Avoid a Ratchet Strap Disaster - There is a BETTER way

- Every time we trailer a machine using ratchet straps, we are worrying about the straps loosening when the suspension articulates as we cruise down the road. After looking into a few different options, Dave pulled the trigger on the Erickson Chock Tie-down kit. This video shows you the key differences between strapping a machine down with ratchet straps and using a chock and tie-down system.

I know a few guys that had the straps come off. Look up Vulcan straps. The wheel bonnet type

That's a fantastic way to strap down a rig! Our roads are unpaved and very rough, so this is great! I've never lost a rig, but I've had a strap come off a time or two. Will have to look in to this! Great video, my friend!

Great job! I’ll bet you remember seeing them on our trailer. They are super solid, but do be careful to make certain that the spring loaded ends are secure. I have twice ruined a strap when it came off and was dragging. They were all cranked down tight and seemed completely set, but somehow still came off. The RZR was still very secure with 3 wheels strapped. Longer straps are pretty cheap at Harbor Freight, so I am always going to carry a spare strap with us. 👍😎

I’ve been using these for the past year and they are great! Quick & easy to use and I highlight recommend. You do need to buy hardware to go with it and I use mine with 30’s and that is about the max of the straps that come with it but new longer straps can be easily found and cheap enough to still make these a great buy.

Great idea I just wish they would make a heavy duty kit - this one is only good for up to 1500 lbs, my KRX is 2000 lbs empty, probably 2100 lbs with gear. Also, I probably will go with 35" tires eventually so I guess E-Trax with retractable 2" straps over the tires for now.

Not saying this option is not a viable option because it looks like it is...I just bought a new trailer and Turbo XP S, and then ordered up a set of quality UTV tie downs from MAC's....those work awesome and looks like I run them tighter then you did yours...been strapping down cars the same way for years and never had a tie down come loose.
Sounds like a great option, the ones in the vid have miles on them now and Dave hasn’t had any issues with them so far. 👍
The issue I see with this and the other way you strapped down is your anchoring to WOOD with SCREWS??? I weld or bolt all my anchor points to metal. The side X sides weigh a lot and I don’t trust screws. I’d like this system if I bolted them to metal some how? I tie around the front frame and the frame of the trailer with a 3” ratchet strap.
My 2cents
I know some guys go through the wood and trailer frame with nuts and bolts. Since the hardware provided by the manufacturer is heavy screws, I assume they've done some substantial testing. That said, bolts through frame would definitely be more secure!
I would be worried about side slipping of the ride that migh allow the straps to slip off the tires. Maybe it's just me, but I'd include four ratchet straps to keep the ride from sliding sideways on wide trailers. My trailer is only 4" wider than my ride, so side slip wouldn't be an issue. I'd also use through bolts and a thick washer plate underneath with locknuts. Other than that, that is a good anchoring system.
It’s never been an issue in the three years I’ve been using these. We trailer over some rough dirt roads as well. 100% confidence in the system.
Self tappers holding them down? If so I’d swap for a bolt an good washers. But I’m gonna order them. Check out shock straps

I prefer strapping down my Rhino low on the frame in an X pattern front and rear pulling fore and aft with ratchet straps that are several times the weight rating needed. Have never had a strap loosen. Wondering if you've ever thought that tying down to the tires may cause excess stress to the suspension and wheel bearings with the weight of the body of the toy pitching around unrestrained with the wheels locked in place?
No I’ve never thought that there would be any extra stress on the suspension and wheel bearings. If there is I think it would be negligible in comparison to the abuse these machines take on the trail. After tying down like this over the last couple years I’ll never go back to the other way of doing it.

Yeah it's still a good buy and cheaper than other brands out there... Just wishing they were still $31 LOL!!

Odd that they only strap across the top of tires.
I thought so too at first. I've towed a lot of miles with them now and I've never had an issue yet. Once you ratchet the straps down there's no chance of the strap slipping off.

to bad for on 30 inch tires!
I honestly think there would be no issue using these with a 32" tire. There's 6-8" of strap left over with my 28" tires.

Yeah, price has gone up since I made that video almost a year ago. It's still a good buy.
