You know you're a nerd when you have read them all. No 19 and No 1 are my favorite karate books ever!

Very important ideal. Twenty Guiding Principles of Karate (Honorable Mention) and Perfection of Character (#6) are great books and cover the Dojo Kun and Niju Kun.

@@theshotokanchronicles Osu!🥋I have yet to read them all. I have experience in different martial arts systems, over the years, mainly Chinese Boxing (I hate the word kung fu as it's an American bastardization of the real name of Chinese martial arts, It's Chinese Boxing or Ch'ung-K'uo-Ch'uan- Chinese Boxing or Shao-lin T'ze Ch'uan- Shao-lin temple Boxing) but I digress, I took up Shotokan Karate for the first time a year ago at a not for profit school here, (they DO NOT just give away rank, it's earned)I am still a white belt but I am content, the philosophy coincides with the training (Did some Tang Soo Do also, so already has H1 and H2) but I have learned so many ways to break down H1 and H2 , different ways to to Heian Shodan, AMAZING, I am in no rush to be promoted in rank as there's so much to absorb, as a bonus during class kata practice, I am allowed to follow along with the black belts when Hangetsu is practiced. My only question to myself was "Why didn't I take up Shotokan Karate ( Funakoshi Shihan simply called it Kara Te , his students adopted the name Shoto (pine waves) Kan (house or hall) in his honor as Shoto was his pen name) earlier??? OSU! Karate, a simple name yet so much involved 🥋⛩

The authorized English translation of Karate-do Kyohan was translated by Ohshima Tsutomu, founder of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), per request from the Funakoshi family. Ohshima Shihan is also the model photographed in illustrations of every movement of the 19 Shotokan kata that accompany their translated descriptions.

Thank you Micheal for beating me to the punch here! Oshima's Kyohan is the Bible for Shotokan Kata, and they knew what they were doing when they had Mr Oshima as the model for these forms, as they knew he did it best and was the best man at the time of publication to demonstrate these moves. But this guy denigrates Kyohan as not changing over the years and not being as hip and new as everyone else's works? Im guessing he's never been to a special training or seen Mr Oshima in person working his magic, but its just his interpretation. If I were to assemble any books on the topic, it would start and end with the Kyohan!

@@gkauto1959 As Ohshima Sensei's junior, what I see online regarding karate and martial arts edifies why Sensei always emphasized that transmission of the Way must be done person to person, not via books or video. Observing practice from the outside or learning with the intellect from books can only point in the general direction of real practice, at best. True understanding comes only from direct experience of the whole mind and body. The value of opinions typed on a keyboard is accordingly limited.

I never even considered it. Not interested in supporting him. In June 2012 he was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple sexual offences over a period of 26 years including indecent assault, sexual assault, and making indecent and possessing pornographic images of children.

He is a stain on U.K. karate. His being sent down, affected people on so many levels, the victims obviously as well as the businesses/lives of those affiliated with him who’s lives he also ruined!

I compare him to David myatt who’s a U.K. based expert on Korean martial arts however I’d never give myatt’s stuff the time of day because he’s a co founder of combat 18 and other neo nazi groups.
