How to Test Trailer lights

- Sometimes China provides us with good stuff thats not what we are used to seeing. Our "industry stands" dont mean anything over there. So to help you figure it out, here is the simplest way to diagnose what your wires are doing what function.
You are so awesome for making this video. I thought I was going to lose all of my patience with this new install. Seriously, thank you very much!
Thank you sir, you have managed to fix a problem that no else had seemed to be able to fix. It was my junction box the whole time, colors where way off. Thanks once again.
Thank you sir. I bought a used trailer that has kinds of wiring problems and this is good info to know. I have a junction box and its gonna be a big help in diagnosing my issues. Thanks again
Thanks for the good info it helped me rewire my trailer before my wife had to take it on a 1200-mile trip one way and then back.
Thank you so much. Clear and concise. This by far is the best video I have watched concerning trailer lights. Thak you!
Very great video got my trailer all wired up your videos are very down to detail keep up the great content
Thanks Dustin, just rewired my entire trailer, probably sleep with one nostril open tonight...
The seven pin wiring kit I bought came with a picture that showed what each color wire controlled. There are two wiring standards and the one you have is standard for RV's and larger trailers with electric brakes. The other standard is SAE and uses different colors that are usually found on four pin flat connectors on boats and smaller utility trailers without brakes. It appears that your trailer is wired for a four pin connector with ground using the SAE color code. Standard 4 pin flat connectors can be connected directly to a seven pin to 4 pin adapter but sometimes the housings don't match up well. Seven pin connectors are standard on trucks with tow packages that often have a built-in trailer brake controller or are prewired for one. My truck came with both type of connectors so I don't need to carry an adapter.
Thanks for your video. I am about to buy a trailer and didn't know how to test the car connection. It's a great help to see how you tested the plug on your car. Cheers from way down south in Australia. 😃😃😃
Glad it was helpful!
I have to redo my 7 pin on my truck because the last one was junk so I just went with a standard 4 pin thanks for the videos!
MANY MANY Thanks Dustin for all you do for us all illiterates in wiring and diagnosing problems also. Thanks again...
Glad to help
Don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video, but it’s mounting! I’m restoring a 1946 Spartan Manor travel trailer. Already installed interior 110v and 12v. Interior lighting. Added a battery, which it never had; new brake disconnect switch; new cord to the truck with the basic box like this. Looks great, but it’s a huge headache trying to get everything working right…at the same time. I want the trailer battery to charge while driving; and perhaps some of the interior lights to work off the battery, in cases when we’re not plugged into shore power. You, or someone, needs to do one of these videos going above a boat trailer application. It would be APPRECIATED!
Thanks for the video buddy. Very good explanation.
Thank you, was trying to hook mine up and wiring was baffling me🤦♂️watched your video and wala 👍
Just what I needed, thank you!!!!
AlwY good tips man thank you easy simple explanation
I got the same issue with my cable thank you for making it easy for me to explain it’s very helpful to me
great video man, nice personality too
I’ve always seen yellow as the reverse trailer lights and black is the battery. Green is taillights/running lights, blue is brakes and brown and red are the turn signals
Lol great video. I’m going to watch it again because I need all the help I can get on wiring. Take care and stay safe.
I appreciate you commenting on every single upload brother. It doesn't go unnoticed. ❤😉
Very knowledgeable. I need help with my 16 ft enclosed trailer lights. The weirdest thing just started and I can't figure it out. I'm sure you could tell me what to do and I need proper lighting on my trailer. I use it everyday for work. Help.
Dustin you did a remarkable job in selecting out the correct clocking of wires. My only question is COULD YOU have not just reclocked the wires in the correct position before starting to hook up trailer wires to the box.??? Looks like that would have been simpler with your expertise. Then who ever should end up later with the trailer and not be lost if a problem occurred in trailer where sys. Thanks.....
It's a molded plug. It's not something that can be altered.
Hey Dustin. I replace my 7 way cable on a 40ft trailer. Now when I put it on reverse my brakes lock up. When i disconnected the black wire it disengage the brakes.
Thanks Dustin.
I watched a couple of your videos and thought I would see if you check your messages. On the way to hunting camp the box trailer brake lights and both turn signals stopped working. This includes the hazard lights. Running lights are fine. Running lights and turn signals run on a single bulb on each side. Where to start. I hooked up to another trailer so I know it isn't the truck. Help please.
Excelente video si funciona
Great video! Thank you. 👍
Thank you too!
On my rv red isn't used. Instead black has 12v for charging trailer battery. Red on my rv has nothing to do with turn signals.
Could I ask where you purchased the tester that you are using?
7 - Way Traditional
7 - Way RV Standard
7 - Way Heavy Duty
I thought this was a great video but not what the title inferred. I need help testing my trailer lights, as in the lights on the trailer and the existing wiring harness. I will also need to
Replace the 4 pin connector on the trailer to a 7 so it will match my suv and this video will help get that straight. Now I still Need to find a video on testing trailer lights/harness.
Just go to the problem light & test the wires. If you get a hot wire to read then it's a ground problem or vise versa
thanks, good info! got a new trailer and something is not wired correctly in the 7 pin.
I fixed it, lol, was out in the dark and had it plugged in wrong!
How much for the voice activated "babe", brake, light operating device? 😂
Seriously... Rather than a light tester, many, many years ago I made me a beeper tester. Cuz the "babe device" isn't always around. I took a 6-18Vdc Buzzer, added longer wires with alligator clips. I clip it on, go turn the signals, brake, lights myself and listen for the beep. It has saved me many hours of frustration when working alone. Every 12v test box should have one. Cheers from Michistan.
Very cool idea bud
Hey Dustin, I have question I replace my truck headlights to LED If it’s on why both turn signal blinking fast. But if not on it is normal. Could you please tell me the problem? Thanks in advance.
It is the reason why your relay has a different rate but I can't really explain it. Maybe the led is less resistance at lower amperage and allows the relay to work faster. 🤔 idk, but It's common. You can probably replace the oem relay with something that will be slower for LED's but I would not know where to start. Maybe a light forum question. Good luck
I don’t get no power on the black wire
Did he mention where he bought the $18 7 pin setup?
Ebay
I was thinking the blue wire from a 7-pin was for reverse lights???
Blue should be electric brakes but Chinese electrical parts like this 7 round pigtail are not held to American standards.
Thanks.
You're welcome
All the wires work except the 12v power in hummer h2
This is confusing when you say it isn't the way the trail plug was configured
I don't get why you wouldn't just rewire the plug itself to match the box? This way all the colors in the box would match up with the correct function.
Because the plug isn't serviceable. It's plastic molded around the wiring during the manufacturing process.
Same here, i got the yellow plug end molded, and wiring diagram does not look correct (the diagram they sent) hence looked for a video to help and this one is perfect, will be mounting today and diagnosing the wire set up. Thanks for the video!
GOOD ME TOO
hahahahahaha
