MOONMAN C1 REVIEW: or "Why Does the Fountain Pen Belch?"

  • Beloved PandaPen Friends,
    We meet once again to discuss the Moonman C1, a pen that's been in my rotation for well over a year now. I've taken it on planes, trains, automobiles, boats, and every other mode of transportation except hot-air balloon. It's followed me around the world, been a reliable EDC whether on memorable sojourns in extreme climates, poolside sipping icy slush from a coconut or in quarantine.
    It is undoubtedly a pen with definite appeal. It's neither expensive nor especially ornate, and yet there's something about the simplicity of clear solid acrylic, the glass eye-dropper vaguely reminiscent of a laboratory, and the ability to see your latest fancy ink sloshing to and fro inside. It's a very lovely pen that you don't mind taking with you on safari, to the beach or sandbox or pool. In fact, it's the fountain pen that made me a fan of Moonman. However... can we really overlook its similarity to other fountain pen designs and, what for me is worse: its habit of burping and smudging ink here, there and everywhere inside its own cap!
    Once again, Thank you for watching! xx

      @@PandaPenClub I do. I also just received my C1, but can't decide what ink to use in it (since it's such a striking way to display ink, it seems to warrant some consideration). Thanks for enabling, btw. ;-)

    The C1 is what started me in this hobby. I got it and a bottle of Iroshizuku Yama Budo. Its been downhill ever since. It's an awesome pen.

    Prisoner #780 reporting to control …lol! The outtake was brilliant.. is that rain? ..best laugh of the evening, and yes I agree ( as I have one, that I blame Doug from Inkquiring Minds for ) that this is an excellent pen from Moonman and a fantastic writer straight out of the box . Cheers M.

    A pen with a cartridge or converter acts to insulate the ink chamber from the outside of the pen housing. So temperature changes have much more effect on the air pressure of a pen like an eyedropper or a piston or vacuum filler, having no insulation. Burp! Excuse my eyedropper. Still love my C1.

      Mehtab Waraich it is certainly a good choice! Moonman nibs are very dependable like that. If you’re ok with the clipless-ness(!) and if eyedropper potential is something you’re interested in, check out the PenBBS 323 as well (just put a review up for that). I am afraid I’m going to be useless and say I wouldn’t recommend one over the other though - I am very keen on both!

    Great pen and review. Unfortunately my C1 does occasionally burp when low on ink. It might just be the fact that my hands are fairly large causing me to hold the pen further up onto the barrel itself and the fact that my hands tend to be quite warm most of the time.

    Nice review! I have one jinhao x750 and three jinhao x450 pens, which also has #6 nibs and are awesome. After watching reviews of this pen maybe I try it too, looks very nice. How does this Moonman compare to the x450/x750 in terms of writing experience? I like wetter, juicy and thick writing pens.

    • @PandaPenClub
      @PandaPenClub  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey there! Hmm well from a writing perspective, I’m quite a big fan of my velvety x450. The Moonman nib is good, I enjoy it, but there’s a “restraint” to it that mean it’s never going to be up there in the soaring heights for me. I enjoy my x450 more. I’ve never got on like a house on fire with the x750. I haven’t quite fully unpicked why yet (despite attempting to do so in an early review and possibly because its a bit irrational on my part!) If you’re going to try Moonman’s #6 which I should never undersell, the C1 is the most interesting choice in my book. I hope those ruminations were of some sort of use 😊 Do let me know if you get one and what you think.

    Moonman pens are hit-or-miss when it comes to leaks. My girlfriend's Moonman doesn't drip or leak at all. Some have nib creep. And some just drip and leak everywhere. It seems a little nib creep is average. It's not too bad. Just rinse the cap out and clean with an ear swab occasionally and you're good. If you get one that really leaks... I don't think there's a way to deal with it.

    • @PandaPenClub
      @PandaPenClub  Před 3 lety

      Exactly this dripping issue cropped up (very tangentially) in the video I just uploaded. I have been doing similar to you: swabbing, disregarding, repeating 😊

    Purchase one of these a few days ago, and unfortunately, it's junk. Looks beautiful, but ink flow is terrible. Have removed the feed and nib twice in order to clean them, but it has not improved things at all. Unfortunately, there's no other pen out there that looks like this one, other than the custom one mentioned in this review, which sells for $275.
    I might have gotten a dud, but don't feel like buying another to confirm that.
