Legal Eagle ORV in Monument Valley Utah
This blog is about flying adventures in a Milholland Legal Eagle XL named ORV, or off road vehicle forbthe long version. It is a Part 103 Ultralight Vehicle by FAA standards. That means less than 254 pounds, max of 5 gallons of fuel, max speed 63 mph with stall under 27 mph. Powers is a 1/2 VW of 45 hp.
The Legal Eagle is so named because it is capable of being built in legal compliance with the United States FAR 103 Ultralight Vehicles regulations, even when equipped with a four stroke engine.
The Legal Eagle features an open cockpit and is powered by a 30 hp (22 kW) Half VW engine.
The design features a fuselage of welded 4130 steel tubing, mated to an all-wood wing made from spruce. The struts and tail surfaces are made from 6061 T6 aluminium tubing. The flying surfaces are covered with doped aircraft fabric. The rear fuselage is normally left as an open truss structure to save weight and to ensure that the aircraft does not exceed the FAR 103 maximum speed of 55 knots (102 km/h; 63 mph). Like the fuselage, the taildragger landing gear is sprung steel.
The aircraft has been developed into several variants of the basic design including the XL version for larger pilots and a two-seat ultralight trainer and Light-sport aircraft.[6][7][8]

I fell in love with this little plane at Osh '18 so I thought a bit , then decided to build my own LEXL.......... Build has started !, my shop now looks like an airplane factory .... Maybe someday I can fly the pattern at Fun Fly Zone myself...... Thanks Dan for the nice video, FLY safe Les , would love to make the Legal Eagle flock gathering some time, I'd bring the Crispy Creams.

I don't think anyone has more hrs in a Eagle than Les Homan. Always has great videos!

Les & Dan, that was the most clear and concise interview and explanations on ANY AIRCRAFT that has been covered on this channel. Bravo to you both ! Les, thanks for your very complete coverage of all the questions asked, and Dan, great job here! So Les, I'll be watching your videos [which are some of the best on CZcams], and hope to come over and visit someday at Oakdale. All the Best to you both, Ron at L00.

It was great meeting Les (and Leonard Millholland, the planes designer) at Oshkosh this year. Great workmanship and a really nice engine.

I like the way he explains it’s flight characteristics! He speaks my lingo ✊🇺🇸 o ya Verner engines are my selection also. Check the Scarlet 9 cylinder.... hmmm add a turbo and it’s a wrap!

On a light sport that'd be awesome but I don't know if you'd ever fit a turbo into the weight of an ultralight. The budget is pretty tight as is. 254 lbs doesn't leave a lot of room for extras.

It seemed Dan didn't know about BetterHalfVW. I'm surprised.

I wonder how this engine would be on a Fisher Koala? Would it make it too heavy for Part 103? What if you added a custom aluminum cowling around the engine, like the cowling on a Curtiss Goshawk?

Shouldn't we not have things loose and flopping around on the instrument panel?

Any ultralight airplane that I can build or buy quick_build_kit for 5k or less?
