Lyrics:
Well, the lampshade's on fire when the lights go out
The room lit up and we ran about
Well, this is what I really call a party now
Packed up our cars, move to the next town

Sometimes an artist just stands the fuck out. I'm a huge metalhead, and that makes up the majority of the music I listen to. Sometimes, just sometimes, an artist grabs my hand and takes me on a ride. So glad I found this band.
i'm mostly a metal head, too, but good shit is good shit.
+WhoaitsZ that makes three of us, so far.
Fuck yea!
I'm glad you did too. Epic comment by the way, put a huge smile on my face xD
Both my boyfriend and I are huge metalheads- We like bands like Gojira, Mastodon, Deafheaven, Isis, Baroness, Ghost (okay, they are debatable metal, but still great), Redfang. He gets into more brutal stuff too, but these bands form the base of what we listen to.
Yet we really like Indie music too. It might be because half those bands are basically indie metal, but... who knows.
To all those hearing Modest Mouse for the 1st time, Welcome to life.
Fuck!! Yes!!
But you'll have to listen to, building nothing out of something, the moon and Antarctica, the lonesome crowded west, this is a long drive, before you become a band wagon fan
Isaiah Towers I'm told they actually sound better if you start at the end of their discography and work your way back. I discovered them in '97 though, so I guess I'll never know :(
Eh there older stuff was better, but I still like there new stuff
👍
I am seriously addicted to this song, it's so bouncy! The melodies, bass, and vocal rhythm just work so well together.
Same. I love the lyrics.
Saw these guys, live, in Redding, CA., and, they did this, "Float on", "Dashboard", "Ocean Breathes Salty", and, a few other favorites. Amazing set, great energy! Great band!
This video merges the familiar and the unsettling in such a masterful way. The song itself is awesome, but the video kicks ass all on it's own.
Filmed in Athens GA directed and edited by Jorge Torres-Torres. He also made the video for Ground Walks with Time in a Box.
I think Adult Swim produced or did this music video for them. Either way, it's a good one IMO
Nah truly one of the worst music videos of all time great song though
Modest Mouse is one of the few bands who manage to continue making solid music over time, instead of getting less and less as good and selling out like many other bands.
+Care Bear Zach while they aren't selling out, I definitely think Strangers To Ourselves was a bit of a disappointment. A couple songs are good but most of it is pretty skippable tbh.
And plus Eric Judy left, and his base playing was incredible.
+Andrew Miller I'm going to have to disagree. Their style has changed substantially from say This is a long drive to their present day work. I sort of like what they put out these days, but IMO nothing will top their beginnings.
+Care Bear Zach This latest albums was still probably their weakest. It has some good tracks but a lot of forgettable ones.
Pistol is probably the worst song Isaac Brock has ever written.
+Care Bear Zach I love MM I really do but I feel this one is a bit weak. where its still in a OK level its no where near We were Dead Before The ship even sank. heck its no where near The Moon and Antarctica
Riven311 The Moon and Antarctica is a masterpiece, and We Were Dead was a fun album done correctly. Strangers tried to fall somewhere in the middle but missed.
RIP Jeremiah, gone but not forgotten
"This one's done so where to now??" Damn, profound lyric.
"Shave off my eyebrows when I fall to the ground so I cant look surprised right now" --The silencing of self expression. This song, among others by Modest Mouse, is deafening. This music video is perfect.
Having emotion isn't what is cool. Just kill it with meds, pot and booze and party so we don't have to face our fate.
Had an ex girlfriend who was the personification of this song. You're exactly right mossy1
This song is so addictive! I think the meaning is about how the human race just ruins things then finds a replacement and how we go place to place leaving a path of destruction behind us. Destroy one place move to another.
A whisper heard round the room. . . "What are you getting for Christmas?"
Most physically self destructive celebration.
Not a fire, just a nudge and reminder we are "the change."
A whisper heard round the room. . . "What are you getting for Christmas?"

Not a fire, just a nudge and reminder we are "the change."
Like when the liberals got mad about that pipeline so they went there and just left thousands of pounds of trash everywhere becuz they are hypocrites?
i thought of it as describing a type of person. one that just burns thru life only seeking pleasure and leaving behind destruction ("packed up our cars moved to the next town" "this ones done so where to now?") or if not a type of person then a person struggling to change. ik the singer used to have drug problems and this feels like it describes that kind of state. tho i think both interpretations are true at the same time (enlightened centrist i know) i see some of their other songs the same way, as being about humanity as a whole (often in an enviornmental way or just talking about human nature) but through that also about certain types of people.
like Coyotes is a good example, its obviously about how we mistreat coyotes and nature as a whole, but also about how we treat those we love. "and we say were in love with all of it" is about how despite us saying we love all of nature we hate, neglect, and fear the unattractive parts of it. were afraid of the sharks and treat coyotes like pests, theres a stark difference between how we treat them and how we treat wolves. And its also about how we claim to love all of a person but we hate and neglect the parts of them we dont like. in both interpretations its about claiming to love something but only loving the idea of it you have in your head, often to the detriment of the thing youre claiming to love.
Listening to this like... 5~8 times per day... never gets old and puts a smile on my face every single time.
Didn't expect to see Natasha Lyonne in a Modest Mouse video but hey, I'm a fan of all of the above.
YES! I knew it was her! (:
Ramsey Hunt I don't think anyone expected to see Natasha Lyonne anywhere lately.
Christopher Johnson uhhh, she's on a Netflix show going into it's 3rd season - Orange is the New Black =)
Ramsey Hunt I love her so much. gaaah! this made my night
Ramsey Hunt I knew she was Natasha Lyonne! :D
History of the human race in 3 minutes.
Best song by Modest Mouse
Very underrated song and band
Modest Mouse is one of the most original bands I’ve ever heard
You know when you look back to your favourite bands and songs and you remember having good time listening to those but are tired of listening to them? Well, I have been a fan of Modest Mouse for over 10 years now and still can't get enough of them! There is something really catchy about Isaac's voice and the band itself like no other!
I was introduced to them opening up for REM in 2007. Sometimes I just open Modest Mouse and listen to all their albums straight through on long drives. They're unbelievably good
To me, this is their most meaningful song yet. And the genius of the way they did it is mind blowing, a song about destroying ourselves and this planet with remorse, while also making you want to dance your ass off. I absolutely love it.
how does only have 1 million it should be all over the radio and shit man
+RadFab It is.
+RadFab Its true art man, the kids don't listen to the good stuff. Not till its too late.
you're right... this is shit, man.
+RadFab It's already on the radio man :D
+Nahomi Velarde Really? That's amazing! :P
This band has more music than almost every group I know of. And Every Single Song is its own unique, original experience. All of their songs from every album have so much emotion and thought put into them. Thank you, Modest Mouse, for sticking around all these years and making our days a little better, as numbered as they are.
The line "well you all know what I'm talkin about" kills me because of the amount of people in the comments who completely missed the point of this song..
Noooooo!! RIP Jeremiah Green!!!! Your Drumming is legendary
Lamps can give off light for a long time, or you can set the lampshade on fire and have a blazing strong light but only for a short while. This will also char the lightbulb making it useless, and is not the most efficient use of the lamp.
Yea, it's mostly about destroying our planet, not giving a damn. It's a paralel with teenagers having parties, being irresponsible and shit. But it's really about the human kind as a whole.
I would go farther and say it people as a whole who destroy themselves mentally and physically all the while causing damage to the people around them. While they search for happiness, all the hurt and pain that is caused by the actions they take, are never given any forethought. All the while passing down the same trauma to future generations rather than fixing the problems within themselves.
This Song kind of shits on the “yolo idgaf” mentality. Like sure, you can burn it up and chop it down, or you can live happily for a while.
This Song kind of shits on the “yolo idgaf” mentality. Like sure, you can burn it up and chop it down, or you can live happily for a while.
LOOOOOOOOOL
Isaac is all about the environment. If he does an interview that's pretty much all he talks about. Which sucks kinda cause you really want to hear about the music. These guys saved my life more than once. Greatest band of ALL TIME
Isaac doesn't want to give away the meaning because that destroys our interpretations; it is still pretty evident that many of his songs are about humanity's self-destructive nature. I mean, LCW was a rant about parking lots and lampshades on fire was about climate change and resource overuse.
The little girl at the beginning is playing with a woman, perhaps her mother. They are painting each other's faces and the mother dabs a bit of dark paint on the girls right cheek. Cut to Natasha Lyonne, the adult version of that little girl, with the same streak of dark paint now on her left cheek, though shot upside down so it looks like it's on the same side from the viewer's perspective, flashing back to her days of hard partying, now alone and friendless long after the drugs, sex and booze have run out. Great casting choice in Lyonne considering her real life struggle with addiction and her subsequent recovery and comeback.
Or it's just a bunch of trippy images. Either way, cool video.
Non Orientable ya I agree that’s what this is about rather than the other idiots suggesting it’s about the consequences of being mean to planet earth lol
@@matts5247 Why idiots? It's right there in the song (space, planets, depending on scientists to find another "door", etc). Even if you disagree(d), there's no need to assert that they're objectively incorrect or incompetent.
(Yes, this is an old comment that I'm bumping; however, I think it's positive to be reminded of past mindsets to see how/if you've grown.)
She's my favorite person I've never met!
@@matts5247 literally what the song is about is earth. The video tells a different, though parallel story.
This is why modest mouse is my favorite band still to this day
this is one of those songs that give me goosebumps every time
this dude just referenced travis scott's song one year before it came out
@@satanael_el this is a Travis Scott lyric?
@@zzzs yeah, "gives me goosebumps every time" is one of the phrases hes most recognized for, lookup travis scott goosebumps
@@satanael_el Gives me goosebumps is a phrase that's been around for ages lol
I found this on the radio... Thanks God!!!
It's amazing the kinds of messages you can find in some modest mouse songs if you listen close enough to the lyrics.
Domo Kun existential rock, brother.
@Machines of God chill bro lol
Best song ever
I loved every second of it. God damn this makes me happy. Plus that like bar is looking pretty solid.
Hey man most of your MM videos are on my playlists! Thx for uploading!
bar doesnt matter
Sorry for being happy that at the time, there were no dislikes. I guess that makes me shallow or something. Oh well
Guercinator A KOALA!
Guercinator
Hey the like bar is still lookin pretty solid! Even if there are some dislikes.
Been listening to these guys for 12 years
This song is by far my favorite from Modest Mouse.
the new purge movie looks good
Best band of the fucking universe.
R.I.P Jeremiah
Drugs: yes
Sex: yes
Violence: yes
Weird shit: yes
Talent: yes
couldnt agree more
loooollll
they make a lot of shit like this anymore
XD
you know lampshade really have a lot of energy, the opposite attraction from mostly positive lightbulbs makes them have quite an amount of positivity. the green blues have been catching my eyes and ive seen tachyons from most lightbulbs and shades and whatnot, what a life.
sounds like light & lights resonate strongly with you
The legacy of humanity will be a huge self-consuming Ouroboros.
There's so many details missed in this video I can relate
I think modest mouse is way underrated, they’ve helped me through my dark days in high school 13 plus years ago, the music they produce is unique and so hard to get out of your head like a bad ear worm
My favorite modest mouse song by far. And I like a lot of their songs
modest mouse is love. modest mouse is life.
best lyrics of any artist, ever.
after 20 years of loving your music maybe less maybe more idk the last few years have been crazy......... You guys are still a voice of reason. Im probably mentally disturbed but thank you for being you as a group being cohesive and amazing all these years,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,SEEING YOU GUYS IN RED ROCKS was cool
Modest Mouse+Natasha Lyonne=Perfection!
I love Modest Mouse but hadn't heard very much of their new-ish stuff past around 2012 or so. Heard this yesterday for the first time and my first thought was "welp, this is my new favorite song"
I've loved Modest Mouse since "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" released 13 years ago, and have loved everything they've done since then. I even love the albums released. before they hit it big. They are definitely one of my favorite bands, and in my opinion one of the more under appreciated out there today.
This is the song for 2020
Where's everyone at 5 years later. Wishing you have all found your places :)
Wishing I could do anything in this video right now
One of a kind band.
been listening since 2007 and theyll hold a place in my heart and my life then any other band ive listened to. id give my life to talk to isaac for an hour
OMG ! Love it love it love it!!!!
Right on man I love this song
One of my fav.songs
This is my favorite song from Modest mouse, it passes the vibe check and just a great and amazing song 🤟
I miss this song I miss this time in my life. I miss the old me
The new album is 100% Modest Mouse, I had high expectations and they delivered! It was a long 8 years waiting for it.
If I could only listen to one Band for the rest of my life..... It would be 'Mouse. NO question.
Nah, if we're talking waiting for 8 years, then they weren't delivered at all. But it's still really good. Except Pistol, fuck that song, should have been a bonus track or something.
Pittsburgh Syndrome I agree about Pistol... Hope the guys don't wait too long for the next album though!
Jonathan Yokley Don't worry, they have another album almost finished; expect it within the year.
Pittsburgh Syndrome Eveybody hates pistol - the song's going to bloody trend. a cult classic. It's so bad that it is good.
Pittsburgh Syndrome
i don't agree. Love Pistol! and exactly this track is what defines Modest Mouse :) in a "Exceptions confirm the rule" kind of sense :)
This how we threw down in the '90's. No cell phones to distract you, just pagers!
We're all goin', we're all goin'
Well, the lampshade's on fire when the lights go out
The room lit up and we ran about
Well, this is what I really call a party now
Packed up our cars, moved to the next town
Well, the lampshades's on fire when the lights go out
This is what I really call a party now
Well, fear makes us really, really run around
This one's done so where to now?
Our eyes light up, we have no shame at all
Well you all know what I'm talking' about
Shaved off my eyebrows when I fall to the ground
So I can't look surprised right now
Pack up again, head to the next place
Where we'll make the same mistakes
Burn it up, or just chop it down
Ah, this one's done so where to now?
Buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh-duh-dah
Duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh-duh-dah
We're all goin', we're all goin'
Well, the lampshade's on fire when the lights go out
This is what I really call a party now
Well, fear makes us really, really run around
Ah, this one's done so where to now?
Our eyes light up, we have no shame at all
Well, you all know what I'm talkin' about
The room lights up, well, we're still dancing around
We're havin' fun, havin' some for now
Pack up again, head to the next place
Where we'll make the same mistakes
Open one up and let it fall to the ground
Pile out the door when it all runs out
Buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh, buh-duh-dah
Duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh-duh-dah
We're all goin', we're all goin'
We have spines in our bones
We'll eat your food, we'll throw stones
Oh, this is how it's always gone
And this is how it's goin' to go
Well, we're the human race
We're goin' to party out of this place
And then move on
Tough love
We'll kill you off and then make a clone
Yeah, we got spines, yeah, we have bones
This is how it's always gone
And this is how it's goin' to go
As our feelings are getting hurt
Ah, we want you to do the work
Our ass looks great inside these jeans
Well, we all just don't wanna' clean
Oh, this is how it's always been
And this is how it's goin' to be
So, you just move on
The air's on fire so we're movin' on
Better find another one 'cause this one's done
Waitin' for the magic when the scientists glow
To push, push, push, push, pull us up
Spend some time to float in outer space
Find another planet, make the same mistakes
Our mind's all shattered when we climb aboard
Hopin' for the scientists to find another door
Nice 😎
innate nest Wow. Lyrics about After, after hours. “This is my last big horrah”! Spoken in the words of someone who’s doing cocaine and ecstasy and whatever else you can get your hot hands on all night long. You’ve had to be there, if you were then you understand these lyrics!!
thank you love the lyrics and the people who take the time to post them!
Okay I never actually thought about the lyrics but now I see they're sadly the truth...
I knew this song had some type of dark tone, but damn! Actually getting to see all the lyrics, it's cool that they cover topics like this, but scary because it's so true!
Their most emotional song imo
have you heard The World At Large? That one's way more emotional than this
Edit the sad parts?
Yes, big edit, big sad
This song and Renegades by Feeder are the staples of my life. And the rest of their music too, I love modest mouse, daily listening in 2021, anyone else? 🤟🤟🤟
oh thank god, finally another modest mouse album
Just bought my ticket to see them at hard Rock at Universal. I've been trying for so long to see them and I finally now get to. Can't explain how excited I am! Even if I'm going solo lmao
I'm seeing them next Saturday in Milwaukee!! Been a fan since I was 14, am 29 now, first time seeing them! Also going solo lol
There it is.
And the one thing you taught me
'bout human beings was this
They ain't made of nothin' but water and shit
Minerals
this has a huge Chill Peppers vibe going on. I like it
I'm not artsy enough to understand what was going on, but I loved every second of it.
I don't think anyone is artsy enough to know what is going on.
***** I'm just not high enough to understand what's going on...god damn probation.

Read this-the video and the lyrics go hand in hand.
I loved it too. Drugs, booze, masks, body paint, scary costumes, intoxicated people playing with guns, some band, lots of fire, hippies getting freaky, skateboard, sex, tossed beverages, and a cat. That's what I got out of it. Also, some deeper shit about humans destroying the planet and not giving a fuck about it.
Humanity, in all its beauty and excess

Lampshades on Fire by Modest Mouse
Source genius.com/Modest-mouse-lampshades-on-fire-lyrics
I think this is one of the coolest songs EVER.
It has been 10 years since I first heard a Modest Mouse album, and this song just might be my new favorite.
Thanks fellas, you're doing the lord's work
Happy *1-Year* Anniversary to Lampshades On Fire!
This bops

Damn fine return for Modest Mouse.
One of the only not-so-well-known artists that I really wish other people to find out, cause this band is just amazing. From the depressng This is a long drive, the incredibly well written Moon and Antartica, Building nothing out of something, to their happier/less-depressing Good news, and everything in between... Man, i wish I'd found them earlier
4.5 million views for this song is modest
Can't stop watching this video 👍😊✌
I saw them live in Brampton, Ontario, Canada in like 2005, and it was such an amazing concert.
anytime i hear modest mouse it takes me back to highschool. im listening to this right now completely forgetting im a marine stationed in Japan. thank you modest mouse
Shut up, boot!
Modest Mouse are so beautiful.
I have been a fan of Modest Mouse from the very beginning, and by gods this new album is just another top-notch heart pulling rhythmic brain bustlin'-bustin' multi-layered album. Each album is unique in its own vendetta for itself (or others), so I can see why some newcomers will feel intimidated about going into the past - while also realizing how much emotion they missed. I encourage all to have an open ear, heart, and soul to this album. It may sometimes be just repetitive mumbo-jumbo catchy stuff that the radio plays (and do not appreciate the song's inner meaning), but Modest Mouse took 8 years to release an album for a reason.
I'm so happy Modest Mouse is back!! I've been waiting what seems like forever for my favorite band.
SONG OF THE DECADE. 2010-2019
So glad to hear new Modest Mouse.
Just found out about this band minutes ago and I'm in love💖💖
Minutes? You've been missing out. Check out We were dead before the ship even sank, and good news for people who enjoy good news.
jraifsnider Just check out their entire discography. Maybe not Sad Sappy Sucker.
Puri Dewayani I've been listening to these guys since I found them in 2001 - Lonesome Crowded West was the album that did it for me!
Check out Trailer Trash & Cowboy Dan
Listen to Trailer Trash and Cowboy Dan. In fact listen to everything modest mouse has done so far. You'd find at least 120 good tunes.
atonedsparrow Totally agree!!!
So great!!
"Find another planet make the same mistakes"
I love this album
I see a new image every time I watch this
Natasha Lyonne ! I'm a big fan ,she still got it as far as I can tell.
Lets get this to 4million!
Been listening to these guys since like 98 or 99. Its been a long intense ride and this song basically sums it all up.
God. This is epic, scary, disturbing, and fucking beautiful. Great job, MM.
That was one of the best music videos I've ever seen.
