire She's not wrong though!
@@jthampshire You don't have to be beautiful to be loved and cared for.
New Zealand’s own McGyver. People love their old equipment. Can’t bear to scrap it. You provide a wonderful alternative. 2nd life stuff. 👏👏
Wonder what Mrs says to her friends. ”Yeah, he loves those greesy old tracktors and stuff. I kind of let him, if that makes him happy.”
Hi Marty. That used to be my uncles tractor. He built it for spraying the orchard. It used to have a tank towed behind it. Hence no 3 point linkage. He is a very good engineer very similar to you in the ability to rebuild and change. I have passed on the link to him just to confirm I had the right tractor.
Absolutely love watching your videos and proud to watch true kiwi ingenuity at work.
Hope you get back home soon.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
That's awesome.. He must be a clever fella, I'm impressed with the build quality
Not allowed to get more tractors. Brings the wife to collect the next tractor. Well played sir.
"Dad, I found this cool tractor so if I can pack in boxes can I bring it home?"
Me in 88 when I had to leave the beautiful people and country of New Zealand after six weeks of meeting my relatives and seeing how I would life the rest of my life not being a consumerist but instead fixing and maintaining what I have. My father is why I became an auto technician even though he's a marine biologist. Thanks New Zealand, your traditions live on in a small town in New Hampshire USA.
@TIHS PID the REKCIL TILC. Americans are welcome here in NZ. America saved us from a terrible fate in the early to mid 40s when i was a small boy, (although i didn't know about it at the time). Personally, i will be forever grateful to the US Forces who probably, unknowingly , saved my life and those of my parents and my siblings. Robert. NZ Veteran Infantry Soldier. 82yo.
Clit licker the dip shit💀💀🤣🤣🤣
NZ has changed radically since the 1980's. My roots there go back hundreds of years when the ancestors arrived there from other places in the pacific so I have a front seat to the goings on. I am saddened by what is happening as some, who would have been known as carpet baggers in the old days, strip the nation of it's rights.
@@daddybob6096 you must be old Daddybob, My father was in a children's home in Papatoe during WW2 and would have been 91 this year. He often mentioned meeting a lot of US soldiers (most were teenagers) as they waited their turn to head off to the islands. Every Saturday ,a small column of trucks would arrive at the home and load up with kids who they would take into town for movies etc. Dads favorite memories were of being taken to the "Frisco burger bar " on the Gt South Road ,where the kids were given a real US burger and a coke.
Bit of useless unrelated information but John Wayne shot a movie in NZ just out of Wellington. It’s where some of the US marines would come for training before being deployed. There was a pretty big camp there. It’s on you tube.
You've got it made, Marty. You have a beautiful family, beautiful land, more knowledge and willpower to do things than most people, and you've got a lifetime of projects to keep you busy :)
That's the best way to live, only you can pull the plug on your dreams
Thanks Marty, Watching your videos has given me confidence to tackle a lot more of the mechanical work on the farm we started a few years ago. Your calm, methodical almost meditative approach makes you the perfect teacher. Big appreciation from across the ditch. :)
Same here! I love how Calm he describes his thoughts and strategy to find out what is going on! learned a lot from his Videos!!!
Marty I can just imagine how you're heart 💓😍 when you hear that beautiful sound of these old timers starts up one time after lying around for such a long time and still working. 😊
This is why I LOOOOOVE 'DA TUBE'!! Because I get exposed to vehicles I HAVE NEVER seen before!!
Good video. If you're going to use the old beast just for the chipper, you could build a dump box onto it above the flat area of the white cover (above the hinges from the side panels) and then shoot the chips into it so you can haul them away instead of using a wheel barrow. It could tip sideways rather than like a dump truck so you can access the panels when you need them.
There’s an idea👍😄
Thinking along the same lines and then read it in the comments. 👍
Brilliant! A chiipper/hauler in one vehicle like the big boys.
Brilliant idea … make the bin swingable for easy tipping.
@@markhelseth253 Suburb-frontyard sized. Better than the big boys.
Marty where did you find yourself such an amazing awesome wife who will allow you to collect all of these great good old timers machines, my Mrs wants every single thing lying around be put in a skip 😅 you have a absolute jewel of a wife take great care of her as you can't find many women like her who don't mind living a happy natural simple life and accepting who you are and what you do. ❤ you're CZcams channels 🤗😊 Marty and the wife and kids please do keep up the great work of saving them old timers machines and giving them a 2nd chance of life and hopefully your kids and grandkids will carry on with the 2 of you's legacy ❤ 😊
I've seen my fair share of mods, even made a couple of old open tractors into offset row aligned, enclosed cabin units, but this one... this one takes the cake. What a cute little tractor. :))
2:08 "it will get lots of oils and filters" hahahah, I love it. Totally what Marty T does to these rusty things :) Thanks Mrs T!
You have a very understanding wife Marty....🙂.....
That tractor looks like an early 70s DB 1210 or 990 but those 3.6 litre 4 cylinders were built like tanks.
My Dad owns a 1975-1976 DB 995/990 with the same engine, done over 55000 hours, and no matter where it is,
after months of sitting on end it still starts up no problem.
They are so simple to work own and will just keep going.
The tires on that”Thing” is worth the price of admission. I love your Toyota Camper. I have a Toyota Tundra. Good on ya.
As much as i love your work and video’s its the sound of the wildlife in the background i love. Only another 3 days and hopefully i will be arriving in Auckland to see my daughter and grandchildren in a NZ Summer for Christmas.
The David brown 1210 followed the 1200 model of the 1960s and produced 72Hp din in the uk at any rate. The 12 speed gbox should be syncromesh although you probably will never know with that linkage!
Most had a two speed pto 540 and 1000 rpm (or 540 at low revs for light use)
Over here David Browns were considered reliable units that often leaked a bit of oil, but ploughed on regardless. I guess your gearing will be pretty low as the one we had came with 12x38 wheels on the back. Diff ratio will probably be stamped on the ID plate.
Someone in the past put hours and hours of time into modifying and working on that tractor. And by the look of it they did a damn good job. It is great to see you bring it back to life, and even better put it too work!
This channel is like mind yoga for engineering types. It leaves me a little bit calmer and able to face my too busy life here in the UK.
Thanks for sharing your world with us.
Wow, what a great running engine...just purr after so many years sitting.
You are a master finding and fixing the weirdest machines Marty.
Cheers from Texas. 🤠
Marty this was a "feel good" video for me.....sitting here in Pennsylvania U.S.A. as we slip in to winter....with colder & incredibly short days through December 21st.....I actually was uplifted in "spirit" seeing your greenery, the fruit on the orchard trees, the blue sky and sunshine, and the happy smiles of the ladies in your family with you all dressed in comfortable summer wear.....It certainly is NOWHERE near as appealing "weather-wise" here. Thanks for the lift Marty.
It’s full blown winter here, blizzard tonite. I miss the birdsongs. For keeping me entertained a million thanks. St. Paul Minnesota.
I am so jealous that you and the kids are enjoying some fresh cherries off the tree. Just deeeeelicious.
I've never seen a gauge that measures a heartbeat instead of RPM. That thing sounds GREAT! It's hard to believe that's your daughter. What a sweetheart! My girls are in their late thirties and early forties now, and it sure pulls on my heartstrings to see her joy in finding the fruit. I hope everything is going well and they're working on your roads. You need to get that Patreon going! Best wishes and MERRY XMAS! Thanks for the video!
😆 yes it is a quirky little machine.. Thanks, same to you
Bringing life to an old beast is so relaxing to watch. Your ability to diagnosis the problem is amazing. Well done! Looking forward for more adventures!
Never seen one of those and grew up on orchards. The old man was constantly dodging branches when spraying with the Masseys. Awesome bit of engineering. Reminds me of an airport tug,
Yes I spent years on an apple orchard towing a sprayer wearing full spray suit and respirator helmet on scorching hot days, dodging branches.. I would have given anything to have this machine back then.. I would have added a/c though
I’m patiently waiting for my invite to Marty’s museum of mostly marvelous machines opening!.
it’s so strange Christmas in the summer (I’m in the US). I got to spend a winter (Christmas) in Argentina once some years ago, and it was very strange to me to be in shorts on Christmas Day. So wonderful getting to see your wife and daughter. Wishing you, your wife, son and daughter a Very Merry Christmas!
Thank you for blowing off the engine with some air my OCD was killing me😂
Haha yes I've heard about tractors being burnt to the ground from bird nests on the exhaust
@@MartyT Very good point I didn't even think of that, a Mouse nest would probably combust even easier. Well spotted
Ty for saving a awesome piece of machinery.
It’s sad seeing usable equipment abandoned while I’m still using a pick, shovel and wheelbarrow
that forward cabin layout looks so cool for some reason
That machine is superb. It's brilliantly unusual. I love the whole concept of it and the look. Can't wait to see it at your other place once you can get back there. Keep bringing us your excellent videos, I just love the methodical way you work.
can't go wrong with an old david brown. i revived an old 990 that had a blown head gasket. it sat in the shed for over a year with the head off it while i sourced parts and it fired right back up when i bolted it back together. love em
Love that grin when it start, i know that feeling well, its always the best moment of the day. Cheers
Old diesels never die, they just rest for a while
Marty, even your old lady knows that you're the "tractor whisperer" LOL! I really like how the whole family got out to enjoy the chipping! That was pretty cool to see and man, that thing runs absolutely MINT! It seriously runs like new! Glad you got the old girl running and are putting it to use, shame to let that nice diesel just rot away. Hope you're enjoying the weather, it looks very pleasant out there my friend.
The surprise look on your face when it fired up the is priceless 😮
This is why I like Marty T video he gets something gets it running and uses it unlike the other will it run channels that get something running and we never see it get used or never see it again.
What a neat "thing". As a mobile chipper it has low clearance and cab protection so you can drive it through the bush to get to chipping jobs. Another great find!
Another great reresection of an old piece of equipment. We are thousands of miles apart and may different in some ways but one thing where we are the same is your love for our family. It makes me smile when I see your family enjoying each other. Thanks for sharing that with us. I look forward to the next video.
I love it when you popped the top and little miss said ooOOoo😅
Nice tractor I love old abandoned tractors like those you found
Great video! i Love watching your videos. loving seeing you bring the old stuff back to life. :)
Marty I absolutely love watching you work. Such enthusiasm and Always a positive attitude. You have a lovely family
Merry Christmas to you and your family
That thing is a peach, I'm glad you found it!
I think a short interview or explanation of what this odd looking tractor was used for would have built interest in this video. Follow that with an outro at the end, wrapping up how you may use it further would have every viewer more interested or excited about subscribing. It does run beautifully.
See next vid for the newspaper report on it when it was built
Your videos are so fun an peaceful. It’s always relaxing to watch and I always learn something new. You have a big patience and you show that there’s a solution to every problem. I’m a big fan from Quebec, Canada and I always enjoy watching your videos! Keep going! I wish you will be able to get back in the woods soon!
I can’t believe you got that running and didn’t even have to change the diesel filters. A very interesting bit of kit I have never seen before in AUS. Well done
Really should change the fuel filters as a matter of course.
In the USA state of Minnesota we have a lot of rust and like you we love our vintage stuff. When working on an old car, outboard or snowblower if it is an electrical issue we say it is always the ground or in your case always the earth. Best wishes thanks for all you share best wishes from the cold and snowy northern USA
I love how you have a large displacement dedicated diesel powerplant to run just about everything on your property
Now that’s a win! Most unique rescue to date Marty. Can’t wait for your mountain road to be fixed.
What a thoughtful husband! Fantastic Christmas present!
That would be a good one for the kiddos to paint up for Dad
So wise to have the Mrs. like it. She's right on this one. Its ugly. But man it fired right up! A mobile chipper. The only thing that's missing is driving it up the driveway that you can't. Man! That has to ABSOLUTELY SUCK!!! I pray they get the roads fixed VERY SOON!! Even I'm missing it and it's not my house.
Thanks Marty for the content over the year. All the best to your whanau and have a break over Christmas and enjoy the lovely Sounds.
Thanks for the donation mate, much appreciated.. And thanks for watching my vids 🙂
1210 motor is very solid. Pulls hard, above its weight in heavy draught conditions.
11:39 That smile on your face when it came to life made me smile too ☺️
@21:49 - That wheelbarrow - It was probably made in my current town of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. True Tempers world headquarters is in Camp Hill. 85% of all wheelbarrows made in the USA and Canada are made in that plant in the suburb of Harrisburg which is also the capitol of Pennsylvania.
Aside from the new tractor being super neat, that Toyota camper van is freakin sweet! Thanks again for taking us along on the journey, Marty. Next time, get one that doesn’t fire up so easy, I love the long videos😂
Everything looks like it was put on backwards.. what a nice machine 😅👍
Mrs T filming is so cool!
Thanks, Marty. Great CZcams production sharing your adventure with us from start to end.
Pretty useful piece of equipment there!
So happy to see that you are well-capable of fixing items and finding ways to repurpose them.
Kudos!
Marty I think , is the original , DOC BROWN . IF IT NEEDS FIXED , HES YOUR MAIN MAN . AND . PURPOSES , restores the uses of said machines at will . A genious in disguse .
It looks like you got lucky with the rubber on the tractor it's rare to have them in such nice shape!!! 🤠👍
Hi Marty, you have just got yourself another item you got and running. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait until your next project.
Really enjoy seeing the unique equipment you find, get working and use
This must be at your other location. Don’t recognize it. Love how you nurture the equipment you buy and bring them back to life.
Loving the videos Marty ❤ keep ‘em coming
Excellent to hear the Misses say, "it's gonna get a lot of oil and filters"...she knows the routine...ha. Easy Peasy on this one, with only a bad ground. Thanks for the episode.
I love the balance between what you show to us.... I love the scenery...
I love your channel..... Well done Mr Marty and family.... 👍👍👍👍
Marty has saved a lot of awesome old tractors - and showed people all around the world how to do the same. Amazing to watch these videos. I am interested in restoring old things and learn a lot watching Marty do his thing 😊
Very unique looking machine.
Love the way you made it a family day out to collect the tractor. Despite your comments about your wife saying "no more tractors" I think she knows where your heart truly lies and is happy you're happy playing rather than going stir crazy.
Great job giving this cool tractor a new life! Appreciate you bringing us on your journey!
I like watching you bring old equipment back to LIFE! I was surprised when the orchard David Brown started so easily. Amazing how they built things. Your wife must be extremely patient. I cracked up when you started singing "Merry Christmas to you ".
Good thinking Marty, always have video evidence of the missus there at the time of pick up or purchase of these machine “projects” and on record as saying it’s good to have around. That way it can be used to support your case should the collection get too big.
A great find Marty, nice to see the Mrs. Helping out.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Defo an interesting conversion. Wishing you and your family a great Christmas and New Year Marty👍👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧
Wow. What a cool unit!
Since the engine runs so well and it's already got the enclosure built around it and no attachment lift but a good PTO (kinda precluding it from useful general farmwork), this machine would make a perfect diesel generator conversion. Or some other kind of general purpose "rolling engine power source"
Hi from UK, great stuff Marty and family, very entertaining and good watching this morning. Many thanks.
A family project that turned out very useable! Enjoyed watching, thanks.
somebody put a lot of effort into creating the body and fenders for that rig which no doubt contributed to it's current superb mechanical condition. I love those fenders, they remind me of a side-wheel paddle steamer. It would be nice to see the plywood cockpit remade and the whole thing painted to match the chipper.
Love the hand winch, never see them anymore with all these fancy electric ones. I've used chain pulls and hand winches way up in the hills of New Mexico high centered or slid off too much..best things you can imagine and zero power reliance. The really don't fail if maintenance is done, electric has higher chance of failure. Yes electric is great and has plenty of good uses I know, not denying it. But manual is absolutely a good idea to toss in the back just in case.
My thoughts exactly, I have an electric winch on my boat trailer but I don't trust it, I keep a hand winch in the truck incase it fails
It's like Christmas all year long for you! It's turning into quite the family tradition. Well done my friend 👍
GREAT score! That thing's ready for another decade of work! Good job.
I think it's one where you want to make sure the breaks work before you build up any speed. You're kind of in between the heavy tractor and whatever you crash into.
08:56 A partial cleaning of the filter is done by blowing from the inside out, what do you think?
Yes, i thought that too. If it doesn’t work, the filter is done.
I just wanted to say how much I actually really enjoyed this video more than other ones that you've made in that you included your family in some of the video, I really enjoyed that
Great video Marty. Always impressed by your knowledge and skills .
If Burt Monroe drove a tractor this looks like the one👍
I swear if we gave this man ten minutes with the Queen she'd probably come back to life.
its so cold and dark here where i live. i look foward to your videos this time of year just so i can see some daylight (and warm weather)
thanks again for bringin us along! (congrats on the new toy.)
Love the sound of the David Brown engine, all the very best to you Marty.
What an odd machine. Ive never seen anything like it. Its back-to-front. Amazing how little rust there is on it, the plywood cab is still good and it even started first time. Seems a bit overkill just to drive a chipper though. You could just use a small briggs & stratten lawn mover engine .
Maybe I've been watching too much Diesel Creek, but I was expecting alot more faffing about bleeding injectors and so on. Basically, new battery, clean earth, turn key, go! What an adorably ugly little tractor - great score at $450. Thanks for a year of inspiring videos Marty and Merry XMas to you and your family.
Funny i was thinking the reverse when I was watching DC fix that mitsubishi tractor, Marty would have this running in no time :) I am sure DC leaves a lot more in his videos.
@@muellermade4857 Plus DC doesn't have any David Browns. You just can't kill them!
I thought Mrs.T said no more tractors ?
With the collection of boats you have you could open a marina & use this tractor as a boat launching tractor.
Fair to say most of your subscribers are now fully qualified David Brown mechanics and fault finders. Looking forward to my DB diploma in the mail. Keep up the great vids mate
Merry early Christmas to you and the family marty- here's a small thank you for another year of content
You said you were locked out of the Forrest property, I hope it's nothing serious. It's gorgeous up there. I live about 150 meters off the Atlantic ocean in New Jersey USA and it's just a world away. Hope I can make it down there some time. Those orchards remind me of Washington state in the pacific northwest. Cheers 🤙
Thanks, you too!
I believe it is because the main roads to his property were closed so they could repair them after the massive flooding a while back. He mentioned the detour is so long that it would not be worth traveling back until the construction is finished.
@@nickh7050 ooh must have missed that about the detour somehow.. I remember the flooding and him doing some self repair, I guess good on him the govt is lending a hand. Was pretty bad damage back then so it makes sense. Thanks man!
