Some aquarium hobbyists will pay $10,000 or more for a single shrimp because of the rarity of their colors or patterns.

Oof-
Tooooohhhh bad
For those of you wondering, the people that usually buy those multi-thousand dollar animals in the pet trade for different color morphs, are other breeders. They might buy 1 for 10k, but sell 500 of them after doing the breeding themselves and sell the same morph for $500 each. A lot of the times a breeder wants to be one of the first to put something on the market because the longer they are out there the cheaper they get.
Yes, you're right

In my brain: hey look it a shiny Pokémon.
As someone from an adjacent hobby, planted aquarium design, and remembering the shrimp hobby when there were basically only cherry shrimp and bee shrimp a decade ago, it's insane how things have gotten for shrimp that still suck balls at cleaning your aquarium compared to wild Amano Shrimp. I won 2nd place in the world for the IAPLC (world championship for planted aquarium designers)-- the prize money $3000. If I came 1 place higher, the Grand Prize winner of aquascape design, my prize would be $10,000-- same as the price tag for this shrimp. lol
So basically a Koi fish version of shrimp.
Let's call it Toi Shrimp
Shroi?
At least Koi can live for many decades... It will be worth the money. These shrimps however...
Koi shrimp?
Waranont Wiwaha the solution to that is to buy enough shrimp for them to breed in your tank, thereby keeping the population from eventually fading

Fr I'm a beginner aquarist starting to get into shrimp breeding after 5 months (I just bought 8 lower-grade red cherries and am waiting for one to berry, though i wanted some blue dreams but my LFS wasn't carrying them), and was really surprised to see a youtuber unrelated to aquariums talk about it
Nice touch with the toilet paper being rare and expensive.
That made me laugh so hard!

Dwarf shrimp are awesome, I have dozens of those. Mostly clear coloured though, so hard to breed blue
2:26 - I feel personally attacked.
That said, the very stark difference here is the expectation for those to increase, or at least hold, their value... unless you're continuing to breed the shrimp... not so much?
Hi, Minute Earth I have an idea for your next video. Can you do a video on how chemical bonds and structures (bonds, double bonds, + and - bonds, benzenes, pentagon structures, etc.) work and what they do? I’ve been wanting to learn about chemistry and molecules for a while. I you can thx.

Why have a rare shrimp when you can buy a Mantis Shrimp? They're like the Mike Tyson of crustaceans
Just A Dio Who's A Hero For Fun lol
Probably because it's very difficult to keep mantis shrimp in enclosure. In restaurants in asia they keep them in plastic bottles as their sonic blasting claws always break the tank they are kept in.
Saltwater tanks are scary for some reason
For $10,000 you could buy 250,00 shrimp from me please buy my shrimp lmao.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned that I think is important is that in breeding any sort of premium showcase animal is preventing inbreeding.

2:20 turn on subtitles and don't blink.
People pay up for rarity because the other option is to do the labor to create or acquire the product yourself
i 'm glad to see Bubba & Gump landed on their feet :-)
You forgot to divide by 12 in your Netflix calculation. It's 800 months, not 800 years.
Step one, buy thousand of shrimp.
Step two invade the pet shop with your army of shrimp
Also there was one meatball that has the size of almost my hand, and it had chicken meat inside, it costed the same 10,000 thing
In my language there is a saying: "as long as there are sheep, we will not run out of wool", meaning as long as there are people who will spend their money unwisely, there will be someone who will take advantage and profit on that.
Short lived alright. Of all the shrimp I’ve had, they all passed away literally after a month of owning them at most! I had 8 last year I believe. Really cool too.
If they're dying after a month it may be related to your water parameters, disease, or something else rather than old age.
0:47 oh no she's here
just because things are rare does not mean it will cost more
it is in fact the opposite
people buy things - things become rareer - and to still make profit prices go up
so things get expensive because people want to buy them
For $10K you could get TEN THOUSAND cookies.
Wow this really blows my mind! 10,000 dollars would literally be enough money to change not just my life, but my whole family's life as well. I could get my license, a car, and start college to earn a degree.
10,000 dollars would get me and my child out of poverty for the rest of our lives. It makes me feel sad like my life is worth less than a colorful crustacean.
Me: only sees 2 puns also me: THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG I CAN FELL IT
Cherry shrimp are the way to go
Awesome video, all animal lives are worth 10,000 dollars. Animals are the best!!!
First of all, I'm no expert in art, or shirmp reproduction, but I felt like I need to get something out of the way. Here is how I fell:
Scientist explaining why some worthless thing is ridiculously expensive = Some people are very rich, and they have a lot of money. Somethings are very rare/hard to come by, so they cost a lot. And some people like special things, because the things ares expensive and having expensive things (like a Ferrari) can be seen has a symbol of status. And some few are just dumb and heuristicly assume that if it's expensive it must be good.
Me after the scientist = Well that is very sound, really makes sense
Artist explaining why people bother in playing millions of dollars for a white canvas or a banana taped into the wall or some other bullshit = Well, it reflects the nature of the human existence by making us ask hard question that allows to better express ourselves.
Me: No, wait, those are just meaningless words!
Now, speaking seriously, people say science is counterintuitive, but I think it's really sound, and to me, I never really understood art.
sounds like dutch tulip mania all over again

The shrimp you have are Neo Caridina. The expensive ones shown are Caridina.
Yup! Neocaridina are easier to keep and breed in larger numbers, which brings the prices down.
MinuteEarth my shrimp bois are also Neo Caridina though I prefer Caridina like CRS because of their larger size and distinct patterns.
Also I love the growth of your flame moss and it looks like the female cherry shrimp you showed is pregnant!
2:28 "Gum chewed by John Green"
Who TF is John Green?? xDDDD
Yes, I know who is and also his brother with whom he Hanks out xD
John Green is [insert random definition here].
The people buying are probably other breeders who think they can make it back in the long run. The price might also be an intentional barrier to new competition from other breeders.
My red cherry shrimp is constantly breeding for like 2 years and 1 day... they all just dissapear, no shedding shells or whatsoever trace of them in tank... and no i only keep docile fishes in tank
If the price of that white painted shrimp is $8, I still choose that blue 🔵 bolt shrimp, and yes, I'm one of shrimps keeping hobbyist and not new, since 2009
