Nobara now has a Steam Deck build that gives you access to the Steam Deck game mode running in a gamescope session, so one more alternative to HoloISO/ChimeraOS.
@ESGamingCentral Nobara is maintained by GloriousEggroll (Proton GE maintainer) himself. So it comes with Proton GE as well as various kernel and package tweaks optimized for gaming and also has a video codec installer that makes it very easy to install proprietary video codecs needed for compatibility.

Valve definitely needs to release steam deck operating system for everyone. I wouldn't care even if they charged a little for it, it still would be better than Windows.
The first steam machine they produce was for full PC hardware used for PC. I have one way back 2014-2015. The concept was advanced for it's time But they still don't have proton so compatibility was not as good as what we have today. The sale flops. So I think valve stingy about it. But now the platform has matured. Maybe it's time for a 2nd chance. Although the chimeraOS is a good alternative for it.

They could produce their own PC but I would make it a mini PC with the steam deck operating system on it or just sell the operating system like Windows does would probably be best.

Windows collects your data and also now push has an agenda on their customer. When does is also looking at adding forced ads. Not to mention they're talkin about going to a subscription-based for Windows, you will not be allowed to own Windows 12. You will pay a monthly fee to use it, stop paying the fee it no longer works. 😱 Not to mention how horrible of a person Bill Gates is.
The 5600G was my CPU before I could afford a dedicated card. Honestly, the performance out of the IGPU is pretty good. It should be quite usable if a used RX590 is out of the budget. Either way, this build has room to grow, too. An RX6600 would be a nice bump and that's what I ended up doing on mine. Then replaced the 5600G with a 5800X. It's better, yes. But that 5600G is no slouch at all.
I'm running Nobara on my Media box and it's not as close to Steam OS as Chimera OS; Nobara has more of a gaming PC oriented build that supports Nvidia card while Chimera OS does not work at all with Nvidia and Intel GPU.
I think he is wanting the SteamOS game mode experience, which includes the quick access menu functionality that goes beyond Steam Big Picture Mode. There is now a version of Nobara that supports the game mode.
chimeraOS doesnt run with nvidia sadly. Nobara steam deck edition might but I doubt things like gamescope will work until valve officially adds nvidia support to the package
I did this same build about a year ago and have had no problem playing Dishonored 1 and 2, Fallout 4, Destiny 2 and Fortnite all at 2K medium settings. Need to try some new games lol.
So besides just saying it's "Steam OS", what I'm gathering is that we could just install windows on this system with Steam Big picture auto loading on boot, and each game would run about 15-20% better. Pretty awesome for a $300-400 system.
Sadly that's par for the course and that's only if the game is using DirectX for video rendering because its gotta go through a Vulkan wrapper. If the game already supports OpenGL or Vulkan (like Doom Eternal for example) it should be 1:1 or at least close enough that its unnoticeable.

I love watching most of your videos but especially these more budget oriented ones. I put together an rx 6400 build a while back I had watched on your channel. It was for my nieces stepson and she said he loved it. He's been building maps with Roblox on it. On a side note, I just don't know how you've kept your steam controller from looking all scratched on the shiny area. I've had mine for many years but it hardly ever got used stayed put up. I took it out a while back and thought I might give it a try and it looks like I've taken a brillo pad to it lol. Still works great just looks rough.
It would have been nice to see emulation on this Linux build. Emulation is the reason I am subscribed to this channel and I believe the same applies to others.
@@jponz85 Not everything. AMD GPUs have not been able to run (smoothly) emulators that are based on OpenGL. It has only been recently that AMD has released Drivers (Adrenaline) that has improved OpenGL experience. Moreover, updated versions of emulators have better optimization and can run more games at 60 FPS. It would be very interesting to see how the same GPU (RX590) handles emulation a couple of years later. Last but not least, there are new ROMs. Would you not be interested in seeing Zelda Tears of The Kingdom running on a RX590?

A dedicated GPU will always do better. The benefit of an APU is having the GPU and CPU in a single package which is good for small form factor PC's that don't have a lot of space to dedicate GPU like laptops, mini-PCs, or handheld PCs.
I managed a used 5700 xt and got a 2020 alienware aurora r10 with a ryzen 5 5600x added a aio and some other bobs and bits like more ram...alll in about 500 ish but its an amazing system for the pice

Looking for out of the box MAME setup with latest mame, front end HyperSpin or LaunchBox, artwork, videos, all files (cough cough) setup and running with controllers 8bitDo or X-Arcade TankSrick. All in the cheapest and maybe smallest possible. Most important is want to avoid install configure and setup. Want it all and want it running and ready to go out of box.
Maybe but I'm guessing most of the performance difference here comes from the fact that proton/steam run on vulkan instead of directX which most games natively run on so there is a translation layer between them. Sometime vulkan helps with performance especially in older games but other times it also decreases performance.
Again, same comment as on the other vid, if you're gonna use a discrete GPU might as well get the 5600X for similar price, it has higher base & boost clocks & twice the L3 cache since it's not sharing the die with the RX Vega iGPU, has PCIE4 as well versus PCIE3 only.
Except it's not a similar price because he only got the 5600g for $78. It'd be pretty rare to find even the 5600 non X for under $100. Did you not pay attention to the build cost breakdown at all? The motherboard is b450, that's PCIE gen3 anyways. Getting a gen4 b550 board to maximize the PCIE4 capabilities of the 5600x would add another 50$ to the build. So swapping to a 5600x and b550 board would add around 100$ to the build which could go towards a GPU like the 5700xt instead, which would have a greater effect on performance overall. Realistically, the only cpu option available while maintaining the 300$ budget would be the 3600. But while it does have double the L3 cache of the 5600g, it still falls behind in raw performance to the 5600g. So basically, he lucked out on a cheap 5600g which made the whole build possible for 300$.

So again, for around 80$ that would make this 300$ build happen, the ryzen 3600 is the only real option and ETA Prime simply lucked out on the 5600g. The 5600x simply isn't an option for the price constraint. Let me simplify it for you: get the best CPU you can for the budget you set. For him it happened to be the ryzen 5600g at 80$. So what if it comes with an igpu he won't be using? It's still the best performing CPU that was available for him.

I think you need a controller to get to the menu, for me I did pressed my ps button + X and it brings up the triple dot menu for the steam os where you can navigate to showing the temps and more
For example it use gnome which is really bad choice for gaming. Tearing doesn't work on gnome = increased input lag and micro stuttering. On kde it will work really better (if you are sensitive for such things)
My one rather big nit about chimera os is that unlike Artix Linux, and a few others, Chimera and most of the linux world only come with systemd as an init system. Some of us who know think that systemd is problematic because of it's hijacking of the linux ecosystem is well under way and is anathema to the foss. It takes away peoples ability to chose. Many people believe, and correctly so, that an init system should do just that and nothing more.
I don't agree with that cuz you don't get a warranty and there's a lot more work involved so my time is worth money. Say I get paid 50 bucks an hour. How many hours did it take you to do this? I'd rather just order a steam deck

Exactly, if he waited for the sale price for the 5600G then he could have done the same for a 5600 or 5600X or even a 5500. It's silly to buy a Ryzen G together with a discrete GPU. You buy a G because you don't need or can't afford a discrete GPU at this time.

Yes they do, but the technology isn't ready, so they haven't, yet.

These specs just happen to be really close to my PC. 5700G, RX 580, 16GB@2400.
very balanced build and dont forget the help of FSR Balanced which can improve performance even more. rx 590 is still too good to be true wow
At 1080p with FSR1? Nah at worst Quality mode, but I wouldn't use it below Ultra Quality. At 1080p with FSR2? Maybe, but I would stick to Quality.

I read the small print before downloading this Distro. Does not support Nvidia or Intel graphic cards. That's a big shame as far as I am concerned.
