- LASH SERUMS EXPLAINED
I get a lot of questions about lash serums and I want to explain the two major categories of lash serums and which ones I'd personally try!
Dr. Sarah Blackwelder, optometrist reviews what to look for in a lash serum - which ingredients to avoid and which do I recommend.
She answers these questions and lists her top 4 favorite natural lash serums (and why). #lashes #lashserums #eyelashes #eyelash #eyelashserum #lashserum
Lash Serums I would personally try
1. Vegamour GRO Lash Serum vegamour.com/p...

I’d love to see non-prostaglandin lash serum reviews. Thanks for the details on the ingredients!
Sadly prostaglandin is the ingredient that makes them grow the most! Any lash serum that doesn’t contain won’t make you lashes grow as much! I’ve tried most of them.
@@Angelesmichelleewhat's your favorite so far?
Thanks for the info, I've been using the ordinary for about 8 wks & both eyebrows and lashes are the best they've ever been! I use am & pm, no irritation. Bonus it dosent cost a fortune either... cold pressed castor oil is great too.
Thanks for this comment! I just found out about the ordinary peptide one and was thinking about trying it. Have you still be using it and has it been growing? Thanks in advance!
@@thesacredbombshell Hi, yes im still using it, my lashes almost doubled in length, slightly thicker & are healthier, so I'm really happy & with mascara on top looks even better... my almost nothing brows have grown but not thick but it now looks like I have brows where before it didn't. Id definatly recommend, I've just started 2nd tube so it lasts a good while too. So because it's not as expensive as others, id say give it a try... hope that helps 😊
@@ScarLetta13 That was very helpful🎉Thank you so much for taking the time to respond💃🏽I'm going to give it try! Seems worth a try for such a good price point and good results!
@@thesacredbombshell you're very welcome & glad I could help. I definatly think it's worth it. What I do is apply it, leave 5 mins before doing makeup or adding creams. Have a fab weekend 💃
Do you think once desired results are obtained, could reduce it to once a day bidaily? Or will that make results go away?
I am in my 50’s and received a sample of Grande lash and cannot believe my eyelashes. One of my eyes has always had a little less than the other but now both sets of eyelashes are so long. I am also trying their brow serum now.
It works amazing but gave me sunken eyes after a while. I'm 56....:(
@@lf9341 Did they go back to normal after you stop using it? For how long have you used it?
@@lf9341that’s called aging.
Yes. I’m very interested in seeing how the lash serums work on you. I just started researching about lash serums because I was going to purchase grande lash serum and my coworker actually used to work for them and told me her eyelashes fell out after 2 years of using that.
This is so interesting! Thank you for this, you’re very easy to understand. I just got the ordinary one and haven’t noticed a difference yet but it hasn’t irritated my eyes or anything
The Ordinary one is on my list to try as well! Working on a comparison video now!
So helpful, Doctor. Look forward to watching your channel. You cut through the noise very effectively. 👍
I always feel like companies put health ends up on the backburner when beauty is the goal :(! I'm glad I came across the side effects before impulse buying hahaha
Hi! thanks so much for the info!
Olaplex has introduced a new lash serum. It has both the "Pro" and Peptide ingredients. Im just curious if you could provide some directive as to which category the Olaplex lash serum falls into?
Ingredients list:
Water (Aqua/Eau), Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-83 Amide, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Biotin, Panthenol, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, Pantethine, Aminomethyl Propanol, Sorbic Acid, Rhizobian Gum, Benzoic Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Dextran, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Potassium Sorbate
It’s the second category. The peptide one
Thank you so much for this important information ! I would love to see a follow up video of you trying out the lash serums. I’m a lash tech && sometimes the girlies get anxiety and they start to pull/mess with the extensions. So some of my girls have to take a break. I would love to recommend them the right eyelash serums to get them back right 🫶🏽
Wait until the craze is over. All these insecure girlies will have permanent eyelash fallout.
This is the most helpful video I’ve seen on this topic. Thanks!😊
Exactly
Yes to a test! Thanks!!
What about lash lifts? I would also love to see the comparison of the peptide based lash serums. Thank you 🥰
Working on a comparison video now! Lash lifts can have some side effects from the chemicals used as well as the glue used in the pads placed on the eyelids. Usually just irritation and possible allergic reactions on the skin. Rarely, but it can happen, chemical burn to the eye if it's open during application. I recommend finding a great experienced lash tech 😊
I had a lash lift and it damaged my lashes after about a month . They looked great at first and later they started breaking . It’s a perm basically. I won’t do it again.
@@vibeoptometryI just subscribed 😊
Yes, I would love to know the difference!
Is Scorolash good to use?
Yes to the testing eyelash serums
I use Dabalash since 2 years and it's awesome!! I totally recommended
The is really helpful! Thank you!!
So glad you found it helpful! 😊
As an optometrist do you personally offer the IPL eye therapy I have dry eye disease and am looking into this I am so tired of having tears flowing down my face all day and all of the other symtoms that occurr Thank You
Thank you for this information!
Did you ever end up making the peptide serum comparison video? 💕
Hi doctor. can you do an updated video of what you think about the non Prost. Serums. I wanted to buy the vegan lash serum as I am vegan but wanted to know if the peptides ones worked
HI Doctor: Sure hope you get this post: Revitalash has a sensitive version to their best selling original eyelash serum. It contains one the "prost" analogues you mention...it is way down on the ingredient panel as opposed to the original version which has it about half way down of the ingredients that total about a dozen...the "prost" ingredient is about #7. The sensitive version has about double the ingredient panel and the "prost" ingredient is 2/3 down the list. The sensitive version also has the peptide 17 you mentioned so this sensitive version is a mix of good/bad...so to speak. Your thoughts on the positioning of the "prost" and with all the other ingredients listed with the sensitive version. Would you still stay away from it? Seems like it may take longer for the sensitive version to work but then again may be more acceptable to many who fear the nasties closer to the top of the ingredient panel? Again........your thoughts most welcome on this topic. Thanks so much! :)
Hi! I had a chance to look at Revitalash products and their ingredients. You are correct in that the sensitive version does still contain Ethylcloprostenolamide - that's the active lash growing ingredient and it is a prostaglandin analog. It likely will still produce some of the same side effects of redness, skin discoloration, and iris discoloration. It's possible it is in less of a concentration compared to the best selling original serum, but it's hard to say because there are so many other added ingredients. Personally, I prefer the peptide only serums. I just don't think the side effects of prostaglandin analogs are worth it. Hope this helped!
@@vibeoptometry thank you so much for being a eye doctor with busy time that you actually responded i would have asked the same question and so glad you answered her .
What about AlphaLash? I noticed a lot of dermatologists office sell it.
Can you recommend other serums? You said not to use the prostaglandin ones and I hear the peptide 17, which ones are good that don’t use that ingredient?
I used primelash and wow did it work and fast. I did get red eyelids from it it looked like I had red shadow on. so I switched to the Ordinary.
Does “the ordinary” work as well as prime lash? I want to get the safe versions but don’t want to waste money on something that may not even work
As a doctor I assume you’re aware, but in the US ingredients have to be listed in order of concentration in the ingredient list. So I’m confused why you would say companies are being sneaky about where they place their ingredients on the list. Unless you’re trying to suggest they’re being dishonest about how much of the formula is made up of these ingredients, there’s nothing sneaky about including it toward the end of the list. Active ingredients frequently make up a pretty small portion of any cosmetic formula, either because not much of them are needed to have an effect or because additional ingredients (like water and conditioning agents) are required to make the product spreadable and/or even just safe to use. The only time I would say a company is being sneaky when they have an active ingredient far down the list is when they’re advertising that ingredient as a selling point of the product and you can tell from the position on the ingredient list that there’s not enough in it to have much effect. Since the Prost based serums do work (at least in my experience!), I would presume that a pretty low concentration of the Prost ingredient is needed and since it has the potential for irritation, toward the bottom of the ingredient list is exactly where it should be since higher concentrations would likely increase the risk of side effects.
Also, I find it weird that you seem to talk about potential side effects as if they’re likely to happen to most people who use them. The FDA studies for Latisse showed the iris discoloration and skin irritation happening to a pretty small number of participants. This is pretty in line with my own experience using these products. I’ve used both Latisse and several of the over the counter alternatives (revitalash, grande lash, etc.) and never experienced any side effects at all despite using them off and on for over a decade now. And I’ve got pale skin and blue eyes so discoloration and redness would be hard for me to miss!
Nearly all medications we take, from antibiotics to allergy meds to antidepressants, have the potential for scary side effects if you read the fine print. But we take them anyway because the chances that they’ll do what we want them to do with little to no side effects is generally much higher than the chance of them doing harm. I don’t see lash serums as any different. It’s good to make people aware of what could happen so they they know what to look for if something goes wrong so they know to stop using it, but the side effect list shouldn’t be spoken of as if those things are inevitable when they’re not.
Prost ingredients at any concentration have the potential to be irritating and damaging to the ocular surface. Putting it lower on the list does reflect it’s concentration within the ingredient list as a whole, but “sneaky” in the sense they aren’t overtly advertising these serums as being prostaglandin based, which IMO is misleading unless you know their chemical name. Google every ingredient and research them all yourself? That’s a lot of extra work to be a truly informed consumer so seems pretty sneaky to me.

I got like red under eye from grande lash but I heard all those scary things that's I'm too scarred to keep going... because I mean when you don't sleep well and are like late on the phone what ever your eyes get watery but how I know if it's save for me to use ??? I been using it for like too years now first revita lash and brow now grande lash and brow when i felt discomfort I would just use it like every 2 days and felt normal 😅
It doesn’t affect blue eyes so you wouldn’t see a change in eye color
Hi, thank you for sharing. Is the brand Dabalash safe to use ?
It is not safe, it has Prost
Hi, would you recommend M2 Beauté
Eyelash Activating Serum based on the ingredients? I’ve been using it for years and it works wonders for me. I have tried not using it and my lash seem to grow a lot shorter than I remember they were prior to start using the serum.. not sure what to do, if I should change serum or what. Could you provide any advice? Thanks!!
The Vegamour lash serum caused me to develop blepharitis and horrible MGD. It's been 6 months and I have gone to so many doctors and tried all the OTC drops, warm compresses, omega3's +hyaluronic acid supplements, lid scrubs, prescription drops...it's still not going away and I don't know what to do anymore .Any thoughts? I wish I never bought this product and I can't afford to keep paying for all these remedies.
Are u okay now?
Please could you test the lash serums
Do the peptide type serums work as well as the prostaglandin types?
not really, they're kind of like conditioner for your lashes, they nourish them and prevent breakage to try and help them grow more, but there's no active ingredient that's physically making your lashes grow more. but they're safer so I guess it depends on your priorities :)
Is it true that eyelash serums darken the iris?🤨
Would you say that the redness on skin around the eyes is permanent as well? This is one of the side effects I'm experiencing with using GrandeLash, and I was wondering if I stopped using it, if my skin will naturally revive itself back to my skin colour after some time.
Hi, I experienced this side effect as well when using a lash serum. I experienced it on the skin next to the outer corner of my eyes. After discontinuing the lash serum, my skin returned to its’ natural state. I was using another lash serum however. Hope this helps! :)
i also really struggled with redness around my eyes and irritation badly and i’ve stopped using grande lash and it went away
Hello, do you know in which category the lash serum by Plume falls into?
Which ones are peptide?
Does anyone know if the glow for it lash growth serum is okay ? Thank u :)
Hi ! Can I use a peptide based lash serum if i’m under 18 ? (i saw on the internet that lash serums are for 18+)
You’re too young to be using it. You haven’t even finished growing yet! Slow down and enjoy being a child. You don’t need any peptides until you’re nearing 30. Who cares what Tik Toxik says to use.
Can these serums be used safely on the bottom lashes?
is lash therapy Australia a safe lash serum to use that doesn’t have prostaglandin analog? does anyone else know any eyelash serums that are safe to use and do grow lashes?
yes lash therapy Australia is safe, it has a big pink circle on the website that says prostaglandin free :)
Thanks for the video! I am going to stop using mine. Is sweed lashes eyelash growth safe? They've stated that they do not use prostaglandins
If you were to be using one of the lash serums that cause some of those negative side affects, would they be reversible or go away after a while of using x serum?
After a few months of using grande lash my eyes look darker and more sunken in. I;m 56 though. Too bad, looked awesome.
I just started to research eyelash serums and ran into your video… I want to know how the results turned out? Noticed this was 7months ago so there’s got to be a video somewhere, right?😅
The thing is the castor oil doesn't work. Neither does biotin etc.
i disagree, i’ve been using castor oil for my lashes and they’re definitely thicker but the results may not be as dramatic as a lash serum
Castor oil only really made my lashes healthier and thicker but it doesnt grow your lashes
What about sins lash serum
Can you recommend an eyebrow growth serum?
I use SCOROLASH and SCOROBROW!!
@@kelly.nicole Have you had any effects🫣
No thanks not with those side effects
