At about :51 in this trailer (Tom Drake's screen credit), one can see what is probably the only remaining shot from the sequence set at the fairgrounds (after "The Trolley Song," and which originally concluded the summer portion of the film), in which Judy sang "Boys and Girls Like You and Me," the Rodgers and Hammerstein song salvaged from "Oklahoma!", and purchased expressly for inclusion in MMISTL by producer Arthur Freed. ("Oklahoma!", which opened in 1943, was currently the biggest hit on Broadway, so the acquisition of an unused R&H song from the show was quite a coup.) The scene is lit very low, as it takes place at dusk. One of the World's Fair pavilions is visible behind Mr. Drake, and he is of course costumed as he was in the preceding scene on the trolley. The scene was shot and fully realized, but was removed from the film I think fairly late in production (i.e., after previews), as it was felt to slow down the action. The footage for the scene was among the casualties of the disastrous 1967 fire in MGM's vault no. 7 in Culver City.

And notice "The trolley song" scene is another take, not the original take included in the film.

Last weekend, I visited the site of the 1904 fair and couldn't help but sing (quietly and while away from other people, of course) "Meet Me in St. Louis" the whole time I was there. 😂
Fun fact: 3 of the main character's actors were alive during the 1904 World's Fair. Two of them were born two years before: Chill Willis (Mr. Neely) and Leon Ames (Mr. Smith). The third, Harry Davenport (Grandpa), was 38. Mary Astor (Mrs. Smith) was born two years later in 1906. I found this to be really quite interesting, myself.

Her real name was Francess Gumm .. Judy Garland was " salt of the Earth " ..She grew up in the Upper Midwest on the Iron Range in Northern MN. Her daughter Liza Minnelli sounds very much like her mom ! This is a special film that recollects the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis .

I believe that this is more or less the original release trailer, with just the opening and closing titles changed for re-release, which probably took place some time in the early 1950's. MMISTL was a huge hit and top grosser in its initial release, so it was likely on a regular reissue schedule, as were many of the hit films of the era.

This is a great great film and I love nearly everything about it. I just fear that young people today (I'm 38, for context) will never watch movies of this age again, and if they do, they simply won't get/understand them. Is the world they depict just unrecognisable now?

in my opinion, as a 17 year old interested in cinema from all decades since the 20s, i think that these old films serve as time machines. of course we don't understand or know much about the eras, but what's so cool about watching movies made in those eras is that we get a chance to learn and see the past. what people were like and how they talked and acted and the state of the world at the time. that's one of my favorite things about cinema and one of the reasons it's such a powerful and sustaining art form.

I’m 36 and I love old movies like this. Notice how everything is beautiful in the film? The houses, the dresses, even the trolly is just a beautiful thing. We used to embrace beauty in our lives and I think we’ve abandoned that. And it’s sad.
