Would you use this? If so why? If not, why not? Let me know! :)
Sounds good on paper, but is probably a pain to use. Iâll stick to manual focus for now on my Cinema camera, or just use my Sony cameras.
That looks pretty interesting. But I have a feeling in 6months they will come with a newer and better version... Like absolutely any other new camera device these days lol Great video mate!
Yes if I bought into the Panasonic S line.
I like to use it. But unfortunately everywhere this is sold out
Thoughts on price?
Professional 1st AC here (cinema camera tech and focus puller). the LIDAR system is an incredible piece of tech but please, learn how to pull your own focus before jumping into a system like this. When you rely on too much tech to do your job for you, you end up not being able to do your job when things stop working properly.
Itâs sounds like it just made your Panasonic cameras 10x better! đ
You know đđđ»đ„
Yes!! I have a Lumic G9 which is difficult to get the right focus even when Im using a focus knob. This is Golden
Panasonic needs autofocus, canon needs stabilization ie. without wobble. Sony i guess has both
@@NickPixelTV yeah but their ergonomics, buttons, menus and color science is still not quite up to par.
If only Panasonic would do that for themselves.
As a DJI 4D owner, I'm glad they're now selling the LiDAR separately for other cameras, even if it's bundled with a gimbal. And I can attest, first-hand experience, the DJI LiDAR module IS a game changer.
The thing that makes it revolutionary is that it turns on vintage and manual lenses and makes them usable for solo photographers and videographers. Millions of vintage lenses collecting dust and growing mold become useful again. Filmmaking gets lots more affordable and useful.
I just hope DJI doesn't have this locked up with patents, and we can get this without attaching to DJI's ecosystem.
Yes, some of those vintage manual lenses are great and cheap. This breathes new life into them.
Really? Seriously? Focusing manually is not hard at all.
â@@kevinmoorejr.9418 Yes, for a static shot it's great. Shooting with blocking where the subject and camera movement is premeditated is easy too. Please imagine shooting handheld with docu/non-talent subjects (like animals) while also framing the shot and get back to me.
@@The_CGA Especially when you have to shoot solo as a run and gun with no second chances. It would be nearly impossible.
@@kevinmoorejr.9418 It's not hard at all if you're shooting a scene you can reharse. But if you're moving around, have no second chances and you're doing solo work, good-performing autofocus gives you invaluable peace of mind and allows you to concentrate on situational awareness.
DJI did join the L-mount alliance. Would love to see this in new lumix cameras.
dream camera with this tech built-in in
I've been doing film/videography professionally for about four years now. About six months ago, I finally decided to get a few manual-focus-only lenses and try to learn the art of manually focusing. It was, and still is, revelatory. It's the most fun I have ever had in this business. I don't see myself going back. I use a DJI RS2 with the DJI follow focus motor when I shoot on a gimbal, and it's honestly not nearly as difficult as I expected. It takes a couple weeks to get the hang of it, but once you really "get it," it really does become second nature. I haven't shot with an autofocus lens since June of this year.
I have now purchased a number of manual lenses, many of them vintage, and it just opens up an amazing new world of cinematography. Everyone should give it an honest try.
Rigging and tough contact motor-lens is a pain. Unless there is ready to go solution and itâs, I believe, is pricey.
I work on dance/music video so MANUAL focus is 80% a BIG NO to me.
I think its great to have MF as my second choice than making it become my primary.
Bet it depends on what you do, the focal length you shoot with and the F stop u used too.
It is a worthwhile skill. Once you can manually focus well, auto is almost always untrustworthy.
Do you ever film solo in a situation where you don't have control? If I'd shoot a documentary solo I think I'd have to think about too many things at the same time to do manual focus, but when I can direct and things are more predictable, I could see mastering manual focus being very valuable.
What is it about vintage lenses that makes them look better? I haven't used them and I haven't seen anything that convinced me I couldn't just do it in grading, haha.
@@joas162 yeah, I shoot mostly alone and always direct and pull my own focus⊠itâs something that after a whole you donât even think about . đ
Iâm a 1st AC/focus puller working in Los Angeles- things are about to get interesting
I love using the LiDAR system but if DJI comes out with the handle grip to use with it...game over! đŻđŻđŻ
This is getting so close to the Holy Grail for focus with single-camera operators. Once that DJI hand grip comes out a and once they get a few other issues you mentioned sorted, this will be amazing. Even with a focus puller, push-ins and other tracking shots are a nightmare, and this sort of thing will make a huge difference. Just a having a device that gives you reliable and flexible autofocus on any lens will be a boon.
Does any body have any idea when we could see this hand grip come in?
@Sam Holland concerning focus to infinity on lidar: in my opinion, this could be easily handled by software update - just add a infinity focus point in the calibration process and if subject reaches end of lidar distance go to infinity. It would be another very very useful upgrade to an already capable system! hoping @DJI is listening :)
That footage with the anamorphic lens you shot Looks so incredibly good! I'm a little bit jealous.
I absolutely love all the new tech we are getting in this space. Can't wait to see where it goes from here. I think the rack focusing between two subjects may be the coolest feature to me.
I really hope we see LiDAR being embraced in more cameras in the future. I also hope we see this "add-on" tech being more widely accepted and built up more robustly. A difficulty long term with focus pulling systems and the more affordable cine-lenses is that the focus rotor apparatus squeezes the lens and the mount of the lens bends/breaks over time (sometimes it takes years).
I do honestly believe that for low-light and close-throw distances, we'll likely see LiDAR appear on future cameras. It makes sense to do a combination of phase-detect + LiDAR in hybrid approaches similar to how we currently do dual-pixel, phase-detect, and contrast-detect in cameras all working together to cover all the trade-offs and conditions to get the best focus balance.
Having LiDAR affordably thrown into the ring is a big win, and it's great to see innovation pushing forward. Also as this matures, I can see this being used more and more in professional cinema scenarios to allow cinematography to focus more on other higher level topics when they don't have to worry as much about sharp focus in shot. The automation for this switching focus smoothly is also going to be a big win in repeat-ability of shots between takes in big-cinema.
What impressed me the most is that this is still a first gen product, and I'm sure DJI is already working it's magic to make the MK2 even easier to use.
Agreed, i'm not convinced by this first gen but almost. Id love to be able to use it without the gimbal. And also in an ideal world ot would have an assisted manual mode. Where you do the focus manually and the lidar assists you to get the focus perfectly
@@marcello1995 with anything I'd just avoid first gen products, this is DJI just showing what they can do and I'm sure the next gen will make this one look like a toy. Imagine comparing the original Mavic Pro to the current Mavic 3, that kind of leap.
@@makatron 100%! Looking forward to see whats next! Greetings
This tech looks promising. From what Iâve seen the gimbal auto framing still needs some work but as a standalone focus upgrade itâs incredible. Giving an amazing autofocus to older lumix cameras and manual lenses is so valuable.
Just so I get this right, if you are starting from scratch, (not counting the camera or lenses), its like $650 for the lidar, focus motor is around $150, another $280 for the gimbal, then your going to need some kind of rail for the motor to mount to so another $100(ish). So just shy of $1200? Even starting from scratch that really isn't a bad price for everything you can do. There is real value in this. If you are a solo filmmaker this is awesome! đ
you need the RS3 Pro for that and it is quite more than $280 : $800
Itâs crazy how the technology keeps improving and growing!!!
I know this video is about the lidar af system but dang. That anamorphic lense looks amazing.
Dji is advancing technology for all.
Autofocus camera technology out of China should be top notch. They use similar technology to monitor their people. Seriously it should be really good. As long as it doesnât have tracking tech embedded in itâŠ. Iâm in!
âŠonly in China, right?
Besides we never use tracking data, right?!?
@@Getoffmycloud53 : Your not wrong, but your understanding of the level of tracking/observation that China uses seems to be miscalculated or misunderstood.
Really hoping that handle comes out soon
I reckon the next version will be the one to get, unless they make firmware updates to the current model.
I agree. I researched this a wee while ago and wasnât convinced the tech is quite ready.
Something my R5 struggles with constantly is when I'm backlighting a subject and using an ND mist filter. LiDAR shouldn't have the same issue as it's not affected by the light in the same way... can't wait to see where this tech goes next
DJI really cracked it! Thanks for sharing. Great news for everyone.
Ha! Iâve been contemplating getting one since it came out. I finally decided to order this morning and now youâve put this video up! đ
Woo! Thatâs exciting! đ€©đđ»đ„
That looks a great advance, but to the eyes of the mere mortal, these are questions that we thaught to have been solved a decade ago. I like the passion you talk about it and that's what kept me till the end of the video. Peace up and keep the focus "pun intended".
This might become actually useable in a couple years. Stoked for that
I used to use the previous model and this model is better on ever level, it is perfect for simple stuff like interviews when I'm the only doing the work.
Why do you think it's not usable now?
Why isnât it usable now???
I use it weekly no problems.
@@A1Bokeh I meant for bigger productions. For solo interviews or other static stuff it's pretty useful but in situations I could use the AF the most, it's not reliable enough yet
As a panasonic shooter this is pretty freaking dope
What a cool concept. Hopefully the future is all of the above⊠LiDAR, PDAF, CDAF all doing their job between frames and the software makes it seamless.
Game changer for sure! I need this for my blackmagic
Fantastic no focus puller or diy pulling and excellent for non auto focus cameras
Wonderful analysis demo
Thank you
Dark performance is amazing!
5:19 such great news !!!!!!!! I hope they add more then 3 lense strings too :)
Hmmm, I can my trusty GH5 & GH5 II cameras benefiting from a unit like this. Well done to you & DJI đđ»
Hi Sam
Excellent video! Can you please make another video showing RS3 Pro and Ninja V setup?
Subscribed because of this video. I will totally buy this when I can use it without a gimbal.
Frankly, this is the most excited I've been to utilize new tech in some time.
Its the best thing for loner shooters and it certainly helps in certain situations when you need autofocus and to save money. Its always about saving money isnt it : D.
Sometimes you need manual because you want to time the focus movement and not let the machine decide how, even though the machine can have how fast or slow you want to rack, but, in your hands, you decide. So just like manual exposure, manual focus is great for filming and likewise, autofocus is ideal for certain situations like sports, vlogging, handheld jerky as fuck shoot or when you're a fkg loner. Well, honestly, i am a fkg loner so ill need it, but only for certain things so its a good thing to have
Bro - great video and review! Making me want to bust out my lidar unit more now.
đ thanks Chris! Bust out your unit! đȘđ»đ„đ
LIDAR is such an advance over conventional auto-focus, it should be in all professional quality cameras. In fact, both systems could be in the same camera, since only LIDAR adds more hardware. At any event, the Dji LIDAR unit will really be useful in cameras that do not support auto-focus, like the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema cameras. I use a Canon C200 that supports auto-focus lenses already.
It needs to be independent from the gimbal. Iâd love to see a monitor controller, with the âfocus waveformâ feature from the Ronin 4D as a universal system for bolting to any camera
Just wait...
Will never happen just like how Pioneer will never release a 4 channel standalone controller that you can mix 4 channels without a computer. Market segmentation is a bitch.
Amazing! Awesome! Thank you, guys!đ
This is BRILLIANT! Had no idea it even existed. Thanks for sharing!
Focus on the vision
I have the predecessor of this gimbal with the previous lidar AF - it works perfectly.
Only challenge is that when subjects get out of the lidar range (10-12m) the system automatically focuses at infinity, assuming that this is and the mechanical end of the focus throw of the lens (that was mechanically detected during the lens calibration). Unfortunately, nowadays most lenses can throw the barrel slightly beyond optical infinity for whatever so stupid reasons such as âheadroom for temperature driven or mount tolerances (I believe they just want to save money during final quality control). Fur use with the lidar AF this means that you will end up with blurry backgrounds at infinity.
Only ways to solve this is either limit the barrel throw mechanically at optical infinity during calibration (e.g. with the hard stops of a manual follow focus) or to calibrate the lensâ infinity with shimming rings. I did the latter with my Sirui 50mm and getting unbelievable results.
Having your lens shimmed correctly to meet end of barrel throw with optical infinity is also ver helpful when focusing manually - if you want infinity, throw the barrel to the end, and you nail it.
Having an autonomous system (i.e. w/o) the gimbal would be a game changer for us amateurs who canât afford those 50 grands AF systems.
The forthcoming 'top handle' option could be exactly what I need for my work. Nice.
I canât wait
I canât wait
Great for actually getting the shot for my Helios 40 and Trioplan
Great technology
This will be adopted on camera body in the future
Helpful content thanks for this man! Didn't know DJI made this! Now im interested
this is actually game changing
Yes I would, I use Nikon
just ordered mine to use with my atlas anamorphic and the alexa mini, im pretty dang excited to think of an autofocus alexa
Great video, VERY tempted! Is there a huge difference between this LiDAR module and the 3D Focus module for the RS2? The standalone utility they have promised for this is very exciting
This is awesome. I use a Canon 90D and to shoot in slo mo at 100fps you loose auto focus. With the LIDR, problem solved!!!
I think this is my first time in your channel. AWESOME video!
Looking forward to see the anamorphic lens review
Have a Productive and Helathy day!
Thank you Freddy. You have a great day too đđ»đ„đ€©
Would love to see it on Leica SL2s camera.
Sam, this may be a silly question but we are trying to use the monitor with handgrips to remotely pull focus and other commands but it shows the image but I can't get it to take control of focus and other commands on the RS3 Pro. The focus dial on the front of the RS3 is the one that operates the focus wheel. It is not in broadcast mode so I know that is not the problem.
Where I see this all coming together in the next decade is dual pixel and LiDAR together controlled either manually or by AI.
THOUGHTS??
Lidar tech has been in surveying for years... they use it on aerial flights over survey areas and get surprisingly good accuracy when used correctly. If we're talking about the same thing then I would think this type of tracking would be a piece of cake for lidar.
also perfect for anyone shooting DFD AF systems
Where did you get that flannel? It's sick.
Propably gonna wait for a Version 2.0 or 3.0
Only really interesting for me when pairable with a wireless follow focus for more accurate Focus Pulling.
New to the channel, but love the content so far!
Though, could I possibly challenge you to "take a few steps back" ? Most of your gear is on the higher end, but the majority of filmmakers aren't going to have money for all of this out the gate.
Could you do a video with essential tips using beginner gear? Like a EOS 550-750/60-80D or equivalent aged camera, kit lens(Or something like a nifty fifty) basic mic/sound, basic lighting and how to optimize beginner gear for filmmaking.
I'd be very curious to see how you, with your knowledge and skill level, would perform with.. Well, the equipment that I have.
Challenge accepted. Great idea đ€©đđ»đ„
@@SamHollandThat's awesome! I can't even begin to explain my current level of hype!
Can this work on Panasonic full frame and m43 cameras, what all would one needs are kits available?
Is it possible to use the DJI Lidar at the same time as the Panasonic DMW-XLR2 XLR Microphone Adapter?
As a rule of thumb, when working solo, the least amount of bolt-on gear the better because thereâs just less to go wrong. While this is great technology, the simplicity and reliability of the Canon system would still be the right choice in most applications with a solo operator. For me its real advantage in productions where thereâs luxury of time and crew etc to do the inevitable extra gear wrangling.
Hello,
Thanks for your video, is it possible to know the reference of your HDMI cable between the camera and the Ninja?
Thanks
geni.us/1YKRC if these are out of stock, I get these⊠geni.us/XNjY7K
Thank you đđ»
yes it will be nice they have a 7inch to tap to focus for lidar
Super exciting tech from DJI, thanks for sharing! I also have the new Surui 35mm and looking forward to trying it out. đđŒ canât wait to see your review on the 50mm.
đ€©đđ»đ„
hear any rumors of the Handle Grip for Lidar? Would be great if it had a display for tracking select.
That is insane. Subbed
Amazing! DJI is really one of the most innovative companies in video production tech these days! :)
Did you see the lidar is going to focus some Lumix lenses w no external motor soon?đThank You
Here it is - czcams.com/video/jZm9cVyXE5E/video.htmlsi=KfPwmj4-WZXA8goT
This actually looks awesome! I love it.
Thank you so much, Iâm very curious about this technology with the Black Magic, 6K pocket cinema, which, in my opinion takes some of the richest footage.
LiDAR is for 3D VFX Artists. It allows a Diffusion Map and to create Digital 3D Twins. Turns everything in a 3D Model
I went to canon to get my R6 and R5 updated firmware and ever since then, the focus would be on the eye but it keeps hunting bad. I'll click on the person's face and it won't focus. Maybe this can help me.
I wish I had your editing skills
I hope they let us use the DJI LIDAR on the DJI RS 3 gimbal in the future and not just the Pro version.
If they can make something like this without needing a gimbal I will 100% buy it. The IBIS in my S5 and shooting style are more than enough
Iâm about to start a petition for them to make a stand alone system đđđ
Iâll sign đ
Can't wait for it to be available without a gimbal. Will it work with AF lenses on cameras that lack autofocus capabilities? I'm afraid the focus-by-wire systems might be incompatible.
That low light tracking was very impressive!
Can you use this on different gimbals (like none dji gimbals) or on a tripod
This is a game changer. Great review Sam
đđ»đ„đ€©
PLEASE Could you help me with a few questions?
Regarding the DJI high bright monitor, can it handle external RAW recording, similar to the Atomos Ninja V with Sony cameras?
If I plan on purchasing an additional DJI motor, how many motors can the right 4D handgrip control effectively?
the LiDAR, autofocus tool specifically designed for cine lenses! what is its range ? can it handle autofocus to infinity distance
Does the left handgrip exclusively control gimbal movement, and does it require the DJI Ronin RavenEye for full functionality?
Thanks so much for taking the time!
concise, dense and informative
Thank you, John! đđ»đ„
Interesting device! I wonder if these camera companies are considering putting in lidar and atomos-v in the high-end camera
That's what I wanted to see!!! I wanted to get their RS3 pro combo which i think comes with that. Im just waiting for black friday.
This may solve the whole Canon third party lens issue with the R-Series as well. If I were sigma or another TPM I would be creating a joint advertising campaign to feature their lenses and the DJI autofocus together.
Sam! Your view count! đ
This is BRILLIANT !
You should be able to track anything with it not just face. I am pretty sure I have done it. I think you need to switch the mode from wide to single point and then just like on rs2 point at the object and click the locking button.
I currently have this same system and was debating returning it. Iâm worried DJI will just come out with another LiDAR module instead of firmware updating this one
Bmpcc6k + subject = power
That's seriously awesome.
We need the handle asap!
definitely not a replacement for in-camera (in your case Canon) focus. Way too bulky, not fast enough. I can see where it would be useful in slowmoving "cinematic" shots. But, if you're doing run and gun, fast paced , i.e. kitchen, restaurant, bar service shots, I don't see it working. Great video!
